Lawmakers made the right move

I was pleased to hear that our local legislators are in favor of including both the land and the home values in the Homeowner's Exemption. Adding the land value into the equation creates the kind of meaningful property tax reform we need.

Something must be done about aggressive drivers

This might possibly be called an ode to Bottle Bay Road. There are some of us who remember when it was a narrower, washboard, graveled and less-traveled road.

I'm really astounded by the amount of litter on our streets, roads and highways, and by Sand Creek and Lake Pend Oreille and the surrounding area. When I go walking with my friend, we both take plastic bags and pick up trash along the way.

The problem is design, not the driving public

After reading Sunday's blame-the-drivers article, I felt compelled to respond. First, why does the Daily Bee feel the obligation to be the police department's mouthpiece for how the public navigates the labyrinth of dilemmas engineered into the roads. It's about time Sandpoint moves into the real world of traffic management.

Lawmakers explain homeowner's exemption

The Legislature has been addressing a number of tax bills aimed at providing property tax relief. One of these bills, House Bill 421 (H B421), increases the homeowner's exemption from the present $50,000 total exemption to $75,000. HB421 also includes land in determining the full benefit of the exemption whereas the current homeowner's exemption does not.

Project's report raises more questions than it answers

At exactly the same time that Gov. Dirk Kempthorne was supposed to be at the town square — 5 p.m. today — to initiate the telemark events at Schweitzer, an event of much grater impact will be taking place at the Bonner County Courthouse. The Planning and Zoning Commission will be holding a public hearing on whether to rezone 126.4 acres south of Highway 200 for expansion of the Hidden Lakes golf course and residential development. The zoning change would be from agricultural to recreational.

Oscars bring about thoughts of sports movies

South Division cannot handle increased traffic

South Division Street cannot support traffic for another 75 families. The street is already active enough with the Northshore traffic. There are school buses and more traffic coming out of Lilly Avenue onto South Division. People's pets have been run down — three that I know of — as a result of vehicles going way over the speed limit. There are two schools — the Montesori and the charter school, directly across and next to the proposed 10-acre subdivision — from which children walk to and from on the bike path, as well the street itself. The Federal Building is without a sidewalk so the children are forced to walk on the street.
