CAL has upscale retail store, not thrift shop
I'm writing in response to Dave Gunter's series on payday loans. The series is relevant and I had no idea the slippery slope a person could find themselves on. But I take great exception to Dave characterizing the Community Assistance League's Bizarre Bazaar shop as a "thrift" shop in the same vein as the dollar store or Goodwill. Show me the "thrift shop" where you can find such quality items as a fur coat, a Bob Mackie sweater or a Cuisinart Super Pro food processor on a regular basis!

Don't turn a blind eye to so-called 'improvements'
Our whole waterfront is disappearing not by erosion but by self-centered developers who think about themselves and not about the public good. They disregard sound environmental practices by cloaking their "plans" as improvements for the good of the area. Come on, who are you kidding? Do these developers have the common person in mind when they build these "impovements." Our public access to the shores of this once pristine lake have gone to these "improvements."

Payday loan regulations need to be tightened

Mine will only make the pollution worse
The worst possible threat from protecting water quality in northern Idaho is Revett's proposed copper mine. They plan to dump 3 million gallons of toxic mine waste into the Clark Fork River daily. They planned tunnels under the Cabinet Mountain Wilderness Area plus the toxic goop holding pond will pollute the Clark Fork below with even more toxic mine waste. Doesn't the Clark Fork drain into the jewel of the Panhandle? Over 140 years, Montana's mining efforts, especially the Butte and Anaconda mines, dumped their worst of the worst toxic mine waste directly into the Clark Fork. Their abuse turned the river into one of the five worst ever. The outdated 1872 Mining Law wants more from the Clark Fork. Being one of the top worst polluted rivers in the United States has ever had folks make, it now wants to make it even worse. To heck with water quality concerns. I guess Revett would pay well. Why haven't people with hearts and moral good sense stopped the plans to harm the Clark Fork? Silence means "Go ahead, make the bad even worse."

Honor means a lot to Kinderhaven 'Angel'
I would like to say thank you for the honor of "Angel of the Year" bestowed upon me and my family by the Kinderhaven board and staff. I am proud to be associated with this outstanding organization that provides a safe haven for children in crisis. There are many people in this community who have made various types of contributions to Kinderhaven, but few who match what Marsha Ogilvie and Barb Perusse have given over the years. Their endless dedication is an inspiration and gift to these children in need. I thank them and all who are associated with Kinderhaven for their dedication and passion.
Facility is community's newest shining gem
Through the holidays we were privileged to attend two events at the new Sandpoint Business & Events Center (also known as the old Sandpoint High School/Ninth Grade Center). The first being held on the ground floor — in what used to be the gymnasium — and the second, a wedding, on the third floor in the old auditorium. All I can say is … Wow! While there are still ceilings to hang, moldings to install and stair systems to finish (kind of reminds me of my own home construction project!), the renovation is well under way and the grandeur of this old building is being restored.
Community's future depends on schools
I have always been amazed at this community's generosity. If someone needs a helping hand, at least 10 stretch one out. If an organization like the Lions Club needs help, or the food bank in Athol gets robbed, it's the community that steps up to help.

Blessings continue to flow at Kinderhaven
As the New Year begins, it offers us at Kinderhaven a chance to reflect on the blessings this community has bestowed upon the abused and neglected children in North Idaho. Thanks to the generosity of individuals, organizations and businesses all year through and at the recent Festival of Trees, Kinderhaven will be able to keep its doors open for its 12th year. It has been a busy year at Kinderhaven with many children passing through its doors. It is unfortunate there is such a need for a place such as Kinderhaven, but at the same time, it is also a blessing that these kids have a safe place to call home.

Blackwater Worldwide is true terrorist group
Our government would like us to believe there are terrorists in the Middle East who are ready to pounce on us at any minute. As a result, our military is being rapidly depleted and those who come home are losing their Second Amendment right to own firearms.
Businesses feel forced to pay BID
In the Dec. 29, 2007, paper, the story "Most people opt to pay BID," failed to mention the fact that of the 321 businesses that are paying, also do not want to be sued by the BID/DSBA for not paying. They are paying under duress and would be sued by the same people who claim they are there to improve our businesses. We have to close when they put on their events because of the parking issues, which originally they said is how they would be helping us. We have lost 17 parking place since this was established. Talk about a slap in the face.

Distribution at funeral was unforgivable
On Saturday, Dec. 28, at Coffelt Funeral Home, my flyers were put on vehicles without my knowledge or permission. I own and operate Joe's Philly Steaks. I want to apologize to the families and friends of Thomas Brown and Steve and Pam Fox who had to come out and see these flyers on their cars. I take full responsibility for what happened at their time of loss. I can't even imagine what this has done to them. Sorry is not enough. I am saddened and mortified and I was shaken to my very soul when I found out.
Officials ensuring bright future for state, residents
I want to express a heartfelt thanks to you, my fellow Idahoans, for all the support I received in 2007. Your words of encouragement and friendship have meant more to me than I can possibly convey. I know full well that my accomplishments this past year would not have been possible without you. Washington, D.C. can be a very difficult place. Today it seems to be just overflowing with partisanship and bickering. Such a hostile political environment would be really hard to tolerate without the kind letters, emails and phone messages I have gotten from so many Idahoans.

Donald Walter Radbruch
Don Radbruch, a resident of Sagle, Idaho, for 20 years, passed away on Jan. 1, 2008, after a long illness. He was a World War II veteran, championship sprint car racer, avid historian and noted author.Born on April 14, 1924, in San Francisco, Calif., the first of two sons of the late Anne and Walter Radbruch. He was preceded in death by his brother Les, in 1980. He is survived by his wife, Naida; stepchildren, Thomas, Allison and Kevin Poore; and his two nieces, Nancy Radbruch and Diane Potratz and their children.Don became hooked on racing at a very early age, participating in Soap Box Derby races and attending local races with his family. After serving for his country in World War II and graduating from San Francisco College, Don was able to really get into racing. In 1948 Don began his racing career in earnest, racing sprint cars, and by 1951 he had won the American Racing Association championship. In 1954, Don switched his focus to the Midget Car races sponsored by the Bay Cities Racing Association and enjoyed that sport until 1967.Born to be a historian and author, as a teen Don began writing articles for several different racing publications. Don's professional career as a soil engineer kept him quite busy until he retired in the mid-1980s. He was then able to concentrate on documenting racing history. His interest and writing skills produced three books on the early history of auto racing. These books, "Roaring Roadsters", "Roaring Roadsters II" and "Dirt Track Racing" preserve the history of an important part of our American culture that otherwise would have been totally lost. Again, several racing publications continued to benefit from Don's research, including his weekly column to National Speed Sport News.Don was able to actually enjoy racing once more when he became involved in the vintage midget/sprint car group, the Pacific Northwest based- Golden Wheels. Don's interest and dedication to auto racing history continued until he took his final checkered flag.A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made the National Sprint Car Museum Foundation for the development of an automobile racing history research library. You may contact the foundation at 1 (800) 874-4488.

During the holiday season, make sure to remember nation's soldiers
Having served more than 20 years in the military and of those 20 years, 14 were served overseas. I fully understand the emotions our young soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines feel during the holiday season. I came across a poem I modified almost 30 years ago and thought you might find it eye opening. It was written originally by Clement Moore in 1822.
