When Idaho lawmakers convene in January, they will be asked to consider a complex agreement aimed at settling a claim made by the Nez Perce Tribe to every drop of water in the Snake River. Because of a treaty signed by the Nez Perce Tribe and the federal government in 1855 granting the tribe the right to take fish from the river, the tribe believes it has rights to the water as well.

Region's soldiers deserve community's backing
I faithfully read the Bee every day, and there are few stories more important than a local man going off to Iraq … at least in my opinion. While there has been coverage of our local men and women going off to war, I haven't seen any follow up on their families and how they are managing. Given the tense situation in Iraq now with local elections coming up, it is a dangerous time to be arriving in Iraq.

Make voice heard on building heights
You may have only two opportunities to make your voice heard on an issue that will affect Sandpoint for many years to come. The most important one is today, Jan. 18, at 5:30 p.m. The Sandpoint Planning Commission is holding a public hearing at Sandpoint City Hall on changing the current ordinance that bans buildings over three stories within the city limits. The next one is sometime in February before the City Council — after the planning commission makes its recommendation. Input before that recommendation is made will have the most impact.
Abandoning pets is despicable, cowardly
This is an open letter to all the people who make the heartless decision to abandon their animals. If I was allowed to use expletives in this letter I would have a few choice ones for you. I have a really difficult time even beginning to understand the mentality of someone who would choose to do such a thing. To whomever dumped all the kittens at the Clark Fork dump, to the person who dumped the kitten three miles up Lightning Creek and to the person who dumped the black and orange cat on the same road; you're a class act! The kitten was extremely ill and its eyes were completely matted closed. You obviously did not want to spend any money on it so you chose to abandon it. The black-and-orange cat was so cold and so emaciated last night it could barely move. She is literally some fur and skin draped over her spine and ribs. We have been trying to catch her for at least a month. Last night she was so cold and starved she finally gave in to us.

As a visitor to this wonderful town of Sandpoint, I am sometimes in awe of the large differences the minority have with the majority.
Most recently it has been with respect to Jesus Christ. How dare someone actually metion his name, much less publish it on a sign. For most it has been a fear that Jesus is being pressed upon them as though being forced to wear a coat out in the cold. I believe that there is a large fear of God amongst many. His name is uttered and people become angry, and you can hear the fear in their voices and read it in their letters.

While I may make occasional fun of NICAN, I usually try and refrain from singling out an individual for personnel attacks. I don't call into question their right to a position, I'm calling into question their position as being wrong.
