You're right, police are to blame for violence
I am writing this in hopes that you will share with other who I undoubtedly owe an apology. I admit I am old, set in my ways and repeatedly have defended the actions of the police across the country, I was wrong and what I saw on TV today convinced me that the “police” are the common denominator in all the violence that has taken place across the country.

Are Common Core, relativism connected?
Does Common Core have an insidious element of relativism in it, or an element that could lead to relativism? When I first heard about it, that is the first thing that came to my mind, and the more I learned, the more I questioned. Something to think about.

And, she’s right. The word is that because of our extremely mild winter, we just may have a very buggy warm-weather year.

THANKFUL
Scott underappreciated for her integrity, ability
There’s something very wrong with SB 1067 child support legislation. Common sense indicates that if the government was truly interested in assisting children, it would be a simple process in providing the state of Idaho access to the database and procedure in collecting monies from deadbeat parents.
Another law for the children unnecessary
Taryn Thompson, ex-Hagadone News Network reporter, pictured with her husband and ex-husband on April 15, received a lot of ink regarding her comments which she and Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter seemed to demand enactment. Thompson and Otter offer little information regarding the legislation. Otter stated, “Health officials have given the state a June 12 deadline to remedy the noncompliance.” Health officials pass laws? What treaties and what countries involved? If this is a U.N. affair, Sharia law is a major concern.

Overpopulation is a growing problem
Every day, 340,000 humans are born on this planet; 10,800 of them here in the U.S. that’s daily, folks. My question is, why do we continue to freely reproduce when our species already overpopulates this planet?

Authorities could be more transparent
I so much appreciated your report of May 15, Lee Hughes, regarding the Farmin-Stidwell lockdown, presented from the parents’ point of view. I’m no journalist, but I thought it was excellent. Even though my kids are grown, and none of my grandkids go to school there, I empathized with these parents.

Community's support is a true blessing
I was recently honored and blessed beyond any, and all, expectations by a sell-out audience at the beautiful Panida Theater, and the remarkable performances of a selection of my songs by so many talented friends.
Concert was one of the best shows ever
I am so happy that I attended the recent packed show at the Panida honoring Charley Packard. What an line-up of talented musicians. It was one of the best shows I have experienced here in Sandpoint, and this town knows how to celebrate good music. Every song performed was one authored by Mr. Packard, and it seemed each performer did his or her best to honor the song.

Education is key to safe biking for all
Now that it’s May and National Bike Month, I was looking forward to riding my old Schwin, until an unrelated injury grounded me. So I’m on foot for now. Which is why I was stepping out on the sidewalk on Saturday morning to go to the first Farmers Market of the season. I had parked behind a building on Church Street across from the post office to take advantage of a shady parking spot, so I accessed the sidewalk a ways from the crosswalk alongside the building. I never imagined I should look both ways first!
Molander, Lewis will lead district wisely
I’m now in my tenth year as a Lake Pend Oreille School Board trustee with the last three as board chair. I had the good fortune joining the board at a time when things were turning around and we were heading in a positive direction. We are now one of the top performing districts in the state. The list of accomplishments in the district is long. It wasn’t always like that.

SANDPOINT — Over 300 students from across North Idaho infiltrated the shady woods and sunny meadows near Careywood Thursday for the 33rd annual Idaho State Forestry Contest.
Rose, Cleveland are best candidates
The office of Lake Pend Oreille School Board trustee, although unpaid, is one of the most important positions in the county. I am not a resident of Zone 1 or Zone 4, but the composition of the school board affects all residents of Bonner County. On May 19 residents living in Zone 1 and Zone 4 have the chance to vote for positive change in the Lake Pend Oreille School District.

Molander, Lewis are a vote for quality education
School board elections traditionally have a low turnout, so every vote counts. Vote on May 19 as if your children or grandchildren’s future depends on it, because it does.
Common Core is hurting our students
As the mother of young children, I’m dismayed at what teaching Common Core in our school district is doing to our children’s education. What I’m seeing is that basic math problems are required to be solved in such a twisted and difficult way that kids are having a really difficult time trying to solve them. So, after a long day at work, my husband or I need to spend at least an hour helping our child, who is an otherwise excellent student, struggle through these ordinary math problems. This is so unnecessary.
Festival concerts shine bright with star-studded lineup
SANDPOINT — Eclectic? Check. Fun? Check Progressive? Check
Pair will ask the tough questions
At a time when the federal government’s tentacles are reaching into local education through mandated testing (SBAC and ISAT), we need people on the school board who question, not rubber stamp issues such as this that are brought to them for approval.
Common Core is damaging education
Common Core threatens school choice and parental and teacher participation in education. Its implementation is ballooning curriculum adoption costs from $6,600 (2015/16) to $198,000 (2016/2017) (as per Lake Pend Oreille School District budget online). Data collection, weeks of testing and denial of access to test scores by parents and teachers are only a few of the reasons why I will not support any pro-Common Core school board candidates and why I enthusiastically support Kathy Rose and Tom Cleveland.
Is school board a closed club?
Watching Lake Pend Oreille School District’s actions makes me curious. Why is the school board chairman campaigning for a man who didn’t want to run again? Is this an effort to keep only select people in place? Only the politically correct allowed?
Garden plants seeds for learning
SANDPOINT — A light rain, dirt and kids — all the ingredients necessary for a good time and an ongoing learning opportunity.
Cleveland, Rose offer a fresh perspective
I agree with Tom Clark’s letter (May 12, Daily Bee) about needing new blood on the school board. As the enrollment in the Lake Pend Oreille School Board continues to decline, it seems to be logical to make some course corrections.
Cleveland will be change to LPOSD
In Zone 4 of LPOSD, Geraldine Lewis is running for the position held by retiring trustee Mindy Cameron. Ms. Lewis is touted by some on the school board as the perfect candidate to replace Ms. Cameron. This is understandable because she holds the same pro-levy-at-any-cost and Common-Core-or-bust attitude. She will continue the status quo on this board.

LPOSD in need of fresh blood
The Lake Pend Oreille School District No. 84 is in dire need of fresh blood on the board of directors. Any organization that has unanimity of thought or fears dissenting opinion is ripe for decay. District 84 is reflecting the decay much as our two-party system of politics keeps offering up the same backroom wheelers and dealers like Rep. John Boehner, Sen. Mitch McConnell, Sen. Harry Reid and Rep. Nancy Pelosi.

Let's keep Molander on the school board
Like our lake and our library, the Lake Pend Orielle School District is extraordinary. People we respect, say school board trustee Joel Molander has done much to make it so. Let’s keep him on the job.
Trust and responsibility are issues to consider
Lake Pend Oreille is a consolidated school district with the responsibility for all schools and students large or small. We, the voting public, taxpayers, parents, students and staff at Clark Fork and the greater community have put our trust in the Steve Youngdahl-lead school board.

Bonner County schools were good when my children attended many years ago. Now they are even better, giving us one of the top school districts in Idaho.
Lewis, Molander are right people for board
We stand firmly in support of Geraldine Lewis and Joel Molander for school district trustees. Although I do not live in the districts currently voting, I have a stake in the outcome. A viable and well-functioning school board is united toward the goal of student achievement.
Lewis, Molander are best picks for board
A reminder: school board elections are important.
Area well represented by Joel Molander
I am beginning my 12th year as a trustee on the Lake Pend Oreille Board. I have seen many changes and challenges in the education of our children. Joel’s quiet ability to listen, reflect and guide decisions that affect the children within our district has been appreciated by all of us.

Molander best pick for school board trustee

Lewis dedicated to LPOSD's students
Geraldine Lewis is the right candidate for Lake Pend Oreille School Board, Zone 4, in the upcoming LPOSD school board election on May 19. She has been an active volunteer for the schools, in the classroom, and with five years on the staff of Panhandle Alliance for Education — which provides financial support to the school district for far-sighted educational programs, and with CARE— a recognition program for students at Sandpoint High School.

Make the election about the children
The tone of this school board election after a successful levy campaign is appalling. There are no parties involved here, just kids who need the best advocates Zones 1 and 4 can offer. When school meal programs are cut from Zone 1 … when we only hear of teacher cuts being made and no word of deep cuts at the district level, something is wrong. If proponents of Molander and Lewis have to resort to putting non-Zone 1 or non-Zone 4 persons up to slandering intelligent, involved, and well-meaning candidates for zones 1 and 4, this school district administration is afraid of change. Most of us can read between the lines; the children deserve better.

'Small schools' deserve district's support
It is difficult to stand by and watch the tremendous work and dedication put forth by students, staff and school administration appear to be easily dismissed with a comment, “I’ve been given my marching orders.” And another comment “But it’s the small rural schools’ turn,” Woodward said. “Clark Fork has been spared from staffing adjustments that other schools in the district have experienced.” I could spend time and very little effort responding to “it’s the small schools turn.”
