Multi-story buildings don't belong in city
This letter is in response to the article regarding tall, multi-story buildings here in Sandpoint. If anybody wants them, I suggest them move to New York, Chicago, San Diego or Los Angeles. I'm sure at one time all those places were small, quaint wonderful places to live and raise a family.
Cold and flu season hits the hardest in the middle of the night
The first part of this column is not for the faint of heart.
Byway won't hamper Sandpoint's growth
What would the other downtown Sandpoint look like? Instead of thousands of obnoxious big, polluting big trucks down the main street it could be closed completely from vehicle use, turn the street into a plaza, small trees, flowers, benches (everywhere) some with coverings, nice lights for winter shopping; yes, even a little snow falling.

Bill improves health, while saving money
Abortions, unwanted pregnancies, unhealthy mothers. We can change these into healthy mothers with healthy babies. This week, Idaho's Senate Health and Welfare Committee considers "Healthy Women, Healthy Babies" — legislation that allows low-income families to receive health care services resulting in healthier mothers and babies, fewer unintended and untimely pregnancies, and therefore many fewer abortions.
State of our local union?
The president has recently done his state of the union address, and it brought to mind for me the "local" state of our union. There seems to be a record number of law enforcement officers in this area, which should make people feel safer right? Except, there are also a record number of "Constitutionalist."

State must take strong stand for students and education
Enrollment at Idaho's four-year colleges and universities keeps going up — unfortunately, the same can't necessarily be said of the state's commitment to keeping costs affordable.
Taking care of business keeps community viable
I hope that the Planning Commission, Planning and Zoning, and the council will not be overly influenced by what appears to be an intense minority and, perhaps, even a majority, that thinks "views" and "character" sustain the viability of a community which we all hold dear. Our city was founded on neither, has survived on neither and will prosper on neither, and a sensibly applied ordinance raising the height limit by 15 feet will not even inflict a flesh wound on either.

City's noise ordinance doesn't make sense
It's, indeed, refreshing to read in your paper that Sandpoint continues on the cutting edge of creating an eminently livable community. How many of us have been annoyed by the senseless sound of our neighbors' excessively high-decibel behemoth lawnmowers audaciously chewing up green space at the ungodly hour of noon? Sandpoint, as reported in the Bee, may be the only community in America to confront this infamy head-on … what other community in America has legislated the banning of the noise of lawnmowers during daylight hours? Thanks, dear Bee, for reporting it, and thanks, Sandpoint City Council, for keeping my home town on the cutting edge!

Will residents spy for illegal tourists?
On Wednesday the city council finally passed the long-debated ordinance on vacation rentals, or tourist homes, for the city of Sandpoint. After 10 months of delirious debate and thousands of dollars in research, the council has sentenced an innocent form of property use to death. Over the 10 months of research, the citizens of Sandpoint have overwhelmingly stood against this ordinance through public testimony and written letters. Not one problem, incident, or police report was given as evidence in this courtroom drama to warrant such a drastic measure. The final verdict came with a 4 to 2 vote to pass the ordinance at around 6:30 p.m.

Bill filled with hatred for gays
When I was young, marriage was ritual of passage into the adult world. We were someone's children until we got married. Then, we concentrated on a career, building a home and becoming responsible citizens. Hollywood bombarded us with visions of love and romance and many fantasized marrying a Tarzan or Suzie Q but in my crowd most married the person they were dating when it came time to make the transition to the world of grown ups.

Defend women's, children's rights
Anyone who reads the Daily Bee has certainly seen the anti-abortion and Life Chain Prayer Vigil ads. I, myself, believe in the right for a woman to choose. Far too often, a female is not allowed the choice of whether or not to have intercourse. As disturbing as this is, there also is the fact that there are tens of thousands of unwanted children already struggling to survive a cruel fate. Obviously, abortion is not ideal; however, an unwanted pregnancy in an unhealth environment can end in horrible abuse, neglect, abandonment, or a brutal dealth. The numbers of unloved children is appalling. We shouldn't ignore these children any longer just to inflict our religious or political beliefs on others.

Local bicyclists don't obey the law of the road
Contrary to Mr. Fury's concerns, bicyclists in the greater Sandpoint area are a hazard to themselves and the public at large. On any given day from spring through fall, one can observe bicyclists traveling the wrong way on one-way streets, riding against traffic on two-way streets, ignoring traffic lights and stop signs, riding on sidewalks and in crosswalks and cutting in and out of moving traffic. In addition, most of the riders are in their late teens or older and seem to ignore the benefits to be derived from wearing cycling helmets.

Homes will hurt road, displace old farm
We would like to express our appreciation to councilwomen Sandy Lamson and Alison Burghstahler for listening to the concerns of neighbors of the property recently annexed into the city of Sandpoint. Unfortunately, their "no" votes and the opinion of the planning commission were not enough to prevent the property between Mountain View Drive and Woodland from being annexed.

Runway plan will make airport safer
This letter is in response to Mr. Blake's letter in Sunday's Daily Bee about the runway at Sandpoint Airport. Yes, there is a plan to move the runway to the west by 60 feet. That is only one of four options and it is called Alternative 4. Alternative 4 would also require that we close the runway for three months during the summer for construction.
