Fences, neighbors, and learning about each other
I enjoy an experience since I moved into Sandpoint from its rural environs. My neighbor and I talk over our adjoining fence. My town veggie garden separates our yards and I share my harvest with her each year. I never grew up experiencing sharing a fence and neighbor conversation. I remember Robert Frost’s poem relating that “good fences make good neighbors.” It always struck me that good fences meant separation so that each participant could remain themselves and not be totally influenced by the participant on the other side. I thought then, “OK, separation must mean being able to remain an individual while being “friendly.”

Getting Lost in the 50s: 1850, 1950 and 2050
We are closer to the year 2050 than we are to 1950. And the way the universe works, the future accelerates toward us, whereas the past drifts along slowly behind. There’s a more technical explanation of why this is so, but it involves taking up valuable space here with the Lorenz transformation, muons, and gravitational redshift. When The Daily Bee gives me a physics column, we can get into the quantum mechanics of time compression in more detail. Until then, here’s another way to understand this concept: we barely remember Christmas-past and we are totally surprised that July 4th is almost here.

I find Barack Obama’s visit to the atom bomb museum in Hiroshima very offensive. His going there was an implied apology for our use of the atomic bomb to end World War II. We were not the aggressors in World War II. It was Japan who pulled a sneak attack on Pearl Harbor while their peace emissaries were in Washington. It was Japanese who forced the Bataan death march, and who cruelly tortured and starved hundreds of our young men they held prisoner. You think Abu Graib was bad? It was a birthday party compared to Japanese prison camps. The political descent of the Republican Party
As we head into the presidential elections, a useful and insightful book to read about presidential character is a “Team of Rivals” by well-respected historian, Doris Kearns Goodwin. This acclaimed book is a detailed study about Abraham Lincoln and his cabinet. In her introduction, Lincoln had the admirable qualities of “···kindness, sensitivity, compassion, honesty and empathy···.” Besides being gifted with great humor, he was lenient, gracious and magnanimous. He would listen to his critics, and neither was vindictive, revengeful nor carried grudges. He assumed responsibility for the failures of his subordinates and easily shared credit with them. He was self-confident, but he learned from his mistakes. Often he wrote apologies to those he felt he had slighted. When the Civil War ended, he was not triumphal or boastful. And, he truly felt the pain and agony for the fallen soldiers on both sides of the War.

Zucchini shines in seasonal fare
Zucchini! Eat it raw in salads, grill or stir-fry it, grate it for slaw or quick bread, use it in kabobs; what would we do without it? It’s probably the most versatile of veggies — and the most taken for granted and allowed to grow to monster size (still good, however, for bread-making).

Useful tools beyond duct tape
You know how many people love duct tape? Duct tape is so useful for so many needs. I see cars with silver duct tape patching up auto booboos and red duct tape holding together translucent red cellophane over tail lights. Now artists and crafters are fashioning multi-patterned and colored duct tape into jewelry. Ingenious for our beloved favorite mending product.
