The Tigers’ last available scholarship for the 2019-20 season apparently will go to 7-foot Axel Okongo, who announced his commitment to Missouri on Monday.

Okongo will come to Columbia via Northwest College in Powell, Wyoming, where he averaged 2.5 points and 1.5 rebounds per game last season. He is a native of Saâcy-sur-Marne in France.

In a media briefing last week, Tigers head coach Cuonzo Martin indicated he wasn’t planning to fill the 13th and final scholarship spot on the roster, saying he expected to be using a nine-man rotation next season. The addition of Okongo, then, comes as something of a surprise.

Missouri’s current 2019-20 roster doesn’t list a true center. Junior Jeremiah Tilmon and senior Reed Nikko, both 6-10, are listed as forwards.

Okong’s Northwest College team went 10-21 last season in National Junior College Athletic Association Region 9 play.
