Don't give up on tax fight
Today (Sept. 11) I called the Bonner County Assessor's office and asked if I would be able to protest my taxes. I was politely told that no I could not, but that I could get a form from Marie Scott and send it to Boise.
Absentee ballots are available
SANDPOINT — Absentee ballots for the Nov. 7 general election are available at the Bonner County Clerk's Office.
Editorial
City taxpayers are the big losers in the rejection of Southside Water and Sewer District's wastewater proposal by the Sandpoint City Council's Public Works Committee.
Salvage or burn
The rains are finally coming, and with cool nights, the fire season is coming to a close. Hundreds of thousands of acres were burned and many millions of board feet of timber killed. Will this timber be salvaged or left to rot?
We're Number One!
Congratulations, Idaho, at being the state with the most expensive gasoline in the U.S! Over 40 cents a gallon more than the national average. And Sandpoint certainly must rank up there as the most expensive in the state. How about if the folks that have been gouging the tourists (and the rest of us) all summer with gas prices that were on average 20 cents a gallon more than Coeur d'Alene, stop gouging your neighbors now that summer is over?
Complaints come after the fact
Why is it that people come along after a precedent and begin to complain about that precedent? A case in point: The outdoor shooting range was established before some of our newer homes. Now the homeowners complain about the noise.

Thoughts about evolution misguided
Many of the thoughts Harvey Pine offered in his article in the Bee ("Evaluation of evolution offers many thoughts," Aug. 25) were ill-conceived and based on inaccurate information. Mr. Pine included numerous misstatements about evolution in his article — so called "missing links" are a problem, it is a purely random process, it is not scientific, it is mathematically impossible, and there are problems with time constraints, to name a few.
Public school funding situation is madness
The public school situation is pathetic. I am writing this before the levy vote (Sept. 3), but I hope it doesn't pass. The article in the Aug. 27 Sunday paper about Christian parents pulling their kids out of public school should be a wake-up call. But it won't be.

Soccer practice. Meetings, Club functions. Fundraisers. PTA projects. The list is almost endless. The more people you add to the equation, the harder it is for families to sit down together and connect over dinner. LPOSD must learn money doesn't grow on trees
People who owned property in Bonner County as far back as 1980 can't be continually fooled by the Lake Pend Oreille School District. Back in the early 1980s, a bond levy was passed to build five new schools, of which the Kootenai School was one. Somehow, the Kootenai School wasn't built but the athletic field behind the high school mysteriously appeared. In the early 1990s, another bond issue was passed to build the Kootenai School, but now we find out that it wasn't finished. Where did this money go? And, as usual, the LPOSD is again sniveling for more money to finish this school.

ITD must prove it can answer hard questions
I found the recent article on the byway traffic study to be of interest. It seems to suggest that we should somehow be impressed that the byway will provide 16 years of service before it is at capacity. Recall that the it cannot be put into service until 2010 at the very earliest.

Levy opponents need to outline plan
Well, congratulation to those who opposed the school levy. I wonder what your vision for this area is. After visiting factories in Korea, China, Brazil and Mexico I know that America's future is not going to come from our labor. Others can do the same unskilled jobs much cheaper than we will ever be able to. If we are going to compete in a global marketplace America must do so on the abilities of our minds. In the past, it has always been better to be a B student in America than an A student in Bangalore (For veterans of this school system, Bangalore is in India). This is no longer the case, we are not just competing on labor and productivity, but the quality of the ideas we create.

GOP's tax relief plan shows need for change
The Idaho Legislature has voted in its version of property tax relief. While this legislation does offer a miniscule amount of property tax relief. It does nothing to address the basic problem and that is the present unlimited (pie-in-the-sky) method of setting property assessments.
Traffic mess causing plenty of aggravation
I was wondering if you could sue the city of Sandpoint for health-related problems driving in the absolute idiotic way the traffic is handled in and around town, because it makes my blood boil. I recently followed someone out of town, who stopped at literally every intersection (including BP gas station) to let several cars into the mix, and although admirable, what it did was cause a bottleneck that stopped traffic all the way from the Long Bridge up past Safeway.
Items included in budget in case grants received
All of us on Sandpoint's City Council are mighty concerned that we keep the property tax burden down. The article by R.J. Cohn in the Sept. 7 Daily Bee titled, "City adopts $26M budget," includes a significant misunderstanding. The proposed amendment to remove from the budget $500,000 for refurbishing Memorial Field would not have saved money nor reduced taxes. That, and a number of other items, are in the budget only so the money can legally be spent if donations or grants are received for the purpose.
