Because my husband and I are both unaffiliated voters, we called the county clerk’s office a couple of days prior to the election to be sure we would be able to vote. We were told by whomever answered the phone that we had to be registered Republicans to vote in the Republican primary. We do not live in the Colburn polling district, so it is possible there have been other districts where polling places did not have the right information in handing out ballots.

Why is The Festival at Sandpoint still being held at Memorial Field? According to a 1993 settlement agreement between The Festival, the city of Sandpoint and the area residents, the last year The Festival was to be held at Memorial Field was 1995. Most of The Festival events have been losing money annually and it’s the sponsors and donations that have kept them going. It appears one of the main reasons The Festival continues is so The Festival’s employees can continue receiving their lucrative and, in my opinion, unearned salaries.

Fire district low on manpower
PRIEST RIVER — The maps on the wall tell the story. In the meeting room at West Pend Oreille Fire District’s Station 1, Chief Les Kokanos pierces maps of the city and county with new pins marking each spot that fire district volunteers respond to a call. Last year, the district’s volunteer crew went out an average of twice a day — 660 times in a 365-day long year. Those maps were jam-packed with pins.

Our current sheriff claims he has the power to decide which laws to enforce. But, Idaho Code requires him to enforce all state laws and codes. Our founding fathers rebelled against a ruler who made laws, interpreted laws, enforced laws, and was arbitrary. So, they divided powers and in those powers, one government branch makes laws, another interprets laws (courts) and then grants powers to enforce them. Our sheriff’s job is to enforce the law of the land: county, state and federal and takes an oath of office to carry on that responsibility. Ominously, it appears our current sheriff also feels he can choose which laws to carry out as he has stated at public forums.

One person, one vote. It is time to end pledged delegates, superdelegates, and the Electoral College. Our presidential election system should be based on the will of the people. Nothing more, nothing less. With delegates, conventions, and everything pertaining to the elections the way it is now, we need to get out of the horse and buggy, whale oil lamp era and all of the other old-fashioned ideas and get into the 21st century with computers, space travel, etc. Come on America, wake up. Change this now.
