November focuses on diabetes awareness, education
What do a Hispanic, 11-year-old girl in the city and a Caucasian, 80-year-old man in the country have in common? Very possibly, diabetes. This disease affects hundreds of thousands of people all over the country; both young and old, rich and poor, urban city-slicker or rural recluse.

Prop 1 is needed for quality public schools
I have been asked about Proposition 1, the ballot measure that would increase funding for Idaho's public schools. While the Lake Pend Oreille School Board, of which I am a member, has not taken a position on Prop. 1, I can share with you what it would mean to the district if it should pass.
Crossett, Clemons, Dye pass the litmus test
How should I vote, that's the question we all ask before an election. One litmus test is have the candidates been in office before and or what kind of education, experience and commitment do they bring to the table.

Anderson gives N. Idaho a strong voice in Boise
Rep. Eric Anderson recognized the terrible damage the invasion of Eurasian milfoil was doing to our lakes. He took the time to study the issue, became very knowledgeable, and then he lobbied the Idaho Legislature to convince them to provide funds to attack this invasive weed that was destroying our beautiful lakes.
Judie Conlan has the experience for the job
It was disappointing for me when Jerry Clemons chose not to run for commissioner. I was equally disappointed, however, when he chose to run for assessor against Judie Conlan. I've known Judie all my life and don't know a more sincere person or capable Bonner County public employee. And to listen to those around her, is to here nothing but admiration.

Proposition 2 is bait-and-switch politics. It was put on the ballot by New York City real estate billionaire Howard Rich.
Steve Elgar working to help North Idaho
Steve Elgar has worked hard to help the working people of North Idaho. Steve is in favor of, and will vote for, raising the minimum wage. He has been working to help Bonner County residents obtain affordable health care, is on the board of the Partners in Care Clinic and is a member of a task force working with local businesses to provide health care to employees.
This election really does matter
Nationally, statewide and locally, it's hard to deny that these mid-term elections are important.
Crossett, Dye will help, not hurt, county residents
Why choose someone who uses his mouth rather than his mind and education to "fix" Bonner County?
Fire the incumbents and vote for change
A disconnect exists between incumbent politicians and the people. This was evident at forums. Incumbents spoke as if they shared a common brain. Career politicians said they were qualified because they were already there, as if we should trust seniority.

Conlan's experience needed by county
We need an assessor with appraisal training and experience to straighten out the mess the state made of our property values. That's why I support Judie Conlan for assessor. She is a lifelong resident of Bonner County who cares about the people who live here. In my opinion, that's what we need now.
Don't let claims by Rich, Mueller fool you
It is important for everyone to vote. We must not be fooled by the claims of Bud Mueller and Lewis Rich when they say they will save us money by disbanding the county EMS program, and the planning and zoning department. Both of these candidates would not serve this county in a positive matter. Write in Karl Dye as he has the maturity, education and experience to have this county move forward.
Bee announces candidate picks
Bonner County cannot afford to have a train wreck in our county commission.
Scott, Conlan are friendly, experienced
In my business dealings with Judy Conlan of the Bonner County Assessor's Office, and Marie Scott, Bonner County Clerk of the District Court, I have found their offices to be extremely helpful and friendly. I would urge that they both be returned to their respectful positions as Bonner County assessor and clerk.
Theft of rack cards amounts to bullying and censorship

Keough led the charge on property tax reform
The homeowner's exemption was increased last legislative session for the first time since the voters put it in place by initiative in the 1980s. Shawn Keough led the charge to get it done. Plus, Shawn pushed for an inflationary factor to make sure the homeowner's exemption will continue to grow as our market grows. As a result, next year the exemption will be over $89,000.

Lewis Rich devoted to making county better
I have known Lewis Rich for many years. He has operated a successful automotive repair shop in Bonner County for 26 years (no small accomplishment) — he has also devoted his time to a lot of volunteer work in several fields. I would hate to see this good guy defeated in November because someone else is funding this "Karl Dye write-in" campaign.
SHS lands dozen on All-IEL squads
Indicative of the high quality of soccer played in Sandpoint, the boys and girls All-League soccer teams announced monday were littered with Bulldogs.
Bud Mueller has cost Bonner County plenty
You just can't believe what Bud Mueller says. In separate public forums, Bud stated that he didn't cost the county much with his past misdeeds. According to public records, the cost in settling just some of Bud's suits was significant. The county's insurance provider paid out well over $200,000; the county paid $45,000 and our insurance premium increase over $140,000 i
Keough led charge to cut property taxes
Shawn Keough led the charge to help us with our escalating property taxes. Learn facts on ballot's many propositions, advisory votes
You've seen the commercials. You've read the ads. You've heard about the candidates and issues from friends, campaign brochures or political pundits.
Select carefully when you go to the polls
It is time to start making your choices for the voting booth. This time, listen carefully to their messages of allegiance. If the allegiance is to a party then they need to be removed or bypassed. We are at a point in time where the division must stop or we as a country will perish. It is that serious. There are many united against us so we must be united. If you listen to the response of the incumbents when responding to a national crisis you will find that they care only how it affects their party not America. They lend to a divided America not a united one. Choose carefully this time.

Why are community's gas prices still so high?
It seems that we who live way up in North Idaho in a small town called Sandpoint have gold coming out of them there pumps at the gas stations. When the average price in the rest of the country is at about $2.20 per gallon and goes as low as $2.03 in some places, we are still shoveling out our mortgage payments to someone that must really need it.
Alternatives need to be considered on the byway

Helen Chenoweth-Hage was a giant for individual ideals
In the wake of news that Helen Chenoweth-Hage was killed last Monday in Nevada, those who knew the former Idaho Congresswoman talked about her strength, her penetrating knowledge of history, and her staunch defense of conservative principles. Some credited her as the primary force behind the resurgence of the Republican Party in Idaho, where she took the party's helm in the '70s as its executive director and became U.S. Rep. Steven Symms' chief of staff. And some privately reviled her as paranoid, personally backward and even prejudiced.
Hold trio accountable for unconstitutional legislation
Rep. Butch Otter and Senators Craig and Crapo are back from Washington, having voted "yes" on the Military Commissions Act. This radical legislation undermines the constitutional right to a fair trial under the 5th and 6th Amendments. This act denies the accused access to evidence against him/her and allows use of secret and coerced evidence. It denies the right to a speedy trial, allowing detention virtually forever without being charged with any crime. It grants the Bush administration wide latitude in interpreting Geneva Convention mandates, a change that prominent GOP members have said will leave our military men and women in jeopardy as other countries follow. It abandons Habeas Corpus (the right to demand a showing of lawful grounds for detention) dating back to the Magna Carta (800 years).
Where are the visionaries on the proposed byway?
My husband and I boated into Sandpoint recently, we were going to enjoy a nice lunch and take a walk through town. As we entered the marina we saw several survey sticks in the middle of the boating channel, toward the boardwalk. We were shocked to see where the bypass will go; until we actually saw those survey markers and could visualize the whole thing; well, it just made us sick and sad.

Will the 'right to work' law drive the center to the left?
There is no doubt that if you had to identify the labor movement with one political party it would be the Democrats. Not exclusively, but certainly more often than not. Commissioners are to blame for assessments
An article written in the Daily Bee on Sept. 15, 2006, concerning the fact that property owners have no right to appeal our new property tax assessments. After reading the story, I was left wondering why a very important part of the story was left out — that being why we have no appeal rights. Bonner County Commissioner Karl Dye was quoted as saying, "We don't have to agree with it — it's wrong." What is very wrong is that our elected county commissioners decided not to do their job of hearing all the appeals, and instead threw up their hands, calling for a rollback to last year's assessments. The State Tax Commission, however, could not legally accept that proposal, which the commissioners had to know — if they did not, they would be very lacking in good sense and knowledge. We can appeal our new assessments but most likely would have very little chance of winning as the Idaho State Supreme Court ruled in a 1982 case that would could not appeal an assessment made by the State Tax Commission. So, by not doing their job, our county commissioners can now carry the weight of accountability of our present plight quite heavily upon their own shoulders, and I hope this is remembered when election time rolls around shortly.
