Fixing tax code benefits U.S., helps economy
A typical family of four will get a $2,059 tax cut. Lower-middle and middle income families can save time and money on tax preparation due to the near doubling of the standard deduction and other simplifications. According to more than 100 economists, “economic growth will accelerate” under the tax relief legislation passed by Congress, which will give Americans access to higher wages, greater job opportunities and a more vibrant economy. There is no need to take our word for all of this; just look at your W-2 paycheck starting in February and you will see more take home pay. FFOC partners with Cedar Hills congregation
Food For Our Children, a local nonprofit organization, is raising money to provide weekend food, during the school year, to our children-in-need in Bonner County. For the last school year, approximately 14,000 food bags were taken home by our children. This holiday season Cedar Hills Church partnered with FFOC to provide an extra bag of food for the holiday break, along with a special gift and a new book.
A season of Hope
Shortly after moving here on November 20th, 2014, my wife was involved in a roll-over accident due to black ice. The car flipping end over end rested up against the railroad track in Garwood...my wife unable to move had broken her neck. We would forever view the holiday season in a different light, thankful God had spared her life and the lives of my daughter, who was driving along with 4 of our grandkids. My wife clamped in a neck brace would come home for Christmas as we awaited her spinal fusion surgery right after New Years. I remember cutting a tree for her, a little spindly thing from our ranch and putting a little string of lights on the tree. My wife was elated, our first Christmas tree in Idaho...no decorations JUST LIGHTS....The lights were the most important part because of what they represented....HOPE! When times are dark, a little light goes a long way! The lights we place on our tree this time of year continue to represent hope as my wife continues to battle chronic pain! My wife and I continue to pray that our community of Sandpoint will become known as a beacon of light, a beacon of hope for the rest of our country! It all begins with one person at a time who shares a little extra love during this holiday season...It can happen, in fact it already has.

Volunteer tutors help library create lifelong learners
When I was in the 10th grade, my grades were slipping. I had trouble following teachers. I didn’t understand math and the teacher went too fast, so when I didn’t understand a part of the homework, I fell behind. In English and social studies, it was the same. I read slowly, so reading a chapter was a painstaking effort which would go unfinished in many cases. In most cases, I struggled to make a C average.

Merry Christmas is a declaration of peace
The Christmas holiday is upon us, and one thing I hear people talk about this time of year involves how busy we get. Lots of great opportunities to connect with friends and family; the parties, shopping, and hosting are usually really fun, but they do take time and energy. Expectations or financial strain can also be high, and when things don’t match up or get out of balance (which is often the case) there can be a let-down, or depression, that follows. Plus, it’s really dark this time of year as the sun is low on the horizon or enshrouded by clouds, and this adds to the dynamic. For many, the holidays can be a challenging struggle.

Libraries, net neutrality and internet regulations
The internet search engine is our society’s go-to for the most recent news on any given topic. Most of us take for granted that when we type into the search box, our wish is Google’s command. But this genie presents us with options. It is up to us to sort out the information that is unbiased and from a reputable source. But, is information literacy the only potential obstacle to accessing the content we seek on the internet?

The Inside Edge - Shiffrin on fire
n She’s everywhere — Mikaela Shiffrin is hands down the best female ski racer in the World, and possibly the most dominant athlete as well. So this week our intrepid Slalom ace decided to dabble in the speed events at Lake Louise, and came away with Gold and Bronze in the two Downhills, plus an impressive fifth place in Super G. This girl does it all. Our ladies showed depth in the speed events, with Jacqui Wiles posting Downhill finishes of fifth and 23rd, Breezy Johnson placing 10th and Stacey cook 11th and 6th. Lindsey Vonn’s return from injury remains frustrating. She only finished one of the three races, posting 12th in the second Downhill.

Friday night last, someone removed two of my front yard signs protesting oil and coal trains and deposited them flat on the yard across the street. He also removed a peace flag from the front porch and dropped it on the driveway. Let’s see: trespass, theft, destruction and littering. He didn’t show enough courtesy to leave literature or DVDs. In the past, most homes in the neighborhood received one or both of those items, except us. I feel much better now.

WA, smelter officials don't care about Idaho
To say I was dismayed at Wednesday’s night’s proposed smelter “forum” in Newport would be an understatement. They started out by locking us out in the cold until 15 minutes before it was to begin. The gym at the high school was more than adequate for the disappointing turnout. At the end of the basketball court was a podium and a table on each side staffed by HiTest mine board. They were introduced by a visibly intimidated county commissioner who I think was Karen Skoog. She was very upset that local residents were mean spirited toward her on this matter, she encouraged politeness and self-restraint during the ordeal to follow.
