Along with chilies prepared by our own cooks, facility residents and the public sampled the results of six outstanding recipes.

As long-time customers of Panhandle State Bank and loyal shareholders of its parent corporation Intermountain Community Bancorp (IMCB), we read with great interest the Thursday story in the Daily Bee regarding deconstruction of property adjacent to the bank's former — and current — buildings. We applaud the donation of deconstruction materials to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore and, in particular, strongly encourage the bank to go much more than the extra mile to preserve a community legacy — the historic trees that have graced the property for generations.

Care keeps granite hard to beat
One of the great building materials used today is granite. We use it for counter tops, cutting boards, flooring, shower walls, etc. Most folks use granite because it is very hard - 6 and 7 on the Mohr scale, diamonds being rated at 10. Most consider it waterproof; however, various studies have proven that water will penetrate granite over time.

Separate rules should not exist for right, left
I need someone in our community to explain the liberal's version of the freedom of speech to me. Several days ago I read an L.A. Times article titled "Effigy of Sarah Palin hanging by a noose creates uproar in West Hollywood." Steve Whitmore, an L.A. The mayor of West Hollywood, Jeffrey Prang, took charge of the situation and said, "I urge these residents to take down their display …" Wow, he "urged" them. What an amazing display of leadership.

Like parents, banks must learn to say no
If your child insisted upon playing at the edge of a cliff and all other means of persuasion failed to get him to stop, would you give him a spanking? By spanking I mean something that stings a little but does no physical harm. King Solomon, the wisest king who ever lived, wrote in the book of Proverbs the following statements about raising children: "Don't hesitate to discipline a child. A good spanking won't kill him. As a matter of fact it may save his life. Teach a child how he should live and he will remember it all his life. Discipline your children when they are young enough to learn. Community invited to share willow tree photos
I must write to thank Ward Tollbom for submitting his "best shot" of the Larch Street historic willow tree. Thanks for the pleasant memory, Ward. I miss that tree terribly. I would like to ask the community to submit other pictures of the old willow in different seasons. I hope the Bee will publish a spring, summer and fall photo as well. I find that I have just started a collection of old man willow photos, and I need more of them.

Why does community need so many banks?
Can someone please tell me why we need all of these new banks in such a poor economy with a population of only 6,000 to 7,000 people? Bank P has 3 branches including that three story, one city block building, that looks totally out of place in this area. The Bank MW has 3 branches in our area with a brand new multi-story bank that just recently opened. In my eyes a very ugly building. Who pays for all of these new banks? Are the Fed's going to bail these banks out of trouble if and when necessary which is almost a for sure scenario as they have on Wall Street and elsewhere across the country? Would not all of that money spent on new buildings been put to better use in our community and have those banks stay with one office such as Wells Fargo, Bank of America, and US Bank which are very small banks, I realize, compared to Bank P and Bank MW.

The 100-year-old and 80-year-old larch trees stood 100 feet, towering over this mountain meadow until my landlady, a recent transplant, had them cut down so her garden could get a little more sunshine. An old growth birch went, too. Other tall larch fell at the forest edge for a view. But now I keep my eyes cast down rather than out my apartment's picture windows. Sadly, I have lost the peace and comfort of living in this place. So much for "property rights."
