SANDPOINT — Even though he didn’t win a state title, Sam Levora had one of the strongest track and field seasons in Sandpoint history, so it came as little surprise when he won the top award at the SHS track banquet recently. Collectively, all our voices will be heard
Abuse of animals is abhorrent to almost all of us. Were we to learn of horses or dogs having been viciously kicked in the face, stomped upon, beaten with sticks, or dragged by chains pulled taut around the neck, we would scream in protest. In 2012, video recordings were made of just such abuse of dairy cows at the Bettencourt Dairies in southern Idaho. The response of Idaho’s $2.5 billion dairy industry was to lobby for legislation that criminally penalizes those who would record and report such abuse. Idaho Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter signed this legislation — the “Ag Gag bill” — into law in February. Fines and jail time now faced by such whistleblowers in Idaho exceed those of the abuser.

Judges' rulings will never be right
Well, a predictable event has accrued, another black-robed judge has ruled that same-sex marriage is legal, but this time it is in Idaho. SANDPOINT — Time-honored as books and blackboards might be, a trip to the watershed for lessons in water quality and ecology can make a far greater impact on many students.
Why can't we just get along with each other?
Our/their/my community recently used a public park to host an annual Lion’s Easter egg hunt. About a month before, this community was polarized by an out-of-state religious freedoms group filing a lawsuit that a longstanding, beautiful, granite monument (that happened to be etched with the Ten Commandments) be removed from a town park. It became in-state versus out-of-state, Christians versus atheists and brother versus sister; etc. Terrible name calling, all in front of “our” children playing side by side with each other not knowing they were different from each other — yet.
Idaho's health exchange - right, from the start

Incumbents are a disappointment

Snedden has history of helping others
Stephen Snedden has been involved in this community for years as a volunteer, an attorney and as a local councilman.
Sage Dixon is an honorable man
I am asking for your support for Sage Dixon. Sage is an honorable man whose knowledge of our federal and state constitutions and the issues facing Idaho will enable him to truly represent North Idahoans.
All incumbents must be sent home
One more week and the primary will be here. I sincerely hope that the polls will be overrun with citizens next week clamoring to cast their ballots. How terrific would it be to learn that the majority of registered voters cast their ballots instead of the token 20 percent of past elections?
Don't buy claims of the incumbents
Once again, huge amounts of money are being spent to influence our election. The incumbents at all levels have the ability to outspend the challengers. Please use some common sense and vote for new faces in this election in all state positions.
There's no one better than Phillips
I’d like to throw my opinion out there regarding the upcoming commissioner’s race. In my opinion, there can be no better candidate than Marcia Phillips for the position.
Candidates' actions speak volumes
After closely watching this primary campaign season I must give a round of applause to candidates Victoria Zeischegg, Heather Scott, Sage Dixon and Danielle Ahrens.

SANDPOINT — A preliminary hearing has been reset for an Idaho State Police trooper accused of felony theft and fraud in Bonner County.
Support Snedden, Keough, Eskridge
Good schools are the foundation of building a strong, local economy with better-paying jobs.
Incumbents' votes speak loud, clear
Words, words, words. I’ve received more expensive glossy flyers in the mail declaring how conservative the incumbents and their new buddy are. I don’t want words, I want action and looking at the incumbents’ voting record, I strongly question the incumbents’ conservative claims.
Support real change, vote for Democrats
Idaho’s primary election is May 20.
Dixon will do what's right for our state
Sage Dixon has my vote. Sage and his wife Veronica are incredible role models for our community in every way: how they raise their children, their high moral standards, their love for God, their involvement in their community and their genuine concern for our future.
All three Wampus Cats win matches at state tennis
CALDWELL — Unlike most sports, there is no 1A state tennis tournament, only a combined 3A/2A/1A draw, so it’s a tough go for a small school like Clark Fork.
Snedden is best choice for seat
I’ve known Stephen Snedden for years and I have no doubt that he is the best person to be our next state representative for Bonner and Boundary counties.
Letter filled with falsehoods, lies
A response to J. Johnson regarding the trash talking of Marcia Phillips:
Stephen Snedden is a proven leader
Jobs and education are the two most important issues our community faces. Only one candidate for state representative has consistently talked about how to create more, better-paying jobs and strengthen our local schools: Republican Stephen Snedden.
Incumbents offer proven leadership
There is an old saying — “Those who can do, do do.” George Eskridge and Shawn Keough can do and have done.
It's hard to believe Snedden's claims
A political action committee calling itself “Sportsmen for Idaho” has recently been paying for radio ads and large, glossy campaign literature for Stephen Snedden. When asked at a forum on May 13 what he knows about this PAC, Snedden said he’s “never heard of it.”
Scott will represent area not outsiders
A rule of thumb for choosing a candidate who will serve the interests of Bonner County residents versus corporate interests is to witness the barrage of mail received from well-funded candidates who receive campaign contributions from outside the district they are or will be serving versus grassroots campaigns like Heather Scott’s campaign for District 1A, House of Representatives.
Incumbents aren't real conservatives
I am concerned about how the incumbent team for District 1 state legislators is defining themselves as “conservative Republicans.” Just because someone views themselves in a certain way, does not make it true. Their use of “conservative” seems to be quite a misnomer, based on their voting records and professed positions on issues.
Hillman is the best choice for Dist. 7
I am writing this letter in support of Shauna Hillman for Idaho state representative in District 7.
Primary will decide North Idaho's future
The May 20 Republican primary is a very important election. North Idaho’s future will be decided.
It is a time for change in area
It is time for a change in Bonner and Boundary counties. We can vote for establishment Republicans and continue down the path of more government regulation such as Ottercare and Common Core or we can vote for those who would stand strong for our individual rights.

Scott's expertise needed with lake
Infestations of invasive species and milfoil continue to be a threat to the beautiful waters of Lake Pend Oreille and its surrounding watershed.
Bailey, Sudick are common sense vote
Glen Bailey and Todd Sudick impress me with their honest and reasonable conservative values. Both candidates have served Bonner County well, without rancor and have calmed that landscape.
Heather Scott is a true conservative
Heather Scott is a true conservative dynamo who believes in getting legal title to the 62 percent of state lands that the federal government currently owns.
Zeischegg is no friend to veterans
Victoria’s Zeishegg’s disparaging views toward veterans, via her endorser(s), have already alienated most veterans, who apparently, make up a significant portion of the Bonner County electorate.
Scott has the moral courage we need
Ronald Reagan once said, “There are no easy answers, but there are simple answers. We must have the courage to do what we know is morally right.”

The school supplemental levy vote is May 20. There are so many things that needs to be addressed, but due to space and time I am only going to cover a couple of things. If you did not read Chris and Diane Oldham’s letter (May 8, Daily Bee) read it.

SANDPOINT — The Bonner Community Food Center certainly has a friend in the Sandpoint High School Interact Club.
Make voice heard on WBCSD levy
What does social justice mean to you? This is important, because children in our schools are being taught that it means a more equitable classroom. This type of thinking has a hidden agenda and is the beginning stages of socialism/communism. A more accurate definition is, forced redistribution of wealth with resentment toward higher achievers, under the demand for equal outcome.
Lack of fairness was inappropriate
Keith Kinnaird should be “ …fair and comprehensive” and “… avoid stereotyping” and his “… analysis and commentary should be labeled.” (Professional Journalists’ Code of Ethics). To label Heather Scott, Sage Dixon and Danielle Ahrens as “ultra-conservative candidates …” displays a lack of fairness and does not “…avoid stereotyping…” but instead presents a bias against those candidates and a lean toward the other candidates he does not label.
Scott has the drive to do what's right for us
I am writing to send my heartfelt endorsement for Heather Scott for District 1A representative for Idaho. I also know intellectually Heather is the very best candidate for this office and at a much needed time in North Idaho’s history in politics.
Levy is a luxury we can do without
I am tired of our school district repeatedly taxing the people of our community. The state allocation of monies for the Priest River schools is gained from state income taxes, which every person has to pay. Adding this new levy tax, will cause us to be double taxed. Why should a levy that only taxes the property owner be allowed, and not have everyone share, if additional monies are used?
Man stuck with felony conviction
SANDPOINT — The Idaho Court of Appeals is declining to paper over a felony conviction against a man who attacked his girlfriend in Bonner County in 2009.
Inflammatory letter grossly inaccurate
Mr. Perry’s inflammatory letter (May 8, Daily Bee), is grossly inaccurate. While it is true that Mr. Snedden has been a tireless advocate for the Pend d’Oreille Bay Trail, I have been on the board of the Friends of the Pend d’Oreille Bay Trail since 2011 and at no time during Mr. Snedden’s term on the Sandpoint City Council was he a member of our board. As a result, there was no conflict of interest with Mr. Snedden voting in favor of Sandpoint purchasing a portion of the property comprising the trail.
Don't reinvent the wheel, pick Bailey
Glen Bailey for county commissioner yes; Marcia Phillips no.
Alamillo gunning for third state title
SANDPOINT — Regardless of what happens at state this weekend, it’s been a stellar career for Sandpoint senior Nikole Alamillo, the reigning two-time 4A state champion in the discus.
Vote for Fioravanti for state senate seat
Do you really feel you have been properly represented in Boise for the last 18 years? Christian is a candidate who is not beholden to special interests. He cares about you, the people.
Vote for a real change in District 1 leadership
Let’s use a metaphor. The political and regulatory problems we have are like sores or wounds. Over the years, our politicians have put bandages (lots of money and lots of rules) over the wounds. But the wounds have now festered causing additional infections. So our politicians put on more bandages (money and regulations).
Snedden isn't the right pick to represent us
I attended the recent Clark Fork candidate forum. I was hoping to get a better understanding of the candidates. What I got instead was an eye opener.

Todd Sudick has a proven track record

Some are liberals and some conservatives

He is also available by phone and email. I looked, I tried, there is no blog. There is no Facebook page. The phone number is not on the postcard and the email address is not.

Levy needed to keep our kids competitive
There seems to be a lot of people, not just locally, but in the whole state, that think school taxes have gotten out of control. We understand the frustration of more and more tax dollars being taken out of our paychecks, and nothing new to show for it. School taxes are not one of the things that fall into that category, not when the price of everything continues to go up.

We need to support our kids, schools
In response to several opinion letters on the levy, I’d like to say; “Have you looked at your tax bill?” Some say they have been stretched again and again because of school levies over the years. Do you know how much you pay in actual levy fees? If you looked at your tax statement you would see that the other line items take up 80 percent or more of your tax dollars, not the schools. As far as the majority ruling, that is not a true statement. In fact, the majority of voters did not even turn out to vote on the previous levy proposal. The majority have not spoken.
