Worked together or be kicked out of office
Tea party candidates were soundly defeated in the Republican primary in North Idaho. This in one of the most Republican states in the country. You can’t even get a Democrat elected as dog catcher in North Idaho.
Winkler's behavior not typical of area
As a 30-year Idaho resident and the state’s staff representative for equal rights advocacy organization Pride Foundation, I was saddened to read about Bonner County sheriff candidate Shaun Winkler’s cross-burning activities and affiliation with the Ku Klux Klan. His actions are offensive and discriminatory, and unacceptable in a potential law enforcement leader.
Eric Holder is worst AG in my lifetime
Upon attaining attorney general for this administration, the Department of Justice put three Navy SEALs on trial for punching a terrorist in the stomach during his capture (Ahmed Abed had previously killed, burned and hung the bodies of four Americans from a bridge in Iraq). Then came the inability to discern voter intimidation via Black Panthers (it’s intimidation whether by the KKK or the BP). There was a desire to try 9/11 mastermind KSM in New York City — the WTC memorial, museum and rebuilding will be completed before these “man-caused disasters” see justice. The DOJ filed suit against an Illinois school on behalf of teacher Safoorah Khan for religious discrimination, when after nine months on the job, she desired a three-week leave to visit Mecca and the school board nixed it. And, of course, suing the state of Arizona on immigration law, all the while ignoring the many “sanctuary cities.”

Who will respond to call for selfless action?
Since returning from Afghanistan I have a few thoughts to share on the perceived struggles of the modern American. I submit for your consideration that our nation is comprised of standing generations who have cut their teeth and proven their worth continually in the face of adversity. Tragedy has always preceded our triumph; failure has always come before our success.

Community features a 'foodie' culture
Living near Sandpoint I couldn’t relate to Michelle Obama when she spoke of food deserts. We have wonderful rich “foodie” culture here. Wonderful restaurants of which there are to many really good ones to mention, a farmers market, every grocery store has a little organic veggie section and two, count them, two stores dedicated to natural food, Truby’s and Winter Ridge. Myself, I grow about 4,000 square feet of organic garden. Many of us do have gardens here. And there are many small farmers around with wonderful food. Oh yeah, don’t forget our community garden. So relating to a food desert while living in a food paradise wasn’t easy.

Financial service business
A franchise business is a business in which the owners, or franchisers, sell the rights to their business logo and model to third parties, called franchisees. Franchises are an extremely common way of doing business. In fact, it's difficult to drive more than a few blocks in most cities without seeing a franchise business. Examples of well-known franchise business models include McDonalds, Subway, UPS, and H & R Block. In the United States, there are franchise business opportunities available across a wide variety of industries. To invest in a franchise, the franchisee must first pay an initial fee for the rights to the business, training, and the equipment required by that particular franchise. Thereafter, the franchisee will generally pay the franchise business owner an ongoing royalty payment, either on a monthly or quarterly basis. This payment is usually calculated as a percentage of the franchise operation’s gross sales. After the contract has been signed, the franchisee will open a replica of the franchise business, under the direction of the franchiser. The franchisee will not have as much control over the business as he or she would over their own, but may benefit from investing in an already-established brand.Generally, the franchiser will require that the business model stay the same. For example, the franchiser will require the franchisee to use the uniforms, business methods, and signs or logos particular to the business itself. The franchisee should remember that he or she is not just buying the right to sell the franchisers product, but is buying the right to use the successful and tested business process. The franchisee will also usually have to use the same or similar pricing, in order to keep the advertising streamlined. For example, if you saw an advertisement for $75 tax preparation from a well-known tax preparation franchise, you would expect to find this deal in any one of the franchise operations you went into. Aside from using the business model determined by the franchiser, the franchisee will otherwise remain an independent owner of the franchise. While there are many benefits to investing in an already-successful franchise business model, there are drawbacks as well. As with any investment you make, you should do your research thoroughly before you make any franchise purchasing decisions. If you are considering buying into a franchise, you should contact an experienced franchise attorney for further assistance..CitiWide

Home Based Business
A home business (or "home-based business" or "HBB") is a small business that operates from the business owner's home office. In addition to location, home businesses are usually defined by having a very small number of employees, usually all immediate family of the business owner, in which case it is also a family business. Home businesses generally lack shop frontage, customer parking and street advertising signs. Such businesses are sometimes prohibited by residential zoning regulations. The prospect of working from home has gained credibility over the years. Home offices can now compete with small commercial businesses and save on rent in the process. Faxes, high speed internet connections, dedicated home telephone lines, and cell phones help to make a home-based business a reality. Earlier home businesses had been where families lived on the second floor of their house while converting the first floor into a store, whereupon close of business they would secure the first floor and retire to the upper floors. This type of home business is still done in some rural areas. The concept of homebased business, as opposed to the previous terminology of "cottage industry", first appeared in 1978. The phrase was coined by Marion Behr, the originator of a study to find out what businesses women throughout America were carrying on in their homes. The preview edition of Enterprising Women wrote about the search to gather information pertaining to home workers throughout the nation. Numerous magazines and organizations helped to disseminate information regarding the study. Ultimately 40,000 letters were received, many indicating the problems the respondents experienced while carrying on businesses from their homes. The problems were analyzed and confronted in two ways. In 1980 the National Alliance of Homebased Businesswomen was founded to combat the isolation expressed by the respondents as well as to fight the laws which made conducting their businesses difficult. Then Women Working Home: The Homebased Guide and Directory by Marion Behr and Wendy Lazar was published. It contained the stories of many women who ran home-based businesses throughout the country in many diverse fields, as well as information on business formation, conduct and compliance with the law. It sold 50,000 copies. During this time many national magazines wrote about these issues. At the White House Conference on Small Business in 1986, one of the major resolutions was a recommendation favoring lifting restrictions on home-based business..CitiWide
Officials need to learn to play well with others
I have been watching with great interest the turmoil between the elected officials of Bonner County for just over a year. As a newcomer to North Idaho and Sandpoint, I don’t know all the issues, coalitions, alliances and friendships that have created this toxic atmosphere. However, as a recent escapee of the California governmental gulag, I can recognize a dysfunctional, ego-driven turf war being waged by bureaucrats who are not overly concerned with the best interests of the taxpayers they were elected to serve.

The Idaho Freedom Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit educational organization. The Idaho Freedom Foundation does not fund candidates or their opposition. IFF does not endorse candidates. We do not assist in the election or defeat of candidates for office.

Everyone is invited to human rights meeting
Although I typically do not condone publicizing the hateful antics of racist individuals or groups, in this case I applaud David Keyes’ decision to expose KKK member, Shaun Winkler. Mr. Winkler ran for the position of sheriff of Bonner County, an office which carries significant responsibilities. His credentials, qualifications, and philosophy should be revealed to voters who need to make informed decisions. If Mr. Winkler is burning crosses on his front yard, I surely want to know about it!

If there's no audience, then there is no play
I am trying to look at the recent events with understanding. If a card-carrying KKK member runs for sheriff, then this is an event that should and does receive national coverage with the press? Realistically, we all know, including the candidate, that there is no way that he will ever be elected and this is a stunt to get attention. And now his campaign continues to receive national press, which in turn makes Idaho appear to be a center of Aryan and white supremacist activity.

Just who benefits from poor schools?
I am sure a segment of our community really cares about the constitutional bona fides of every candidate for minor political office. And I am sure there is an overlap with the conspiracy-prone folks who feel President Barack Obama’s iron boot of oppression every time a game warden stops by to peek in the cooler for prohibited trout. But why do so few in our community choose to weigh in about the actual threat to the long-term viability of all rural Idaho communities?

A easy solution to the new overpass is to make it a truck-only road and make cars drive through the city as always.
Story, photograph had no place in newspaper
I was more than just a little offended at the article written by Cameron Rassmusson featuring Shaun Winkler. Running this story front page with a large color photo of a burning cross was a terrible decision and impacts our entire community. Our area already has a stigma for being racist, so why are we perpetuating it by running stories like this? I understand the importance of giving us a look into candidates lives but simply stating he is a member the Ku Klux Klan is sufficient to let me know not to vote for him. As always, Mr. Winkler is free to do what he wants on his own private property and I respect his First Amendment rights but that doesn’t mean he needs to be featured in a story.

“I was lucky. My buddy and I bought the entire upper portion of the Pack River basin from the feds last year. Beautiful place. I’m thinking of putting in a little landing pad and a cabin up by Harrison Lake where we can kick back, have a few beers and do some fishing on Harrison and those other dinky lakes I bought. Of course we will have to lock the gate on the road, put up some fences. No horses, no hiking, no snowmobiles, no hunting or fishing, that kind of thing. Disturbs our peace. You’ll understand of course, it’s private property now. Better than the feds still owning it.”

Consider all issues when going to vote
Before going to the polls, know your candidates’ positions on the following natural resource issues:
Be careful what you wish for
With all the local and state challengers this year I wonder if the electorate is paying attention to what has just happened in Greece and France. It seems to me some protest is OK but when everyone jumps ship as they have over there, what do you have, chaos and perhaps a financial meltdown. Be careful what you wish for.

Kelly will make a great commissioner
We are fortunate to have an excellent choice for commissioner, District 3, Cary Kelly.
Judge candidates on property rights views
One issue that features prominently in the public debate leading up to the primary election for county offices is protection of private property rights. Several years ago, before I made my escape from New Jersey, that state passed the Highlands Act, which prohibited virtually all development within a huge swathe of the rural northwestern part of the state. Land became almost worthless overnight.
Eskridge deserves continuing support
I have read several comments that were in a mailing flyer I received from George Eskridge’s primary opponent. They require comment.

In these challenging times, the residents of this great county need not just good leadership but great leadership. Cary Kelly is the man who will provide that great leadership.
Cornel Rasor working to help all residents
Cornel Rasor is one citizen who, instead of sitting on his hands and hoping that someone else would do the work for him, and instead of trusting the federal government to do the right thing, is “… attending to the local issues … “ of Bonner County by peacefully opposing the incursions of those overreaching agencies.

Broadsword deserves your vote, support
Joyce Broadsword has worked hard as a state senator, not just for north Idaho but for the entire state. She has been in a tremendous amount of time and effort into maintaining our way of life in North Idaho. I know she will put forth the same dedication into our county as a commissioner. Joyce believes in providing economic development, bringing in good jobs, maintaining good roads and having a reasonable and responsible tax policy.
Rasor looking out for the county's citizens
Recent letters have faulted incumbent Cornel Rasor for his actions to protect individual property rights from federal overreach applauding incumbent Lewis Rich and opposing candidate Joyce Broadsword for their disdain of the subject. Few citizens are equipped to take on the federal government; all of us should be thankful for Rasor’s grit.

The citizens of Bonner County deserve an intelligent, hardworking, common sense leader. Joyce Broadsword is such a leader and deserves our vote for county commissioner.

SANDPOINT — It’s unlikely that any other Bonner County sheriff candidate spent their Friday night like Shaun Winkler.
Hospital pays tribute to many loyal employees
“It may seem a strange principle to enunciate as the very first requirement in a hospital that it should do the sick no harm.”

Conservatives are not obstructionists
Lately, the news has been telling us how the conservatives are obstructionists. But think about it, hasn’t the country been constantly “progressing” left? So who is it that’s really been doing the most compromising? Who is it that has been the least compromising? Please take the time to sit, relax with some cookies, and actually read the Constitution. Consider whether it promotes personal responsibility, a desire to excel, and has inspired some of the world’s greatest accomplishments. Then consider whether government intrusion not only promotes, but financially rewards mediocrity. Is it time to draw a line in the sand that we will not cross? Is it time we really become obstructionists to save the greatest country man has ever produced?
Lewis Rich delivers unwavering leadership
In the last election, most of the voters chose Lewis Rich for county commissioner in District 3 and I am glad they did so. Commissioner Rich has been honest and completely transparent for the six years he has served Bonner County. Fortunately for us, he does not shrink back from hard choices. Lewis has answered every question he has been asked as our commissioner, even if the answer was hard to give.

Similar name creates election confusion
Can you believe that in an area as small as Bonner County there are two women named Barbara Buchanan? Actually she is known as Barbee and my nickname is Babs. Usually I am happy when people think we are the same person as Barbee Buchanan is very talented and community involved. I recently got a kudos card from my insurance agent when she was featured in the Bee for her work with Kinderhaven and CASA. We go to the same eye doctor, dry cleaner and florist and sometimes get each other’s bills, dry cleaning and appointment reminders.

Let's move forward instead of backward
This spring’s election affords us an opportunity to clean up the mess in our county. As a past commissioner and active homeowner, I know most all of those running both as challengers and incumbents and having worked with them as partners or antagonists.
Voters shouldn't reward incumbent insouciance
As a relative newcomer to North Idaho, I do not know the conscience of our elected officials. Do they really support the elimination of the 17th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution — and thereby the elimination of the citizens’ right to vote for their senators? Do they place more faith in the U.S. Constitution than in the Bible?

One can clearly see that if the position of sheriff was appointed by a human resource board rather than an election, Daryl Wheeler would obviously be the qualified choice.

Kelly is the smart, informed option
The informed and smart vote on May 15 is for Cary Kelly — District 3, county commissioner. I can attest first-hand to Mr. Kelly’s diplomatic and sensible approach to problem solving and his seasoned skills as a leader, manager, decision maker and organizer.
Joyce Broadsword is the smart choice
If you believe Bonner County Commissioners should spend time, and tax dollars, hiring lawyers and mediators because they cannot talk civilly to each other; if you think the commissioners have to continually do battle with the other county officials; if you want your county commissioners to focus on fighting federal and state programs instead of attending to local issues; then by all means vote to retain the current District 1 commissioner.
Rich is sensible conservative
I am voting for Lewis Rich for Bonner County commissioner because he is a sensible conservative.

Elect Broadsword to commission seat
I’m voting for Joyce Broadsword for county commissioner in District 1 because she has the common sense approach to our problems in Bonner County. It is not common sense to raise taxes during hard times, which is exactly what has been done by Cornel Rasor. Joyce Broadsword voted to lower our taxes in the Idaho Senate and we can expect that she will carry that sensibility to the county commission.
