I recently attended a town hall meeting hosted by Rep. Sage Dixon. A prelude to the meeting was a young man beginning his political career, either as a politician or perhaps just as an involved citizen. His concept, while perhaps honorable, presented a very bleak picture of our country. If you listen to President Donald Trump or to someone like Rush Limbaugh, practically every other sentence talks about how bad things are in this country. They and their followers scream that the sky is falling and pants on fire.

I am writing this letter in support of wilderness designation for the Scotchman Peaks area.
No headline
I wholeheartedly support designating Scotchman Peaks for wilderness because protecting the natural resources in this area for future generations is extremely important to me. We would be providing wilderness in North Idaho, where none exists; which would designate as wilderness only one-half percent of the 2.5 million acres that the Idaho Panhandle NF currently manages for multiple use. There are many areas on the IPNF for timber harvest and motorized recreation; but as wilderness Scotchman Peaks would be protected forever, void of roads or development, where one can hike, camp, hunt, fish and find solitude. My career and love for the outdoors has afforded me many opportunities for hiking in some of the premier Wildernesses in this country; from the BWCA in Minnesota; to the Maroon BellsSnowmass Wilderness in Colorado; to the Bob Marshall Wilderness in Montana; to the Eagle Cap Wilderness in Oregon; and now in Sandpoint, where I’m blessed to have Scotchman Peaks in my backyard.

Shrub responsible for wildlife deaths
A couple of weeks ago I received a phone call from special pal and former co-worker at the Bee, Betty Johnson. After a bit of “catching-up” she told me the reason for her call. She had been watching a female moose browsing the shrubs in her yard and suddenly noticed that it had begun tossing its head about and shaking its head and ears — staggering about and then seemingly becoming angry and making hostile “charges” toward the house. After a time, with no let-up in the creature’s actions, Betty called Matt Haag at Idaho Fish & Game and explained the moose’s behavior to him. Bless his heart, he actually went to her house to observe! The moose lay down briefly and Matt ascertained that she was pregnant, and after checking the bushes she’d been eating, established that they were Japanese Yew (Taxus custidata).

Secular humanism promotes evidence-based (versus faith-based) reasoning and discounts the notion of supernatural intervention in worldly affairs. These are also basic tenets of the scientific method. Rejection of these aspects of secular humanism is, ipso facto, a repudiation of mainstream science. (A 2009 PEW poll of members of the American Association for Advancement of Science found 98 percent were proponents of the theory of evolution.)

There's no doubt: Walls need to stay down
As I recall recent history the reminder of the “wall of shame” that was the Berlin Wall comes to mind, especially for the focal point it provided President Ronald Reagan in calling out for its removal. As we embark upon a fiscally impractical southern border the historical record looms large as to the efficacy of such great walls. Do we not read and learn from history, or is such a border wall really a device to rhetorically allay fears that are stoked by the “nattering nabobs of negativism” that tell us our country is crumbling? That last quotation was borrowed from Spiro Agnew as an opening salvo directed at the news media. It is relevant today but in a vice versa other way around use for the politics of fear that is spouted about our country’s demise.

Scotchman Peaks Wilderness bill is just common sense
I, like many Idahoans, depend upon our public lands for my livelihood. As a representative of the timber industry, I understand how important it is to have healthy forests that produce wood for products that we all use in our homes, jobs, and hobbies. But I also understand how critical it is to preserve our wildest lands — the lands that keep our water and air clean and serve as a home for wildlife. That is why I was pleased to hear that Sen. Jim Risch introduced the Scotchman Peaks Wilderness Act. This legislation will safeguard roughly 13,900 acres of public lands in Bonner County as wilderness.

Preserving wilderness and protecting natural resources are issues that deeply matter to me, and I strongly support designating the Scotchman Peaks area as wilderness. Our public lands are to be managed for multiple uses. We have thousands of acres of public land in the Idaho panhandle that are currently open to timber harvesting and to wheeled recreation. We do not currently have any wilderness. Let’s provide some balance in our land use and protect space for those, like myself, who want a place of quiet solitude, and a place where plants and animals can thrive away from roads and development. The Scotchman Peaks has been included within the forest planning process for at least the last decade and has been managed as proposed wilderness since the late 1970s. There has already been much work done and compromises agreed upon to arrive at the current proposal. It’s time to move forward with wilderness designation for the Scotchman Peaks.

In response to Ms. Paterson’s letter (Daily Bee, Feb 22): What is debatable about climate change is modeling the future rate of change. Is the rate of ocean or land temperature change by a certain date speeding up or slowing down? What should not be debated or questioned are the facts: atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations are increasing, climate change is occurring and it is still happening faster than any other period due to human influence. Even Exxon knew in 1977 that CO2 from fossil fuel use would warm the planet and endanger humanity (Inside Climate News 9/16/15).

Our community and the Scotchman Peaks
Now that a Scotchman Peaks Wilderness Bill has been introduced in Congress, the question is raised again, “How will this affect our community?” Studies have reliably shown an economic benefit to communities located near designated wilderness. Does this mean large numbers of tourists from all over the world will descend on Scotchmans? Of course not. The economic advantage comes in part from people desiring the lifestyle of a community permanently and uniquely touched by a beautiful and free place left in its natural state.

Ten years ago, the supplemental levy run by LPOSD was just under $9 million and the staffing component was about $2 million, which is 22 percent. This year it’s $17million and the staffing component is just over $14 million, about 82 percent. During that same 10-year period, LPOSD lost 387 students. So: fewer students but outsized levy? This is not something that makes sense to fiscally responsible people.

I am voting “yes” on the supplemental levy on March 14. The faculty and staff of LPOSD do incredible work on a shoe-string budget. The kids can use extra counseling and the present counseling staff, fantastic as they are, can use the help. A modest increase in the budget would help deliver better educational product. It is more than acceptable.

As a caring, hard-working, tax-paying, property-owning father who wants safety and stability for my children, I would be deeply concerned if the district were forced into double-shifting. While it saves a nice chunk of money as the district does not have to pay to maintain, heat, and oversee as many schools, it has major drawbacks. With already-inflated class sizes due to staffing cuts, in double-shifting districts, students are selected either for the early school day or the late school day. Students who are in the evening shift have to walk or ride home in the dark. Students in the morning shift have to walk or ride to school in the dark.

As a full-time working mother of three children, I’d like to voice my support for the March 14 levy. I want my children to go to schools with sports activities, manageable class sizes, and adequate supplies. The idea of my children being forced to attend school with larger class sizes due to staffing cuts appalls me. Idaho already has a smaller average class size than Washington state. It would be tragic if our classes were forced up into the 30s and 40s due to budget cuts which cause staffing cuts if this levy is not approved.

Join district in continuing a tradition of excellence
Every time the board sets out to work on the budget we find ourselves trying to balance our upward trajectory in student achievement against the monetary request and impact on our local community. How far can the budget be scrubbed, trimmed and streamlined and still maintain the good work of the staff and students? It is a responsibility that we take seriously. Every time we go through this process the debate will eventually center on how close to that line we can come before we hit the tipping point and we adversely affect student achievement. On occasion we cross that line and need to build back with the next budget cycle. Our goal is to deliver the best education possible at the best price.

I moved to Sandpoint in 1982, and felt blessed to teach in a small, tightly knit, rural community with goals to make the schools the very best in the state, while still preserving the character and flavor of what made the community unique. The schools and activities were the absolute hub of this little town. Our rural schools provided an important connection and social gathering place to the stakeholders, like extended family. Since my first years here, I consistently have seen the district take solid steps forward to provide quality education and opportunity to students while retaining that unmistakable 7B pride and identity.

When time came to move back to North Idaho, I sought out working at LPOSD because, after all my travels around the state working for the division, I knew that LPOSD was one of the best. I returned to LPOSD in 2009. This is the district of my choice because of the professionalism of the staff, the strength of the community, and the families that we serve with our schools.

While the proposed plant levy last year was, admittedly, ambitious—and to some avaricious—the supplemental levy (and this is something many people simply don’t understand) is routine upkeep, supplemental funding necessary to keep our schools open and, in doing so, maintain reasonable class sizes throughout the district. The financial impact incurred by each individual is, in comparison to the plant levy, nominal, particularly when juxtaposed to the detrimental effects its failure stands to have on students — the reason we have schools in the first place, lest anyone forgot.

Of milkweed and butterflies
Few species spark people’s wonder and passion like the monarch butterfly. With its fiery-orange and black pattern and large wingspan, the monarch is among the most recognized of insects in North America. Its life cycle is a complex marvel involving a lengthy migration completed “relay-style” by several generations in a single year. During their summer wanderings, female monarchs lay their eggs on the leaves of milkweeds — the sole food source for their striking yellow, white, and black-striped caterpillars. Milkweeds are the essential links of the chain that connect monarch breeding populations across North America.

An improved government is up to all of us
“Civility is about more than just politeness, although politeness is a necessary first step. It is about disagreeing without disrespect, seeking common ground as a starting point for dialogue about differences, listening past one’s preconceptions, and teaching others to do the same. Civility is the hard work of staying present even with those with whom we have deep-rooted and fierce disagreements. It is political in the sense that it is a necessary prerequisite for civic action. But it is political, too, in the sense that it is about negotiating interpersonal power such that everyone’s voice is heard, and nobody’s is ignored.”

My family is truly a LPOSD success story. My wife and I raised three children and they all attended LPOSD schools from K-12. Our school district did a remarkable job in preparing my children for life beyond high school and college. All three thrived in LPOSD. They did well in the classroom, applied to some of the countries most selective colleges, competed with large national applicants pools, and were admitted. They were not only admitted but earned incredibly generous academic scholarships, without which they could never attend such prestigious and expensive schools. Kids from a small rural district in Sandpoint can compete and succeed against kids from any school district in the country; we did it.
