Happiness is as simple as your state of mind
I once heard someone say that happiness is basically a feeling of being content most of the time. It's not found in the possession of "things" or through the existence of someone else. And, even though it may sound trite, happiness comes from within.

Insure future growth
Paul Herndon's letter to the editor speaks volumes about why Bonner County needs a building department. It is true many things that are left to government oversight should be left up to personal or private responsibility. Unfortunately, not everyone follows the rules especially if there is no one to enforce the rules. I know this from experience. I recently built a house in Bonner County and was able to occupy without any final inspections though I am now in compliance with state inspections. I know that I could have done so without compliance. Not everyone will do so.
A Woman of Wisdom
I've been away for the past several years and so was unaware of the latest honor Sandpoint had invented to recognize women active in the community. But when my mother called me to inform me she had been chosen as one of this year's recipients, and she wanted all of her children to attend, I realized it must be important.
Concerns about Heights
Here are some of my concerns about the Panhandle State Bank building. The residential portion, touted as a benefit, does nothing to ease the shortage of affordable housing in town. Having 375 cars converging on one block can only make our traffic problems worse. It displaces a centrally-located grocery store, cinema, and laundramat. Businesses renting office and retail space in this building will be leaving vacant space elsewhere. A building this tall would require the purchase of a new fire truck, with all the associated expenses. Bottom line is PSB does not need a 60-foot building to consolidate its employees in one location. In my opinion, this design is out-of-scale for our town. We have to ask ourselves if their vision for Sandpoint is in line with ours. For me personally, it is not.

County doesn't need a building department
Although not a subscriber to your paper, I occasionally read it online. While I am not naive enough to believe that papers are unbiased, it sure would be nice if they were so. As an occasional reader, I see a clear bias by your paper toward the county having a building department, and toward the city allowing taller buildings. A person who had some credentials and experience to speak out against a building department had his dirty laundry researched and aired in yesterday's edition, almost as if it were an attempt by the paper to show that all opposed to a building department might be of the same lot. I have not seen a similar effort by the paper to research such individuals as Jeff Bond and Debbie Ferguson, both proponents of a building department (not to imply that there would be any dirty laundry to air on these individuals, as I do not know them, and they may in fact be far more upstanding than I am).

State should lower route's speed limits

Building codes impact everyone
If you think you might be in favor of the International Building Code in Bonner County, consider this. If adopted, the code would apply to anything built, constructed, altered, repaired, converted, moved, etc. According to ICC's own handbook, section 101.2 of the code applies to "virtually anything" and the definitions of building and structure are "so inclusive that the code intends that any work of any kind that is accomplished on any building or structure comes within the scope of the code. Thus, the code would apply to a major high-rise office building as well as to a small wooden fence that might enclose a portion of the rear yard of a person's property."

Where is consistency for height proposal support?
I am surprised by the Bonner County Economic Development Corporation endorsement of the raising height ordinance in the Harold's IGA area of downtown Sandpoint. I do believe this area should be allowed higher buildings. However, using the potential loss of jobs from Panhandle State Bank should not be used as a threat for our making a decision. Is BCEDC trying to hold Sandpoint hostage with PSB's threat for leaving the city? It has been my understanding that BCEDC would not be a political animal figuring that politics would polarize the directors' views and result in indecision on their parts, making the corporation impotent.
Referendum deserves community's support

'Whopper' of a building too much for Sandpoint
As I look at this drawing of Panhandle State Bank's proposed new headquarters, I am forced to wonder. I was first under the impression that PSB needed a large building to house its corporate offices and employees. That seemed fine and dandy, after all, we would hate to see those folks and their jobs relocate to who knows where. But I see a different picture emerging here. This whopper of a building is not just for PSB's personnel, but it contains a whole lot more. Commercial space and two floors of residential units. It appears that PSB in fact only needs a small percentage of this space to service its needs. Pushing the height limits upward to accommodate penthouse suites is pushing the limits all right!

What would Jefferson do about building department
The ongoing dispute over the building department, pits our individual freedom against the special interests of Realtors, architects, government agencies, financial institutions, etc. Hopefully, the county commissioners will reject this special interest attempt to further expand our county government which is already ballooning at more than twice the rate of inflation and population growth, combined. As Thomas Jefferson once said, "If we can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people, under the pretext of taking care of them, we must be happy."

Advisory vote only way to know public's opinion
One significant change is pending in Sandpoint — and residents can vote on it the week of May 9. In the April 26 Daily Bee, David Keyes told it like it is when he stated that the proposed increase in permitted building heights directly benefits Panhandle State Bank. Why was everyone careful not to say this in the City Council meeting last week? At the Planning Commission meetings much of the testimony revolved around how important it was to PSB. Why the change?
