IFG must uphold oath and protect all animals
Black wolf is the voice for truth. The exhibition of the black wolf in obvious pain and the ignorant behavior of the guy in the footage is the perfect example of “the normal” attitude here in Idaho toward the wolf. I find it interesting that Idaho Fish & Game is constantly defending itself and the so-called ethical trapper/hunter.
Gender rating costing women almost $1B
The health care law is working for women by helping them get the care they need. But some opponents of the law are fighting to take away these benefits and common sense protections. It’s critical that our community learns more about the importance of the law for women and their families and what’s at stake for us if it goes away.

Science, management will create diversity
In regards to the article about George Wuethner’s presentation given in Coeur d’Alene on predator ecology. I attended the presentation in Sandpoint the night before and what I thought was going to be an educational lecture was rather a night filled with condescending remarks toward hunters and ranchers, skillful use of outdated data, and a supposed “expert” comparing two completely different ecosystems — Minnesota and the Northern Rocky Mountains — as proof of some theory of his.

Let's make Sandpoint a true walking town
We’ve all seen the signs when driving into Sandpoint: “Sandpoint is a walking town.” Just by saying it and hanging up some signs doesn’t necessarily make it true. My question is: if Sandpoint is a walking town, then where are all the sidewalks? Sure there are some, but I still haven’t found one that doesn’t lead me into someone’s yard, or disappears altogether so that I’m left walking in the street. It’s crazy because some streets have sidewalks on both sides while others have none.

GOP: Stop complaining about Obama's agenda
Your newspaper keeps publishing letters from Republicans full of hate and venom toward President Obama.
State is thinking of our best interests?
I was interested to read the good news about the robust state of Idaho’s economy. So good, in fact, the Republican majority of the Idaho Legislature enacted a tax cut. The tax cut applies to corporations and the top 17 percent of earners in Idaho. Those guys really need help these days. They are not accumulating enough wealth.

Forum failed to offer meaningful coal facts
As an attendee at the “Coal Hard Truth” forum, I found it to be long on rhetoric and woefully short of facts. It failed to present any meaningful facts on the current traffic on the BNSF line west of Sandpoint or what the increase in traffic is projected to be if a coal export terminal is actually opened in Washington. It failed to mention the safety record of the railroads operating in the area for the past 100 years. It failed to discuss the chemical or moisture content of the coal, (.048 percent sulfur, .013 parts ppm mercury etc.), or that the moisture content is 27.6 percent. Is it possible that the 500 pounds loss per rail car in over the 600 mile route quoted by the Lake Pend Oreille Water Keepers is largely the evaporation of moisture in the coal and not a loss of coal dust?

A take on city hall
(More than 100 years ago the citizens of a small village had a vision. They realized that the expansion of the railroad, the timber and mining business, made growth a necessity if their village was to survive. Thankfully, these men and women were willing to give of their time and talents to make the place once called, “Hang Town” into a law-abiding place now called Sandpoint. They saw that this could only be done by having a city government with a place to meet and that is where our story begins.)

Be skeptical of unfair whisper campaign
I normally would not write a letter to the newspaper to report a rumor that is beginning to circulate around town, but in this case it is something that may be best brought to light early. What is being said is this: There people in the county planning to begin a whisper campaign against county Clerk Marie Scott questioning her honesty. These rumors will circulated just before the election when there will be little time to refute them..

Reporter went too far
In March’s “Progress Updates 2012” an article was printed about my sister Christine Lott. She went missing in 2004. I appreciate this reporter’s effort; however I was surprised to see that information had been printed about my sister’s past drug use as I did not think that would be relevant information for the general public.
GOP should capitalize on health care debate
The dispute over health care should be a win/win situation for Republicans. In the unlikely event the Supreme Court finds the law unconstitutional, Republicans can say, “We told you so.” If, on the other hand, the court rules the law is constitutional the GOP can run in November on the promise to repeal it; and, thereby, amass support from the majority of Americans who oppose the law.
Founding Fathers far from perfect
Too often the founding fathers are worshiped as near perfect men who had the best ideas that will always stand the test of time. Not only is this incorrect, it's very harmful to the progress of our country. The kicker is, I think they were smart enough to recognize that.

You add that to the five windshields that have been cracked in the past four years and it’s getting so I can’t afford to drive. My deductable is $500. What is it about Sandpoint?
