Cops are going after the wrong people
I was reading your article on marijuana trafficking and thought to myself that it would be a much better headline to go after the crystal meth and heroin traffickers.

An inclusive society is enriched by differences

Right to an opinion applies to everyone
I’m a bit baffled by Mr. Hancock’s letter regarding a labor unions political endorsement. On one hand, he comments how lucky we are to live in a country where we voice our opinion but says it is a conflict of interest to allow labor unions and other public employees and public servants to open support a candidate.

Departments' endorsements seem unethical
How lucky we are to live in a country where we can write our local paper and voice an opinion. I find the letters from individuals during the election season especially interesting. But, I’m confused. If people are paid by taxpayers, either by direct stipend (such as Policemen) or receive other benefits of actual financial support such as use of a car or meeting house, uniforms, etc. should they, in their supported positions, endorse a candidate? I find this ethically unacceptable. Apparently, the Sandpoint Fire Department Union, district fire departments, ambulance service, et. al., see no conflict of interest in their endorsement of a candidate. Talk about scratching your own back. Bring on the laced Kool-Aid or Tony Soprano. I know “it’s only business.”
Will oligarchy be next form of government?
I get so tired of the right-wing drumbeat, people who wrap themselves in God and the flag, where if it is not said outright the subtext is you are un-American if you are not a conservative but rather a Nazi, socialist, communist who is bent on destroying our liberty and country. We are a republic which is a mixture of democracy and socialism and our economic system which is capitalism is the best system yet devised, where ideas can flourish and wealth is created by the development of those ideas privately.

Nielsen has interests of community in mind
When voting this I am a full-time resident at Priest Lake and have known Mike Nielsen for the past six years. Over my time being acquainted with Mike, I have seen him play major roles in Search & Rescue and the Coolin/Cavanaugh Bay Fire District as well as working to keep the communication tower on Sundance Mountain in good working condition. It has been evident that Mike has the best interest of the public and communities in Bonner County. When Mike says he’s going to do something, it gets done. Mike Nielsen will do a fine job as commissioner. He has my vote.
'A hard way to lose a championship'
Sandpoint falls 3-2 to Bishop Kelly in penalty kick shootout of 4A championship game
COEUR d’ALENE — For the first 100 minutes of the 4A state girls soccer championship, two of the best teams in the state essentially neutralized each other, as every ball was challenged and every yard of the pitch hard-earned.
Voters are poised to clean house in U.S.
Thank God the election is only two weeks away for the Democrats, as even one more month would assure the loss of the Senate as well as the House. Americans have had enough of Obama and the liberal-based vision for our country. The majority will clean out the name callers and replace many deluded and politically entrenched incumbents with new candidates who understand what Americas have been saying all along. We want less government intrusion, less spending, fair taxation and a Congress that listens to our voice.
It's your government, so get out and vote
Few things in life are as precious as our right to vote. Exercise that privilege on Tuesday, Nov. 2. Come on now, mark it down on the fridge. Marie Scott is qualified and in my opinion deserves another term, Mike Nielsen also gets the nod. Our local state team of Shawn Keough, George Eskridge and Eric Anderson also deserve to be re-elected. It’s your government, so vote. It is important.
Nielsen is best choice for some real change
I have got to know Mike Nielsen the last several months. As a Bonner County business owner with eight part-time employees, I have attempted to secure local contracts to no avail. Instead, the commissioners supported out-of-state contractors. Something is really wrong in the county.
Bonner County needs Nielsen
Bonner County needs Mike Nielsen. Mike represents the best of both worlds; he’s an experienced public servant and he’s not from California.

Bulldogs win dramatic game in PK shootout
POST FALLS — For an indicator of how emotionally draining Sandpoint’s shootout win over Wood River was in the semis of the 4A state tournament Friday afternoon at Post Falls High School, consider this: It took Bulldogs head coach Julie Pitre more than 20 seconds before she could finally find any words to answer a question after the game.
Pioneers' love of community helped build Sandpoint
(Lately, I have been wondering why people move to a town. It seems to me that some people fall in love with a town and want to become part of its history and growth. There are some that leave where there live because they can’t tolerate it anymore. They find the place of their dreams and, for some unknown reason, immediately try to transform it into the exact image of the place they wanted to escape. There are others who move to a town to exploit it for everything they can get out of it without thought of contributing anything except higher property taxes. Sandpoint is fortunate to have had people like the following pioneers who laid a good foundation of giving back to their community to make it a place a person is proud to call home.)

Be extremely wary of amendment HJR-5
Please consider this proposed amendment carefully when you vote. If the county is unable to raise the funds to pay for any buildings or improvements that are made to the local airports, costs will fall back onto the users and the voters. The only income the county has from the Priest River Airport is the hangar leases and rentals. We, as taxpayers do not need additional taxes.
All incumbents should be kicked out of office
With the elections coming up, I look at our choices. None of them are very good. It is said that doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result is the definition of crazy. For years people have been voting for the “lesser of two evils.” Look at the shape our country is in.

Gunter will be missed at the EBCL District
The East Bonner County Library District provides our community with the best library service of most any community of our size in the country. The main reason for this is Wayne Gunter, who has just retired. Mr. Gunter has been responsible for the budget of the library district since long before he became director.
Brian Orr is best choice for community
In these difficult economic times, I am amazed at the amount of money spent on county office election campaigns. Despite a modest campaign “war chest,” Brian Orr has acquitted himself very well in the public forums and radio interviews. As a former mayor and Bonner County commissioner, he has shown a real understanding of budgets and county issues. I rarely support a recycled candidate, Orr is the exception. He sat and with me and discussed Bonner County’s strengths and realities in today’s economic spartanism.
Amendment would hurt property owners
Homeowners and landowners beware — the proposed amendment reduces approval from two-thirds approval to 50 percent plus one. This means that those not owning anything get to approve tax increases for all of us that do own property.

City-funded system would be inefficient
It’s disappointing to see the city of Ponderay seeking to increase taxes to fund its proposed bus service. As economists James Bennett and Manuel Johnson have documented, tax-funded services typically have a 100-percent waste factor compared to private provision of the same service. The reason is the tax money comes in automatically, so it is not necessary to please consumers or to be efficient. Buses can run empty, administrators go to planning conferences in Hawaii.

Wanted: A new governor for all Idahoans
Keith Allred is running as a governor for all Idahoans this fall. His positive, cooperative attitude, and proven, problem-solving mediator abilities make him a gifted leader. If tax loopholes on powerful, special interests were closed, along with future, budget projections showing sizable increases, Keith emphatically states that public education cuts were totally unnecessary.

It's time to stand up and stop new taxes
Have you stopped to consider that we pay taxes every minute of every hour every day. Some would say that is nonsense. Is it really? Consider this fact. At night when you go to bed and the lights are out, you are paying taxes. How, you ask? Because your electric/gas stove, refrigerator and clocks stand ready for use and that requires electricity, which is being taxed for every second it’s being used. Everything you buy is taxed. Check out your phone bill and see all of the taxes you are charged monthly. Have you really examined your light bill lately? Gasoline has a 25-percent tax on it. My property taxes went up this year which I find strange especially since the value of the property went down. What’s up with that?
