Community has long history of supporting schools
We have a long history of supporting public schools. In 1883 Sandpoint parents scraped to-gether money to hire a teacher. Class was held in homes and even a former saloon. With more students by 1892, the local school board spent $312 to furnish a small building with desks, blackboard, and map. A 4 mill levy approved that year raised funds for a permanent school building. In the 125 years since, our community has continued to support schools with subsequent levies.
Yes vote is the only answer for our schools
The battle of misinformation has been waged by a small group of naysayers in Bonner County. They question the need and second-guess those tasked with educating our young minds.

In LPOSD’s supplemental levy information I noticed the following: “This is not a permanent levy. Our school board decided against asking voters for a permanent levy. This is a two-year levy.”

Unfortunately, the Idaho Legislature does not adequately support education. What our Legislature budgets for K-12 education per student ranks 49 or 50th in the nation among our fellow states. LPOSD and virtually every other district in the state of Idaho are dependent on additional funds from the community to maintain a quality program. Without these community levy funds, the district would be a shell of what is now and the losers would be the most vulnerable with the smallest voices, the kids.

Why should the citizens living in the East Bonner County School District support the upcoming supplemental school levy? The only reason we know of is that the children in the school system today are tomorrow’s leaders in all levels of society. Whether they chose to follow the arts, the sciences, the humanities, become tradesmen or elect to be a stay-at-home parent, they must have the best education that the school system can provide. This education will be financed by us, the taxpayer, and it will be us, the taxpayer, who will reap the benefit of knowing that we did our best to get today’s students started down the road to success.

What if the levy doesn’t pass? Will local schools be forced to close? Here is the heartbreaking truth — if the levy fails, in first year following the failure, the district will be forced to consolidate schools. Consolidating means some students will be left in the school, as would be the requirement by law, prior to full school closure. The school closure process is lengthy as the district must consolidate first.

From elementary school through my graduation from Sandpoint High School in 2011, the education I received in the Lake Pend Oreille School District was instrumental in preparing me to be successful in college and in the workplace. I am a product of the quality instruction, curriculum, and extracurricular activities that have been funded through supplemental levies. I can generally trace any successes that I have had academically and in the workplace back to the hard work and dedication of teachers working at every level in the LPOSD and to the activities and passions that they helped develop in me from an early age. “Extracurriculars” like sports, band, and academic decathlon are not “extras” but fundamental to a well-rounded education and help students (and future employees or business owners) work in teams, express themselves creatively, interview effectively to get a job, and be successful in competitive work environments.

Levy dollars invest in entire area
I would like to urge voters in the LPOSD levy to look deeply at the economic and far reaching community impact our schools have. Sandpoint is fortunate to have clean, growing companies such as Quest, Litehouse and Kochava and others that have invested in our area because they believe in the quality of life here. Without a solid public school system, attracting and retaining quality employees becomes challenging. Parents want smaller class sizes, access to student activities and a rigorous curriculum that will challenge their children. Sometimes it is robotics, sports, the Cedar Post or singing that becomes the one thing that keeps kids invested in graduating, unlocks their love of learning and develops leadership skills they take with them into adulthood.

In his polemic against secular humanism, Jason Otto (Feb. 10, Daily Bee) overlooks a salient fact. Federal law requires public schools operate as secular entities. (Secular meaning not connected with religious or spiritual matters.) Public schools students are not indoctrinated with secular humanism. Rather, the schools function as secular, religion-neutral institutions tasked with serving a public with widely differing religious beliefs. This impartial approach mitigates against serious conflicts that would arise if one religion were given preference over another at taxpayer expense.

The time has come again for us to show support for our local children and schools. The LPOSD replacement levy will replace the expiring levy. However, due to rising district assessed valuation, the levy rate has dropped by 4.9 percent in the last 4 years. This levy will fund all curricular and instructional materials, all academic and athletic extracurricular activities, and 1/3 of all district staff.

District has the best leadership and schools
Having been a member of the LPOSD school board for 11 years now, I am well aware that criticism comes with the job. What is unique is having someone new to our community devote their life to attacking the district from the moment they arrived. Mr. Rose is against virtually everything that the school district does. He rebuffs repeated offers to sit down at the table of ideas. Apparently he has no ideas or vision for the future of LPOSD. He has no historical knowledge of our district. Flooding the district with FOIA requests in a desperate search for anything to use to discredit the district has turned up nothing. He invents, twists and otherwise uses gross misrepresentations of the truth in order to support his unwarranted attacks. Be wary of his representations. Mr. Rose has been exposed as anti-public schools.

I am respectfully asking voters to consider voting yes in the upcoming levy. Exceptional schools are not only important for the students who attend them; they are vitally important to our community services and economy. For a small town, we are blessed with outstanding community services including high quality healthcare services, legal services, contracting services, stores, etc. A key component in attracting and keeping these community resources is our schools. Having high quality schools and community services attracts businesses; this creates jobs and drives our economy. One of the first questions that potential service providers and businesses ask when considering Sandpoint is how our schools compare to other areas. High quality schools also provide an excellent pool of qualified employees right here at home. Providing our students with a great education gives them the opportunity for good employment and a strong future. Historically, our community has supported our schools which has made us stand out compared to other regions; therefore, service providers and employers have been drawn here, keeping our town economically sound and providing outstanding community services. Supporting schools supports having community services in town so that we don’t have to drive to Coeur d’Alene or Spokane, and it keeps businesses that provide jobs in Bonner County. Please consider voting yes in the upcoming levy. Thank you.

While respect must be shown for a public office, is respect due to someone elected to that office that sullies it? My thoughts were the same as Rick Miller’s; that our representative knew very well how to use sexual favors to get committee assignments. Our representative also cast a spotlight on the person receiving those favors in exchange for making the assignments. Since she made a fool of herself, no respect should be due to her; thus no apology from the publisher is necessary for printing Miller’s letter.

I am writing in support of the Lake Pend Oreille School District levy. We have a great school district and the main reason it is that way is because the people who live here invest in the schools. The State of Idaho does not provide enough funding to support schools. It is the local districts that have to make up the difference. This is one reason they call it “local control”, because we get to choose the level of support we provide our own schools.
The facts and history on Scotchman Peaks
After being embroiled in politics for over 33 years as a public servant, 11 of that as the district ranger at Sandpoint, I rarely have the desire to enter that fray again. However, after reading letters to the editor and opinions in the Daily Bee for the past several months, I have decided to wade in on the issue. I was trained as a scientist and try not to influence people with emotional rhetoric or by taking a little bit of information and twisting it to fit a political agenda. Making informed decisions based on factual information today is a challenge. That said, here is how I view the facts.

Tim Knapp (Daily Bee, Jan. 26, 2017) improperly conflates secular humanism with despotism; falsely blaming the former for the “violence and discord”perpetrated by the latter. The “Affirmations of Humanism – Counsel for Secular Humanism” promote mutual respect, equal justice, democratic governance, and human dignity. The dictators whom Mr. Knapp has previously listed were most assuredly not practicing humanists. They were power-hungry authoritarians who violated virtually all of humanism’s basic precepts. By wrongly categorizing violent historical figures as humanists, Mr. Knapp has become yet another purveyor of fake news consisting of “alternative facts.”
