On a recent backpacking trip our peace was violently disturbed by the sound of gunshots ricocheting between the mountain walls. Physically shaking I approached the shooters, a group of young day hikers. I expressed my concern only to receive a lecture that this is N-Idaho and they have the right to shoot anywhere and I don’t have to be concerned as it is safe to shoot across the lake. Several of my kids open carry, but they do so with a sense of responsibility and respect, and target shoot in a designated place. There were camping spots across the lake and climbers were coming down from the mountain, both invisible to the shooters. Bullets can ricochet off the surface of water as well as off rocks and go quite far. At this time of the year there is a high fire alert and bullets can cause sparks that can cause smoldering fires. Besides the actual danger, random shooting around a lake with known campgrounds constitutes a nuisance if nothing else. Like the game warden we met on our way out mentioned, we have the right to use guns but we do not have the right to be stupid.

A team of local citizens is considering asking that Scotchman’s Peak be designated as a state park rather than a wilderness area. An open, non-petulant discussion of that alternative idea seems worthwhile. About one year ago, I heard a woman tell Raul Labrador that state agencies do not know how to manage our forests. A series of articles at perc.org which are less than four years old concluded that the state of Idaho managed Idaho forests and recreation areas far more efficiently and less expensively than the U.S. Bureau of Land Management of the U.S. Forest Service. Rheumatoid arthritis among most common autoimmune diseases
If we’re like the average person, when told we have a medical condition we ask the question, “Why me? What did I do or not do to get this disorder?” With autoimmune diseases often the answer is, “No one knows for sure why …” And, rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease.
How do your kids measure up with fitness?
The kids are back in full swing — with school and sporting activities. Some of our youth are going to school — then coming home to sit in front of the television. The lifestyles of today’s youth have undergone enormous changes. Cell phone texting is NOT a sport. Television, computers and video games have replaced many of the physical activities children once enjoyed. So when we discuss our children, we often hear words like ‘obesity’, ‘heart disease’, ‘high blood pressure’ and ‘diabetes’. Back “in the day”, getting a sliver or losing a tooth use to be the only thing a child worried about — why is it that society allows our children to concern themselves with these issues? Why can’t a child just be a child?

We must speak out on refugee relocation
After 35 years in trial practice, I’ve learned that it isn’t what people tell you, it’s what they don’t tell you that counts. Given the turmoil in our country right now, I question whether the Armstrongs and the concerned citizens supporting relocating refugees to Sandpoint have all the facts about the course they advocate. The key issue is why the London-based International Rescue Committee, or “IRC”, selected Northern Idaho and Sandpoint in particular as a target for resettling people with such a controversial background? To understand the situation, we need to look at who is actually behind the agenda. The Armstrongs represented the International Rescue Committee, or “IRC”. Unfortunately, and probably unknown to them, the IRC has a rather disturbing history.

'The Story' coming to Christ Our Redeemer
All books, and all stories, have a beginning and an ending. The Bible starts with, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” If we flip to the last book of the Bible, Revelation, the second to last chapter, it says, “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away.” That begs a question. What on earth happened? Why does there have to be a new heaven and a new earth? The answer to that question, and to many more, are found in the pages between those two books.

My father, like most veterans, never shared much of his war experiences with us kids. However, after his death I discovered a diary he kept during the war. My handwriting is not so unlike my dad’s so I could make out his scribbling, albeit with some difficulty.

On the surface at least it feels as if the modern world is moving faster and faster. Work and time combine to place us with faceless multitudes for the majority and leave the minority a scant time to cram memories into the pause. The price of progress is both a truth and a lie. The phrase dances in gray to a tune obsessed with black and white. You’re either with us or against us are the sharp-edged lyrics. With all the false facts floating around about why we need the Scotchman Peaks designated as wilderness I would like to say, why do we need 14,000 acres when the majority of people — I did my own gallop poll, talked to 23 people who have hiked to Scotchman Peak in the last two years — say they go to the trailhead and hike to the peak and then back to their car. Out of the 23 people I have talked about going up only two have stated they went beyond to Scotchman 2. So why not make the 4,000 acres above timberline into wilderness and leave the rest alone so it can be managed for wildlife habitat, fire control, and timber management?
