Proposal creates many concerns, questions
Regarding the upcoming levy vote on Sept 5, I have a few concerns and questions.
Vote yes on Sept. 5 on school district levy
Reading the article on poverty in last week's paper I thought about the antidote to poverty, which is education. Education provides equal opportunity to all. In our country we agree to provide a free primary education to all our children no matter what their means. Yet it is not truly free, for we as adults must provide the facilities to educate the future generation.

Byway will improve traffic, ease air pollution problem
After, once again, battling my way through downtown Sandpoint's traffic gridlock, I would like to thank the Sand Creek Coalition for their efforts in delaying the long overdue Sand Creed Bypass. I'm sure that they cite environmental concerns as a basis for their continuing lawsuits. I would like to point out that the part of Sand Creek in question, is no longer a creek, it is part of Lake Pend Oreille's backwater. The Sand Creek Coalition, by continuing to delay the bypass, has kept Sandpoint in its ever-increasing traffic gridlock, with its slow moving congested traffic. This has served to enhance Sandpoint's air pollution problem.

Support our children and vote yes on levy

Bypass critics have an ulterior motive
Mr. Potter, recently of Piedmont, Calif., and now of the Seasons condos, founder and as far as I can tell, only member of the Citizens for the Sandpoint Tunnel, (address is a real estate office), except the usual NICAN suspects, suddenly has spent a lot of his own money, and suspicious zeal just at the daring NICAN crusaders have, (wink, wink), fighting the Sand Creek Byway with a more complicated, expensive and disruptive version of the old through-town proposal.
Byway backers are wrong in their support
A recent editorial comment from Larry Fury referred to those of us who advocate a tunnel, rather then the byway — as the bureaucrats call it — "… featherbrains."
Why stop at milfoil?
For the first time in many years when I get into my boat and leave my dock, I do not have to stop and clean the milfoil off of my property when I exit Fry Creek. I personally want to thank everyone involved in the spraying that eliminated the Eurasian milfoil, for now anyway. Property tax relief, like beauty, in eye of beholder
In the case of the governor's proposal, supported by all our local legislators when they voted for an even more onerous plan during the regular session, it will relieve all property tax payers of the school tax levy for maintenance and operations. To pay for that, the plan increases the sales tax by 1 percentage point to 6 percent.
