Vote yes on Sept. 5 on school district levy

Reading the article on poverty in last week's paper I thought about the antidote to poverty, which is education. Education provides equal opportunity to all. In our country we agree to provide a free primary education to all our children no matter what their means. Yet it is not truly free, for we as adults must provide the facilities to educate the future generation.

Byway will improve traffic, ease air pollution problem

After, once again, battling my way through downtown Sandpoint's traffic gridlock, I would like to thank the Sand Creek Coalition for their efforts in delaying the long overdue Sand Creed Bypass. I'm sure that they cite environmental concerns as a basis for their continuing lawsuits. I would like to point out that the part of Sand Creek in question, is no longer a creek, it is part of Lake Pend Oreille's backwater. The Sand Creek Coalition, by continuing to delay the bypass, has kept Sandpoint in its ever-increasing traffic gridlock, with its slow moving congested traffic. This has served to enhance Sandpoint's air pollution problem.

Supporters of byway are in the minority

After reading Mr. Lawrence Fury's letter in the Daily Bee (Aug. 30, 2006), I felt compelled to respond. Mr. Fury should understand that his viewpoint is in the minority. Bush thumbing nose at American people

This week George Bush thumbed his nose at the majority of the American people, a majority that supports embryonic stem cell research. This is consistent with the way he has governed and shows his willingness to impose his spiritual and religious beliefs on the bulk of Americans who may not share them.

A tunnel or an on-grade by-way for Sandpoint

I read with interest the article in Sunday's paper regarding a tunnel option to the byway. I spent the last 35-plus years in heavy construction as an engineer, superintendent project manager, and then owner of construction company involved in many similar projects.

Animals can't read warnings on chemicals

It is a good thing for our Daily Bee, for it has warned me not to water my vegetable garden on certain days because the water will be poisoned with chemicals (my shallow well is close to the river). We must also be thankful for the signs telling us not to go swimming so we would not be poisoned ourselves.

More than 500 swimmers from around the northwest took to the water in the 1.76 mile Long Bridge Swim Saturday in Sandpoint. A fierce headwind and monstrous waves made for a very challenging swim in 'the northwest's premier open water swim.' All told, there were a record 474 swimmers that finished the race.

Education helps you keep bats at bay

Bats use roosting niches that are indoors (inhabited buildings, out buildings, barns, warehouses, semi-enclosed spaces (loading docks, entrance foyers), partially sheltered spaces (porches, carports, pavilions, highway underpasses, bridges) and open structures. Once there, active bats infestation can have severe economic aesthetic effects, often entwined with public health issues.

Property tax relief, like beauty, in eye of beholder

In the case of the governor's proposal, supported by all our local legislators when they voted for an even more onerous plan during the regular session, it will relieve all property tax payers of the school tax levy for maintenance and operations. In Bonner County that amounts to as much as a third of our property tax bill from last year. Granted, that sounds like a great break — true property tax relief. To pay for that, the plan increases the sales tax by 1 percentage point to 6 percent.
