Mail policies are sign of overbearing police state

I'm holding to the challenge of an overbearing police state. Although an adherence to a script of law is admirable, the power of authority circumvents the over-rinding purpose of legal enforcement. General Westmorland had overstepped his boundaries in Vietnam. Mr. James Blake has the right idea for protection of our values. A letter opener can't be sent but grenades and semi-automatic guns can?

Survey failed to talk to all downtown businesses

What strikes me most about Bill Litsinger's recent Vox Populi is not its lack of any fresh take on the Downtown Sandpoint Business Association or the business improvement district but rather the circulation of yet another survey designed to reinforce an already held position among people who share that position. Nobody asked me. Nobody has ever asked me and I've been a downtown businessman for just short of 13 years.

NICAN, 'UCAN' keep byway away from the west side

Thanks, but no thanks, NICAN. It's very generous of you to offer up the west side for the Sandpoint bypass. What's not good for your backyard is just fine for mine? How arrogant. Please justify to me why saving a couple of thousand feet of Sand Creek, trumps the destruction of tens of thousands of acres of wildlife habitat and wetlands, thousands of feet of riverbank to accommodate a new bridge and the uprooting of hundreds of families. Not to mention the overwhelming escalation in costs and delays. How can you, in all seriousness, constantly play the "environmental" card when the alternative you promote would be an ecological disaster?

NICAN's lawsuit simply does not make sense

It was with a great deal of relief that I read in this morning's paper of Ms. Sedler's filing of another lawsuit against construction of the Sand Creek Byway. (One cannot help but wonder why it is necessary to bow and scrape to the supposed sensibilities of those opposed to the project by calling it a "byway" rather than a bypass — but, I digress.) I had become concerned of late that the public spirit in the local affiliate of CAVE (Citizens Against Virtually Everything) had run out of steam and logic had become the governing mode of their behavior.

This is a statement of goals which are impossible to attain. "Grade level" performance in any subject was determined long ago by what 50 percent of children ("the average child") can be expected to achieve in any subject at any grade. We also have statistics on what the "average height" of children is expected to be at each grade level.

My experience in obtaining an advanced degree in the biological sciences is quite different from that described by Mr. Hohf in his letter of June 16. They accept it because they understand that the TOE is the only scientific explanation for the diversity of life on earth that is in agreement with all the factual evidence.
