(Recently, I talked to Bev Wiley and she shared with me a story that had been given to her by Thelma Linstrum back in the 1980's. Thelma tells of her early days in Kootenai and some of her school experiences. Bev gave me permission to share the story with you that Thelma, in her own words, shared with her.)

Know the terminology before you vote
With all the media putting forth words like socialist, socialism, Marxism, Marxist, fascism and fascist, it got me to be really concerned. What are they talking about. Here in America. The red, white and blue. The pledge, "one nation under God." "In God we trust" on our money. What in the world is going on?

My Story
Last summer I was swimming along with my friend in the lake and a saw a delicious looking worm. I thought that a floating worm during the middle of a warm, sunny day was a little suspect, but I said to my friend 'what the heck, you only live once" and swallowed it whole. Suddenly I felt a sharp stinging sensation in the side of my mouth and the worm had developed a long spindle that was pulling me upward! I tried to resist, but the worm's appendage was too strong. My friend laughed at me as I was pulled from the water. I put my head in my shell and prepared for the worst. I imagined being shucked like a clam and devoured by a voracious Bigfoot. At least it was be over quickly, I thought.

Politicians should be changed often
I continually hear people complain about how the government functions. The first question I always ask "did you vote?" Almost always I hear the same answers: "No" or "I don't want to get called up for jury duty" or "My vote doesn't count."

Water is a critical issue in North Idaho. West to the Pacific Ocean and south to the Mexican border the arguments over water are becoming a continual way of life. Obama's record is the most liberal in Congress
An intelligent president is an asset if coupled with common sense and American values. Obama is intelligent, an excellent speaker. Last spring, the Idaho Conservation League worked with North Idaho legislators to help pass the Invasive Species Act of 2008. The Act places emphasis on keeping exotic invaders out of our lakes so that we can avoid contentious battles about how to eradicate an invading species after it has already made its home in our lakes.
Be aware and very cautious
I am writing this as a concerned citizen of this great U.S.A. I was in the seventh grade at the old Farmin School when J. Edgar Hoover, the head of the FBI at the time, came to our school. Anderson is effective leader for North Idaho
As an officer and an owner of JD Lumber, I can assure Bill McInerney that nothing Eric Anderson or any other state legislator could have done would have stopped the sale of our saw mill to Riley Creek. This was simply a good business decision on our part to sell, and on Riley Creek's part to purchase.

Destruction of sign was an immature act
To the North Idaho-style political commentator who served off the road to knock down my Obama/Biden sign, you are just re-enforcing the "stupid Bubba image" of at least one part of the Republican voter base. Be an informed voter and make a difference
Should everyone vote, or should only those people who have taken the extra time to be informed be allowed to cast a ballot on the first Tuesday in November?
Presidential election is a no-brainer for voters
The election for President this November is a no-brainer. I could give you a long list of reasons for it being a no-brainer; but, knowing the lack of attention span in the die-hard, blind, deaf, mute Idahoan Republican who always votes for party at the expense of country, I’ll limit the list to just one reason: Sarah Palin. Any candidate so cynical as to attempt to foist upon the nation a nincompoop as vice president doesn’t deserve our votes; he deserves our scorn; and that is what he will get from me on Nov. 4.
Hopefully, flaggers will be needed on Election Day
I sure hope someone is working on a traffic plan for Nov. 4, (detours or flaggers) due to the location of the Courthouse, and how hard it is to get in and out of on a normal day, I can imagine - at least I hope - the amount of traffic on that day. I think an assurance that we can keep traffic moving will encourage people to get in and vote.

Idaho voters are effectively disenfranchised in the presidential election. Idaho is so overwhelmingly red that a Democrat vote is useless and a Republican is a foregone conclusion. No wonder a presidential candidate has not appeared in Idaho since the primary elections.

Politicians ruin politics
I'd like to respond to the letters written by Bruce Johnson and Alice Samuelson in the Oct. 7 Daily Bee. Talk about diametrically opposed. Wow, what a country. These two are half a world apart.
Re-elect Anderson, Keough and Eskridge
This area is fortunate to have three of the finest legislators in Idaho, in Rep. Eric Anderson (R-Priest Lake), Rep. George Eskridge (R-Dover), and Shawn Keough (R-Sandpoint). All three have done excellent jobs representing us and certainly deserve to be re-elected.
Elgar will fight for timber jobs
My heart goes out to the 200 employees of JD Lumber who lost their jobs due to the closing of the mill. It seems that Riley Creek Lumber bought JD and then closed it to eliminate the competition. A simple google search on Idaho Campaign Finance Reports shows that Riley Creek has been a substantial contribitor to all of Eric Anderson's congressional campaigns. Shame on you, Eric, for not fighting to keep the mill open. After all, JD has contributed to your campaign in the past also.

Obama is the smart pick on November 4
When I read "Obama will say anything" by Mr. Johnson, I laughed so hard I nearly wet myself. I'd better be careful though, if we end up with another Republican in the White House I won't be able to afford my Depends undergarments. Or much else, including health insurance, since McCain's plan will only hurt women, and make them vulnerable to insurance companies, which will no longer be held to the stringent rules that keep them from denying us coverage.

Andrson is advocate for North Idahoans
Rep. Eric Anderson, District 1A, deserves the vote of every person in District 1. He is a passionate advocate for North Idahoans and has done great things on our behalf. For instance, in the 2008 legislative session he worked tirelessly to change the law so that voluntary emergency first responders who are injured in the line of duty or during training can obtain disability benefits equal to a paid full-time first rsponders if injured while performing their volunteer effors. For our North Idaho rural areas which rely on volunteers, this was a critically important bill.

Leave your Fords, Chevrolets and Oldsmobiles in park, because the car that drove the most cultural interest was produced under the brand name "Hudson."
Candidate understands issues, film industry
I want to thank Rep. Eric Anderson for his leadership in recognizing the need to provide assistance to the film industry in Idaho. He introduced a bill, H592, which will provide a 20 percent rebate on specific Idaho expenditures if at least $200,000 is spent in Idaho and when the production hires Idaho crew members. The bill has qualifiers that keep the assistance targeted to productions that hire Idahoans and caps the program on a per production basis for films made in Idaho. In April 2008, Michigan passed similar legislation. Results: In just 19 weeks, 60 films approved and thousands of jobs created there. This is a great thing for Idaho and my hat's off to Eric for his hard work to make this happen. Without his efforts, we wouldn't have this opportunity.

Does anyone notice that the negative strategies the McCain-Palin campaign is currently pursuing in recent weeks to incite its supporters — one based on hate, ignorance, and prejudice — are frighteningly similar to the type of rhetoric used by politicians during the 1950s and 1960s to keep America segregated on the basis of race?

For instance, in the 2008 legislative session he worked tirelessly to change the law so that voluntary emergency first responders who are injured in the line of duty or during training can obtain disability benefits equal to a paid full-time first rsponders if injured while performing their volunteer effors. For our North Idaho rural areas which rely on volunteers, this was a critically important bill.
Dangerous behaviors should be punished

Fiinancial mess made election decision easy
If Obama and Biden had to drop out and the Democrats ran Goofy (who would have a challenge explaining who he really is) for president and Bullwinkle (if rumors he was assassinated by an Alaska hockey-mom are incorrect) for vice president, I would vote for them over the Palin/McCain ticket. Why? Because the Republican Party should be accountable for the past eight years and our current crisis.

Do we know who Sarah Palin really is?
Sarah Palin told an interviewer from CBS that she accepted the nomination for vice president of the United States in the "blink of an eye." She did not stop to consider what was in the best interest of her family, she did not stop to think what was in the best interest of her state and she did not stop to think what was in the best interest of her country, especially considering her lack of knowledge of the national economy and foreign policy. She certainly did not think "country first." She just thought what was in the best interest of Sarah Palin.

Greedy do not deserve to be rewarded
It appears that by the time this opinion reaches the editorial page, you and I - every American taxpayer - will be on the hook for a $700 billion bailout of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, AIG, Lehman Bros., etc. The experts tell us the government - you and me - has to do this in order to avoid an economic meltdown. But not to worry, they tell us, we're looking out for the American taxpayer. If you believe that, I have a bridge to sell you.

With treatment, most people with mental illness can lead productive, fulfilling lives. Yet, mental illnesses have been stigmatized and criminalized.

Federal government has broken many promises
My promise to fellow Americans: Be you Republican or Democrat, I (the federal government) do hereby promise to all my servants a pursuance of the status quo, thanks to your continued support of career incumbents. Despite what I say, I promise:
Downtown businesses need to end unfair tax
This letter is to my fellow small business owners in Sandpoint. The Daily Bee article, "Downtown hit by closures" (Sept. 23), should be a wake-up call for careful running of our enterprises, with a lesson in there for us. The lesson? Quote: Downtown staple, Bearware Graphics … unexpectedly closed last week. Owner Kathleen Hyde, who also acts as manager of the Downtown Sandpoint Business Association … said she would continue her employment with the DSBA." And you can bet she will, for a guaranteed salary no matter how bad things may get for the rest of us. The BID tax we are billed quarterly for, pays her salary and the money she and the DSBA board spends of whatever. Wouldn’t you like to have the city pay you a nice salary this winter?
