County's justice system is failing area residents
Our justice system is in bad shape. How is it that Sig Jensen — a devout and respected educator — can be publicly dragged through the mud on the basis of one accusation? Sig was proven innocent of all charges, yet he'll have to live with the smear on his name, and the debt accrued in defending himself, for a long time. Why did this happen? The county prosecutor's office and the police failed to do their jobs.

Roads more important than recreation center
A recreation center? For who? So another tax paid for by a lot of people who will not use it. If you people would locate this thing in Sagle so everyone could benefit I might vote yes, but I will definitely vote no for something that is set up to benefit the Sandpoint area. It's the same as the school levies, the Sandpoint voters carry the weight and the rest of us get stuck with the results. The county roads are in terrible shape due to mismanagement, and poor road maintenance, and a rec center is more important?

World's traditions give meaning to holidays
In Sandpoint, we celebrate this season as we do everything - eclectically and whole-heartedly. Some of us ski through the holidays on the slopes of Schweitzer, while some prefer the quiet warmth of home, sipping eggnog by the fire. Our streets glow with tiny white lights and Christmas trees shine through windows like beacons on a cold winter's night.

Cleaning water bed keeps sleep sweet
In this week's article, I thought I would discuss water bed care. On conventional mattresses, body oil and skin cells that is shed from the body soaks into the fibers of the mattress. On water beds, they build up on the surface of the vinyl material. If these surfaces are not cleaned properly decay will start, and with decay, a smell will penetrate the bedding and after a while will become unbearable by one sleeping in the bed.

Take responsibility for own spiritual experience
"Merry Christmas" or "happy holidays?" Do we really lack such ability to determine the course of our own personal lives that we can't find anything better to do at Christmas time than to worry about what everyone else is up to?
'Tis the season for kindness
There are many holidays in December and the term "merry Christmas" can be used generically as a pleasant greeting among people, sort of like, "Hi, how ya' doin'?" or it can be a meaningful greeting between two people who both celebrate Christmas and truly wish each other well. Since communication is interpreted by both the speaker and the listener, I believe the term "merry Christmas" should be used if the speaker knows that the person they are talking to does celebrate Christmas. However, not everyone does, and in a public setting, such as a department store, I feel "happy holidays" is more appropriate. Is it worth the fuss to make everyone conform? Hmmm … good question.

Spend time Saturday and celebrate human rights
Something extraordinary makes Saturday, Dec. 10, a day to mark and remember. In 1948, following the end of World War II, all member nations of the United Nations created and signed the" Universal Declaration of Human Rights" and set aside Dec. 10 as the day to commemorate this milestone. Out of the trauma of war, these leaders realized the importance of committing themselves and their governments to the protection and promotion of human rights.
