Community's support, kindness appreciated
I just wanted to take a moment to thank the entire Sandpoint community for all the goodwill, love, and kindness my kids and I have received since their father died tragically last month.
Rognstad has ability to move us forward
Sandpoint is the hub from where I shop, bank and socialize, it has grown and flourished in the past 10 years. One of its greatest assets is its diversity, we are an eclectic community all living in a peaceful environment.
Pledge of Allegiance flap is a non-issue
Growing up in the 1950s in a very patriotic community, I can’t recall ever seeing someone hold their hand over their heart when pledging allegiance to the flag, or singing the National Anthem, or at the appearance of Old Glory. Nor did I see any American flag lapel pins. The hand over your heart and the lapel pin trend started sometime after 9/11. Once it started anyone not holding their hand over their heart or wearing a pin had his patriotism questioned, so most public figures acquiesced — including President Obama. I didn’t vote for him either time and can’t wait until he’s gone, but the lapel pin flap was a non-issue in my opinion.
Streeteries on hold in Sandpoint
SANDPOINT — Streeteries may have a future in Sandpoint but the City Council wants more involvement from downtown businesses before agreeing to allow them to take over parking spaces in downtown Sandpoint. The council will discuss the issue at a future meeting.
We don't need lackey of outgoing mayor
Mr. Rognstad’s recent letter seems to accuse all of Mr. Dunkel’s supporters of being hate-mongers. If I wasn’t going to vote against him before I would now.
Rognstad is dedicated to Sandpoint's future
I have known Shelby Rognstad only in his role as a Sandpoint City Council member and president. During the past year, I have had the opportunity to work with him in the planning phase of the Watershed Crest Trail, an epic 25-mile loop trail located primarily on Sandpoint property near town.
Rognstad understands the issues facing city
Pledgegate has taken over the mayoral campaign. That Shelby Rognstad doesn’t cover his heart during the Pledge of Allegiance is pure evidence that he hates America. Actually, I don’t cover my heart either.
Attack ads resurface in mayor's race
SANDPOINT — Another round of racially-charged ads attacking Sandpoint mayoral candidate Shelby Rognstad is lighting up local phone lines.
Shelby's vision will benefit more people
Why would I, a classic liberal, vote for Shelby, a self-avowed progressive?
Commissioners OK EMS fee hikes
SANDPOINT — Bonner County commissioners voted unanimously on Thursday to update its EMS fee schedule amid gales of objections from the public.
Bulldog harriers primed for state cross country
SANDPOINT — These three words appear on the bottom of the Sandpoint cross country team’s T-shirt logo: Rise as One.
Vote for Mose Dunkel, and Memorial Field
I am voting for Mose Dunkel for mayor. I am voting in favor of the restoring Barlow Stadium.
We need a mayor with creative ideas, integrity
After reading the candidates’ two letters recently, I noted the difference in tones.
We need to ensure field remains a gem
To those who have never experienced the thrill of walking on to your home field for a Friday night football game, or a Thursday night soccer match with the grandstands filled and everyone screaming at each touchdown or goal, I speak to you. Or the Festival concertgoer, or the high school graduate, I speak to you.

Criticism is weak attempt to discredit Rognstad
Criticism of Shelby Rognstad for the way he said the Pledge of Allegiance at a forum is unwarranted and is another weak attempt to discredit him in the mayor’s contest.
Candidate forum draws big crowd
SANDPOINT — About 75 people joined Sandpoint mayoral candidates Shelby Rognstad and Mose Dunkel for a candidate forum Wednesday evening.
Five Bulldogs garner 4A All-IEL girls soccer honors
SANDPOINT — Senior defender Madi Schoening was named Most Valuable Player, part of a strong showing of Bulldogs on the 4A All-Inland Empire League girls soccer team, as voted on recently by the league’s coaches.

Shelby is the right choice as Sandpoint mayor
Shelby Rognstad, a fourth-generation Idahoan, has a proven track record in local government and business. He has a clear plan for Sandpoint and has been focused on core issues for Sandpoint including: the economy, the environment, and education.
Rognstad is the best choice for Sandpoint
In making our decision for mayor, we are considering experience, ability to analyze data and come to conclusions, and an understanding of where Sandpoint has been and where it is going. Our unequivocal vote is for Shelby Rognstad.
Man accused of witness intimidation
SANDPOINT — An Oldtown man was arrested for allegedly intimidating a witness in a theft investigation, court records show.
Vote for Shelby for Sandpoint mayor
Shelby is clearly the best choice for Sandpoint mayor. He has the experience and dedication to handle this difficult job.
Experience counts, vote for Rognstad
I wonder why people believe there are advantages to electing a person with no experience in city government. How can they have any knowledge about how government works and be prepared to handle the job? How can we judge their interest, if they have not been engaged in service to the city?
Keep Sandpoint moving forward, vote for Shelby
With all the fuss over the phone “robocalls” attacking mayoral candidate Shelby Rognstad, it seems people are missing the point that candidate Mose Dunkel was defending the confederate flag on Facebook prior to the shootings at the church in Charleston last summer.
Rognstad committed to economic growth
Shelby Rognstad is the right choice for Sandpoint. Our next mayor will influence the quality of life in Sandpoint, and Shelby has necessary experience to keep Sandpoint moving forward.
Thank you, Sandpoint, for supporting an average guy
Thank you, Sandpoint, for allowing a average guy the chance to run for mayor. The overwhelming support I have received is humbling and it has truly helped me to stay focused and positive.

(NAPSI)—If you own, run or work for any of the approximately 23 million small- to mid-sized businesses in America, chances are, you want more sales. So, how do you make it happen? Former mayor among those seeking post
SANDPOINT — Arlene Fisher-Maurer and David Sawyer are among the five finalists interviewed for the city administrator position is Sandpoint.
Have a wonderful Reformation Day
For those interested in a positive focus on Oct. 31, rather than a briefly amusing and unsatisfying occult downgrade, I would suggest considering Reformation Day. Reformation Day has been commemorated for centuries.
We have no business building new stadium
Sandpointians, we are afflicted by the fiscal insanity now commonplace in our country. We do not reside within a tech rich economy like Seattle or Silicon Valley. Instead, we are a small Idaho town, in a small Idaho county, one that just lost its largest private employer. Given that the five largest employers are government or quasi-government entities, we must operate with the utmost fiscal prudence or risk mounting financial obligations that will grow evermore challenging.
Vandals suspend troubled wide receiver Epps
MOSCOW — Idaho star wide receiver Dezmon Epps has been suspended indefinitely after he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend late Saturday night, according to a source.
Skeyes the Limit named top business
SANDPOINT — The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce has named Skeyes the Limit Catering as its Business of the Month for October.
Keep our teams playing at field
I would like to add my words to those of Robert Barlow regarding the tax levy for the replacement of the bleachers at Barlow Stadium. As one of the hundreds of kids who have grown up playing football on that field and for the hundreds coming along behind, it’s vitally important that we continue having that field in Sandpoint.
Diabetes Day Pit Stop planned for Monday
I’m willing to bet that not one of you woke up this morning and said to yourself, “Sure hope I get diabetes today.” I am also willing to bet that several of you woke up this morning and said to yourself, “Sure hope these symptoms I’m having don’t mean I have diabetes.”
Clear choice in race for Sandpoint mayor
The Sandpoint mayoral election gives us a clear choice.
County seeks EMS rate hike
SANDPOINT — Bonner County is seeking to raise EMS fees for the first time since the system was formed a decade ago.
Vote Rognstad for Sandpoint mayor
Thank you to both Sandpoint mayoral candidates for appearing on radio interviews at 1400 KSPT/1450 KBFI. It takes courage to place oneself under the microscope of elected public service, thus thank you is due both Mose Dunkel and Shelby Rognstad.
Hearing is postponed in BGH theft case
SANDPOINT — A preliminary hearing in a felony theft case pending against Bonner General Health’s former chief financial officer is being postponed.
McNearney is best pick for Ponderay
A friend of mine is running for mayor of Ponderay. He is incredibly honest, forthright and has the vision to do the best job for that ‘super growing’ town.
Mose Dunkel will listen to citizens
So the city wants a sales tax increase for a Cadillac grandstand at Memorial Field in a town with a Chevy Spark budget. They want people, many already struggling, using food stamps and the food bank to pay for the luxury of a minority is unconscionably.

Bullpup boys cross country team first
SANDPOINT — The Sandpoint Middle School boys cross country team beat seven other teams to win the district cross country title recently at Ramsey Park in Coeur d’Alene, while the girls team finished second among six teams on the 1.5-mile course.
Candidate doesn't deserve our vote
We hear much about the qualifications of Shelby Rognstad for mayor. He has been on a committee, a commission, and is currently on the City Council. All of that means nothing to me anymore since the Bonner County Republican Women’s mayoral forum held on Oct. 20. Here’s why:
One focused on issues, other on hateful speech
For two months I’ve entirely focused on the most important issues facing Sandpoint.
Continue to honor our veterans by fixing field
The people of Bonner County dedicated War Memorial Field to those who made the ultimate sacrifice so our children would have a place for sport and games without the conflict of war hanging over their heads.
Rognstad is best pick for Sandpoint mayor
This may be the most important mayoral race in Sandpoint’s history. One the one hand, we have a candidate, Mr. Rognstad, who has considerable experience both in government and business. On the other hand, we have Mr. Dunkel who has no business or government experience.
Rognstad unqualified for any election position
Shelby Rognstad gave everybody a huge window into his attitude and ideology during the recent Republican Women’s mayoral forum: during the entire Pledge of Allegiance he put both hands behind his back and kept them there.
Suspect moves to suppress evidence
SANDPOINT — Counsel for a Bonner County man accused of wounding another man in a shooting at Bloom Lake is moving to suppress evidence in the case and prevent the state from introducing character evidence.
Burden on us to keep gem shining bright
Memorial Field/Barlow Stadium is truly a gem, a complex for athletic events and so many other uses such as the Festival at Sandpoint, graduation, etc.; probably unique in the Northwest for its setting and natural beauty.
Former worker alleges retaliation
SANDPOINT — A former longtime Bonner County Planning Department official contends he was railroaded out of a job for filing a grievance against a county commissioner who allegedly wanted to him to disregard the law.
Forget the calls, vote for the best candidate
In regards to Brenda Hammond’s letter to the Bee on how to counter the “robocalls,” has it occurred to anyone that this reaction could be exactly what the instigator was after in the first place.
Rognstad: I recite pledge

Shelby Rognstad is an establishment politician
As I listened to Shelby Rognstad’s presentation at a mayoral forum where he touted his eight-year service on a committee, commission, and the City Council as reasons to elect him, I came to realize that that is really not a plus: he’s just another establishment politician.

City administrator post raises many questions
As with all the other comments here, I was repulsed when I received the anti-Shelby robocall. Its tone reminded me of many of the posts on the Bee’s blog site from those who belong to a certain far end of the political spectrum.
Bulldogs handle business in rout of Grangeville
GRANGEVILLE — Kyle Perry ran for 116 yards on 17 carries and two scores, and Wyatt McCormick-Cox caught four passes for 109 yards and a pair of scores, leading Sandpoint to a 47-12 win over Grangeville on Saturday in a nonleague football game at Grangeville High School.

All trains will bring is increased risk
After the North Dakota crude oil boom started, trains began hauling explosive Bakken crude oil through northern Idaho. Two or three crude-by-rail trains, with more than 100 cars each, travel daily through communities to refineries and shipping terminals on the Washington coast. As a Sandpoint resident, all I see are risks to our lives, land and water. And all local travelers, including emergency vehicles, have longer waits at railroad crossings.
Selfish fears are victimizing us all
‘They’re Coming to Get our Guns’ crowd held a rally in Coeur d’Alene only two days after a mentally-troubled young man shot and killed nine community college students in Oregon. And despite NRA and Idaho GOP legislators maintaining that campuses would be safer if students were armed, an armed veteran who was there proved them wrong.
Only city residents should pay for field
Seems we — most residents in Sandpoint anyway — are in agreement with needing a new stadium. The hitch in the plan is who is going to pay for it. Those who would gain the most from an improved venue should shoulder the cost.
Community is too great for hate
While it is not illegal to verbalize racist views or language, doing so promotes a negative stereotype for our region that is damaging to both citizens and businesses. This is especially true when the language not only targets and disrupts the mayoral campaign of Sandpoint but makes negative references to Ferguson, Mo.
Keep Sandpoint's field of dreams
I stopped by Memorial Field one evening recently, walked up the ramp and observed every worn piece of board and all the cracked wood, and the soft remains of the old paint. I wondered what might happen to this place and this feeling of emotions swelled up inside of me.
A little driving will save some money
Advice for anyone driving to Bonners Ferry. Local gas prices vary from saving 25 cents per gallon compared to our local Sandpoint cartel. Shop around, if not, you may only save 20 cents.
Debate was big show with little substance
It’s been a week since Hillary and Bernie’s first debate. I can’t stop thinking about it. Wow, who wouldn’t vote for free college, free medical care (even illegals), lower taxes on middle class and higher on rich guys, better social security and Medicare benefits, green energy, and free abortions on us.

What did I work for all of these years?
I remember when I purchased my home in Sandpoint. Newer two-story, five bedrooms. Nice, family-friendly quiet area. I did it all by myself by working long hours, seven days a week. It was home to my son and family for six years. In 2008-2009 I became sick and also had several back injuries. I couldn’t work hardly at all. Slowly I was falling behind on my mortgage.
Bonner EMS station eyed in Sagle
SAGLE — The Bonner County Planning & Zoning Commission is conducting a public hearing next month on the county’s plan to establish an EMS station in Sagle.
How can we vet all of the refugees?
John Kerry said the U.S. will accept 85,000 Syrian refugees in 2016, and 100,000 in 2017. How can we possibly vet them all? The U.S. spent $500 million to train Syrian rebels to fight Asaad, and there are only five of them in the fight! We already have upwards of 11 million illegal aliens here, many are on welfare, many are criminals. I’m not a Trump supporter, but I can see why he says, “Our leaders are stupid.”
Who do you think will do a better job?
Four years ago, Mo Dunkel ran for mayor of Sandpoint. He lost the election, but not his opportunity to participate in city government. He has not participated. He has not joined a city committee (choices include: Planning and Zoning, Arts, Parks and Rec, Pedestrian and Bicycle, Tree, and Historical). He has attended perhaps two City Council meetings, of about 350 since that election.
Are we really getting the best candidate?
Am I beating a dead horse? Should I not be concerned about the process used to hire a city administrator? Are we ?OK with a mediocre process at best?
We have chance to save a community treasure
As a community we have an opportunity to save a great public asset by voting yes for a 1-percent local option sales tax to rebuild the grandstands at War Memorial Field.
Mo should run for Sandpoint council
Sandpoint needs an experienced leader to be mayor. Mo Dunkel has never held a public office. He should run for City Council to build up his experience and record before running for mayor. Without a public voting record, voters have no proof for how he would act as mayor.

All the risk and none of the rewards
A growing number of coal and crude oil trains are traveling through beautiful North Idaho. These trains do no business in Idaho. They slow and stop our daily traffic, foul our air, contaminate our water with their leaking tank cars, and threaten our lives with their explosive cargo. We accept certain risks to live in a rural paradise: less reliable fire protection and emergency protection, particularly in remote areas, and extra vigilance at unprotected railroad crossings.
It's important to know your leadership

Who's responsible for bypass problems?
So instead of repairing the bumps on the bypass we just put up yellow signs with black letters that read “bump.” Then as you leave Sandpoint on Superior toward the Long Bridge right at the 45 mph sign, it floods during every rainstorm, and when it snows, the snow melts and up goes another yellow sign with black letters that reads, “water over road.”

Closed door is preferred method for operation
The trend of closed door hiring is not new to this position of the newly-formed city administrator in fact it is their preferred method. The current planning and zoning director, the fire chief, the police chief and two of the current council seats were chosen this way. All of those positions were not as polarizing as the new administrator position because there was already an existing position to be filled. I believe in a small town the city has an obligation to keep every move as open as possible to not allow nepotism to creep in to the process.

I would like to set the record straight on a few points.

When The Rubber Hits The Road-Or Ice-This Winter, Will You Be Ready?
(NAPSI)—In winter, it’s not just about the precipitation on the road. Tires get cold, too, and when they’re cold, all-season tires don’t perform to their full potential. In fact, in temperatures as cool as 45 degrees or below, the rubber in all-season tires gradually hardens, leading to decreased road traction and less grip, causing difficulty with braking and turning. Winter tire safety experts at Discount Tire urge drivers to consider their cold weather climate; if it is regularly below 45 degrees, it’s time for a set of winter tires to keep you and your family safe on the roads this year.

How many crude oil trains are too many for the Northwest? A handful a week has grown into 15 to 18 trains now that plow through Sandpoint on their way to the five refineries and three export terminals now operating on the Pacific Northwest coast. Climate change facts noticeably omitted
It is interesting to many that an article about a “climate change” presentation was drafted and published prior to, the Bob Bingham presentation at the Bonner County Republican Women Inc. Deduced from this action is a coordinated effort between the author and publisher to smear the message and messengers, a classic statist tactic. Facts noticeably omitted from the Sept.15, 2015, article are significant. The failure of “good faith” research, allows one to present gaia zealotry as a means to obtain a socialist agenda, for which a sampling of opposing facts do exist:
