U.S. has moral obligation to accept the refugees
Most of us feel disgust for the professional politician’s well-known expertise at spreading fear. Whether it be WMD in Iraq, ebola in Africa, bird flu in Asia, prisoners at Gitmo, terrorists on the streets of Paris, a drop in the NYSE, or the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, their response is predictable: fear. Surely, for them, when their own security is at stake, the answer is never “deal with it” but to run, hide, take cover, isolate themselves from the scourge and from anything that could harm them. “No, no, we can’t bring the troops out ‘cause the terrorist will follow them home.”

Sidewalks are another disconnect with city
Concerning the article on the front page of the Nov. 6 Bee about the city charging a property owner $16,000 to put a sidewalk on his property. This is a prime example of the disconnect between the city and people’s everyday lives — and a good forecast of what likely to expect from our new mayor. Even with labor, in what reality does 50-foot or 75-foot by 4-foot area of concrete cost $16,000? This could buy a late-model, low-mileage used car.
Residents could share cost to challenge city
The city of Sandpoint is forcing property owners to repair sidewalks at the property owners expense because an Idaho statute allows the city to do so. That Idaho Statute has never been challenged. Based on my experience, the statute is plainly illegal. In a nutshell, a sidewalk is a public improvement. When public improvements benefit the entire public, then the entire public pays. That is what taxes are for.

Kokanee's success benefits everyone
Idaho’s biggest lake presented Idaho Fish and Game with one of its biggest fisheries challenges. How do you manage diverse fish populations in a lake that covers 134 square miles? How do you target a certain fish species in a lake so deep it is used to test submarines? How do you eliminate a bunch of big fish and replace them with small ones, and make anglers happy about it? Add to the mix an endangered species, a tiny crustacean and a world-class fishery at stake, and you have a management challenge akin to tight-rope walking on roller skates.

Halt the sidewalk fascism in the city

Let delegation know that wilderness is a bad idea
A reality check is needed for the proposed Scotchman Wilderness. We are constantly told it must be protected, yet we are not told from what. As a result, the peak has become a goat petting zoo and the trail to the namesake peak, closed.
