City's bicyclists must follow the rules, too
First off, I appreciate the people who bicycle. I personally do not ride as much as I should or would like, but I do ride to work on occasion during the summer. With this in mind, I read Dr. Savarise’s article last week and was very glad that he reinforced that bike riders need to follow the appropriate rules. If they are riding, they need to follow the same rules as cars, except they can treat stop signs as yield signs. The unfortunate fact is, there are many riders who think they own the road and can do whatever they want.

Read, ask questions before heading to polls
On May 13, I went to the candidates’ forum at Sandpoint High School. About 130 interested people were there; should have been thousands (my opinion). Here were the people spending our local tax monies and, in hte same room, the people who wished to replace them. Those in power spoke of how good they were doing locally. I believed the treasurer. She said, “I know the job and I am doing it properly.” The rest of the Bonner County officials who spoke were hard to believe. The few words that the new candidates were given to express themselves were not really enough to form opinions.

Vote for those who best represent views
Absent anyone else explaining the nature of the forth coming elections let me explain how it is supposed to work:
Clemons has done the job right, lowered taxes
Since Jerry Clemons became assessor he brought a lot of untaxed property on to the rolls that necessarily lowers taxes for us all; he also “uncovered” about 300 homeowners who were falsely reporting their homes as their primary Idaho homes and thus avoiding taxes. Again, higher total valuation equals lower taxes. He utilizes his staff well and the staff morale is good from what I hear.
Harvey's experience make her the right pick
Applying for a job typically requires a detailed employment history. Employers request resumes to determine the most qualified applicant to fill a given position. When electing the officials that run our government, it is equally important to scrutinize the candidate’s qualifications. In the upcoming primary election, Tina Harvey’s experience in the Assessor’s office and in the world of property appraisal and public service cannot be matched.
Don't return to the past, retain Clemons
The year before Jerry Clemons became county assessor, county residents were stunned and outraged at having received assessments on their properties often twice as high in value as their assessments had been the year earlier.

Piehl is right person to serve us as treasurer
Bonner County’s Treasurer, Cheryl Piehl, would be the first to tell you she’s not a politician. Rather, she is a dedicated county employee with 20 years experience in the Treasurer’s office, a claim that cannot be matched by any challenger.
Mike Nielsen is a true Republican
My vote is going to Mike Nielsen for commissioner in District 2. I urge you to do the same.
Cheryl Piehl is natural choice for treasurer
I worked with Cheryl in an accounting firm prior to her working for the county. She was conscientious, fast learning, team player, tackler of any task, caring, honest, reliable, and a cautious spender.

Back those dedicated to the common good
Imagine what chickens’ lives would be like if farmers hired a couple of foxes to guard their hen houses. After being terrorized as their eggs were stolen, these hens would be eaten alive. The foxes, now multiplying and living comfortably, would take ownership of these farms.
A house divided is sure to fall
I find it a tragedy that the U.S. Congress is so divided about everything. It has nothing to do with what their respective parties are named, or even what those parties stand for - conservative or liberal. All of those in Congress have been elected by the people, and instead of working for the people, or the common good of all, as reflected in the Constitution, the majority work for the special interest groups, the money groups. Failure is inevitable. Congress is a house divided, and….

Abilities make Nielsen best choice for office
I am writing in support of Mike Nielsen for county commissioner. It has been my privilege to work with Mike within the Coolin Fire District and have watched the organization grow into a well trained, dedicated group of fire fighters; all because of Mike’s abilities and his eye on details. He knows how to organize, budget, and how to make tough decisions.

I support and endorse Mike Nielsen in his bid to become a county commissioner. I have known and lived in the same neighborhood with Mike for the past 10 years.
Nielsen is best pick for commissioner
I am writing in support for Mike Nielsen’s county commissioner candidacy. I know Mike through his tireless work ethic as the head of both the Priest Lake Search & Rescue group and has the head of the Coolin Volunteer Fire Department. Mike volunteers for these two leadership positions not as a means to fame and fortune (obviously) but as a caring member of the community who saw the need. Mike puts a ton of hours into both causes and performs a valuable service for reasons that are old fashioned. He cares. It is without hesitation that I support Mike and encourage other readers to do the same.

Young hasn't earned a return trip to office
As Joe Young goes around crowing about how he “solved” the Green Owl problem, I can only say, “excuse me?” By secretly purchasing an unsuitable parcel in the first place, Joe is the one who created the problem — it was only the hard work and dedication of the Green Owl Citizens Advisory Committee that brought a resolution. Joe attended only one meeting, and his input was minimal — as a member of the committee I know this first-hand.
Helmets save lives, reduce serious injury
It’s that time of year which brings us all outdoors enjoying the fine weather. It is the time that kids are out riding their bikes, skateboards and razor scooters. These along with other outdoor activities such as riding on an ATV call for the use of helmets, properly fitted to the child. As any emergency medical person will attest to, helmets provide an integral part in reducing serious head injuries.
Harvey dedicated to doing the job right
Bonner County taxpayers are fortunate to have a qualified candidate like Tina Harvey running for assessor.
If you vote results, Clemons is the pick

Early day justice often marked by disorder in the court
On Feb. 7 1901, Sandpoint became a real city and like all cities, it needed to be governed. It did not take long to realize that a place was needed for the governors as well as those who refused to be governed. Someone came up with the idea of combining the two and in 1904; a small building was constructed near the railroad station. The jail, with its four cells, was on the lower floor and upstairs the City Council sat on plain pine benches and made decisions that touched the life of the citizens. The use of pine benches was a stroke of brilliance because they discouraged the council meetings from turning into verbal marathons for people who delighted hearing the sound of their own voice. This new seat of power was called the “Apple Box.”

Character matters, vote for Clemons

Vote Mike Nielsen for county commissioner
Mike lent me his management expertise when I began my first outfitting business 10 years ago. Mike then stood behind me when things went a little screwy with the BCSO EMS personnel after an injury assistance call from the field. I now have two outfitting businesses and I know that Mike has my back today as he continues to command one of the premier SAR teams in the USA from Priest Lake.

Mike Nielsen will listen to the voters
Local elections are coming up again and we have a chance to bring to office a candidate with strong ethics, leadership and organizational skills. Those of us who know Mike Nielsen have seen him display these qualities over the years as he has developed and lead Priest Lake Search and Rescue and more recently when he was asked to take over the fire department’s leadership. If you want a commissioner who will listen to the voters, then Mike is your man.

Clemons is hands-on, hard-working assessor

Don't return office to problems of the past
We don’t need a certified appraiser to run the Assessor’s office. We need a good manager for the 32 employees in the Assessor’s Office. What we don’t need is what we had back in 2005 and 2006 when Tina Harvey was the supervisor of residential appraisers. I hate to recall how many protest meetings I attended because our appraised home values were so far off the mark.

Carpenter ants can built big problems
As most of you know my company does a lot of environmental work. Almost all of it involves both commercial and residential buildings. In my travels around the two counties I see lots of wet rot, dry rot, various kinds of fungal growth and carpenter ant damage. Generally, when you see one of the above, the property has all four types of damage. In this week’s article I would like to discuss one of the four elements – carpenter ants.

Young's experience invaluable for county
I have known Commissioner Joe Young for more than 20 years, from his days with Albeni Fall Building through the Bonner County Sheriff’s Office, to becoming a confident Bonner County commissioner. His past experience as commissioner sets him apart to take our county in a positive, forward direction.
Asking Dems to vote GOP was unacceptable
This letter is to express my disapproval of the ad by Tina Harvey, candidate for assessor in the upcoming primary. The ad referred to was on the front page of the Daily Bee on May 5. It encouraged Democrats to turn over the ballot and vote Republican for her. I am appalled at her lack of integrity.

Harvey has experience to be county assessor
The property owners of Bonner County need an assessor in office with a clear understanding and comprehensive knowledge of how the office works. Tina is the only candidate that can deliver on this kind of experience, having worked 15 years in the Assessor’s office under five different assessors. She managed the team of residential appraisers, honing her management and supervisory experience.
Nielsen will listen, serve county well
For the past 30 years I have spent a large portion of time representing your neighbors and friends in disputes with Bonner County. Mike Nielsen is hands down the most dedicated, and action oriented, public servant that I have ever met. Save money on legal fees and Excedrin for headaches. Mike will listen to your concerns and take action to protect your rights, without being forced to do so. ;

BAYVIEW — Think no one cares about a missing bench?
Clemons is best choice for assessor
Jerry Clemons and I served on the Kinderhaven board together. We have on many projects over the years, each an unqualified success. The last was the grand opening of The Children’s Garden dedicated to Hazel Hall. Jerry happily donned our wizard costume and gave it everything he had. Why? First, he adored Hazel Hall, and second, if it benefited children, he didn’t hesitate.
Vote Tina Harvey for a needed change

Clemons has history of successful leadership
We need Jerry Clemons to remain our Bonner County Assessor for an other four years. He is my son-in-law, so I have first-hand knowledge of his even temperament and genuine character. He has advised us in our personal real estate dealings and has acted as general contractor in the construction of several single family homes in Bonner County, built as investments to help supplement our income.
Appraise candidates on their qualifications
Is having once been an appraiser qualification enough for being elected assessor? Although Jerry Clemons hasn’t held that position he has been a county commissioner, city councilman and, for the previous three and a half years, Bonner County assessor. In addition to his extensive administrative background Jerry has more than 30 years of experience in all phases of real estate.

Harvey is positive change for county
Jerry Clemons got my attention in the previous election because he ran promising to lower Bonner County property assessments. Assessments have not changed over the past two years despite a significant decrease in property values. The assessments are at least twenty five percent higher than a realistic market value. Don’t believe your assessment is too high — talk to a member of the MLB.

SUVs left big footprint at Earth Day Festival
Some food for thought …
Americans need to take action at polls
I was disgusted by what I heard Obama say April 26 in a DNC commercial calling for the energizing of “Latinos, blacks, and women “ to come to the polls in November. I cannot help but feel this leader was disingenuous in his campaign promises of uniting Americans as this rhetoric is quite divisive if not outright racist. His condemning of the immigration bill in Arizona, before it was even signed by their governor, is further evidence of his racial bias toward his ethnic base.
Clemons has earned new term as assessor

Changing a former adversarial relationship with Idaho Tax Commission into a workable one. Instituting up-to-date assessing computer programs ignored by previous assessor. Opening the previously closed door of the former “assessor monarchy” to discuss possible error correction.
