SANDPOINT — A Bonner County man convicted of initiating a shoot-out in which he was struck by gunfire was ordered Thursday to pay $10,000 in restitution to the victims.Richard Allen Larson was also ordered to pay Lora Adams’ hospital and car-rental bills, in addition to John Chester Bilsky’s medical bills, court documents indicate.

The May 22 annual meeting of the Bonner County Human Rights Task Force featured Tony Stewart, of the Kootenai County Task Force as speaker. He addressed the challenges of standing up for dignity and respect, speaking out against hate and supporting victims of bias and discrimination. He talked about examples of action over the last 30 years by the KCTF and in the last 20 years by the BCHRTF-standing up to the Aryan Nations, and other white supremacist groups.

State upholds sentencing in abuse case

SANDPOINT — The Idaho Court of Appeals is upholding the sentence handed to a North Idaho man accused of molesting a teenager while she slept. Austin Byron Courser was ordered to serve up to 15 years in prison after he pled guilty to an amended charge of sexual abuse of a minor. Courser has to serve at least five years of the sentence before he can qualify for parole.

It is unacceptable in this day and age that there is a cancer for which the relative five-year survival rate is still in the single digits at just six percent. It is particularly unacceptable when you consider that the overall five-year relative survival for all cancers is now 67 percent and the overall cancer incidence and death rates are declining, while the incidence and death rates for pancreatic cancer, the nation’s fourth leading cause of cancer-related death, are increasing. This situation cannot be allowed to continue.

On May 31, 17 teens from Bonner and Boundary counties received free preventive dental services at the Sandpoint Teen Dental Party. Panhandle Health District teamed up with the Sandpoint Teen Center for the event. In addition to dental services, kids who participated received a toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, sugar-free Tic-Tacs and Xylitol chewing gun that reduces the risk of tooth decay. They also took home quit-tobacco resources, information on tobacco’s impact on oral health and free sunscreen samples and information on skin cancer. A display showed teens the amounts of sugar and acid in common beverages.

In my limited understanding of the newspaper business, the most important stories are given priority by placing them above the fold of the paper so that the headline can be read when the newspaper is sitting in the newsstand. In that context, it would seem to me that “Clark Fork High School earns national recognition” would be given priority over “Council revamps meeting schedule.”
