I question those cross-country skiing Scotchman Peaks alluded to in Mr. McKiernan’s editorial (Nov. 24, 2016). After viewing snapshots of Scotchman Peak, Vertigo Ridge, Spar Peak, Jonathan Crag or Sawtooth Mountain (Scotchman Peaks wilderness map 2013) I question the ability to even reach those destinations in the winter let alone cross-country ski them … most of this is in Montana anyway? This map versus the Forest Service map version of boundaries seem to morph into different configurations, at will/convenience! So, what is going on, bait and switch?

There is much discussion about the failure of education. I see fingers pointed at teachers, administrators, lack of funding, and more. But the blame always seems to be pointed at the education system. There are always problems with any large system. And the education system is no exception. And many giving their whole heart and sometimes getting it broken. I have also been speaking with local businesses concerning the quality of the education of high school and college graduates seeking employment (but, I’ll get to that later).

Christmas decorations
My wife started decorating for Christmas on the 2nd of December; a little later than usual. She asked me to go up to the attic and bring down the box that contained our artificial tree and all the rest of our Christmas decorations. As she was opening the boxes, she stopped. She rummaged around and found our Christmas music and put five CDs on the player and turned up the volume. She was now in the mood. I helped her put on the lights and then sat in a chair in the same room where her flurry of decorating was taking place and I buried myself in a novel. As the tree came to life, she decorated and hummed to the music; I sat and read. I know, I know — but she’s just better at it than I am.

Have you been on the receiving — or giving — end of ageism humor? “Over the hill,” etc? I have. But I hope to stop using such humor, and if I’m the target of that humor, I’ll find some response honoring my age. More and more, I see our ever-present jokes about aging as go-away-closer humor. Somehow, it seems to help push away our fears about aging, even as laughing about our aging helps us discover we aren’t any worse the wear. 'Tots' looks to create smiles
SANDPOINT — “Let us always meet each other with smile, for the smile is the beginning of love.” Mother Teresa
Jesus is the name above all names
“For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6 So proclaims one of the greatest verses of hope in the Bible. No other religion, no other faith, has ever given such a truly wondrous gift to the world. In light of the recent political elections, not even the most seasoned candidate could match the promise of God given through the gift of His one and only Son, Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. The government can promise you free health care, lower taxes, safety from foreign invaders, protection from criminals, freedom of worship, yet all those promises by men and women in high places, wielding great power, and controlling massive amounts of money, can only deliver on those promises as God allows them to do so. Like it or not, all the powers of the all the nations of the world are at the mercy of Jesus.

For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” Sometimes in the hustle and bustle of the season, and in the constant stream of media attention on the other aspects of Christmas, people can get distracted from what this holiday is really all about. Thirteen years ago, Cabinet Mountain Calvary Chapel in Clark Fork decided that they were going to help people remember the one thing about Christmas that matters the most.

Keeping CHRIST during Christmas
Every year it just seems to get worse. Now there’s talk about making “Black Friday” into “Black Thursday,” with big commercial stores beginning their “holiday sales” on Thanksgiving Day — infringing on the true meaning of both Thanksgiving and Christmas. And of course, we’ve noticed that advertising for “Christmas” is beginning even before Halloween in some quarters.

Open letter to Shawn Woodward and Shawn Keough:

Cottonwoods play key role in environment
A year or so ago, I wrote an article on cottonwood trees for the Scotchman Peaks Newsletter. For a few years I had enjoyed providing educational articles for the quarterly — generally on native plants common to the Scotchman wilderness area. It occurred to me that the information in some of those columns might prove of interest to Bee readers, and the cottonwood story decided me to share at least part of it. Our area is blessed with many of these big trees, often undeservedly maligned.
