Campaign needs to clarify foreign policy
The current political campaign needs to clarify our foreign policy. Since World War II, we appear to be in an expensive losing game of fear of using our military power.
Solutions will follow a respectful conversation
I am constantly amazed by the richness of our community, both its environment and the people who inhabit this environment. Differing opinions can immediately give way to a common effort to help those in need. Opposite perspectives can join forces to make an impact in caring for a sick neighbor, a terminally ill child, a family who is homeless and much more.
Was Idaho a state in the Civil War?
I’ve read several publications and their coverage of Idaho Rep. Heather Scott, R-Blanchard, and her now infamous photo posing with the Confederate flag. I’ve also read comments from both sides of the political spectrum — some saying she has the right to display the flag, some arguing that it’s racist, etc.

They get more profits, and we get – without any choice – more noise, more toxic coal dust, more waits at railroad crossings, and more chances for a catastrophic oil spill.

City doesn't need an administrator
In his editorial on the proposed Sandpoint city administrator position, Jim McKiernan voices his support based on a remarkably undiscerning analysis of city officials’ talking points, with only a “pretty please, let us in on the hiring process” caveat. We expect better from a publisher.
Sandpoint doesn't need city administrator
When the subject of a city administrator was discussed by the Sandpoint City Council in July their claim was perfectly clear: an amount would be reduced from the budget of each department that would fund the expense of this new position. The justification was that the administrator would bring an increased efficiency that would result in an across-the-board cost savings so that each department’s overall budget would be cost-neutral.

Administrator process needs public input
This is the second editorial on the prospects of Sandpoint hiring a city administrator. I totally agree that it’s a good idea simply because it creates continuity between elected officials as they enter office and leave office. It’s the one person who will have the responsibility to make sure that policy and procedure is implemented for the city and a person who can keep budget requests in line with the goals of a council and mayor. It’s time.

'Silent crossings' should be considered
It is my understanding that it is the Federal Railway Administration that requires locomotive engineers to warn the world that they are approaching a grade crossing by sounding a horn. If the crossing is occupied by a train on an adjacent track the signal still has to be made.

Very few coal and dust containments were found near and next to the tracks; that was the end of that study and worries. The worst pollutants were wood burning and vehicles.
