Nell Shipman — silent film writer, director and star — came to Idaho’s Priest Lake from Hollywood in 1922 with her 10-year-old son, her ill-fated lover-producer, a future Academy Award-winning cinematographer (Joseph Walker) and a personal zoo of 70 animal actors that included bobcats, bears, elk, eagles, deer and sled dogs. Second Amendment applies to everyone
I would like to respond to Mr. Joseph Henry Wythe’s letter from the Oct. 12 edition. Mr. Wythe makes many capricious claims that cannot be left unchallenged. First, Mr. Wythe claims an overwhelming majority of citizens are in favor of gun control. This is typical liberal spin. When asked blanket survey questions about reducing gun violence, of course the majority of people agree that we should work to prevent unnecessary deaths and injuries. But there is no evidence that the majority of people believe gun control is the way to achieve this. Further, there is plenty of statistical evidence available proving that an armed citizenry actually decreases violent crime rates. The liberals like to try and counter this by trotting out numbers of accidental gun deaths. But what they don’t tell you is that they include suicides in that data. Preventing suicide is a mental health issue, not a gun control issue.

I was the transportation planner on the North Zone Planning Team for the newly formed Idaho Panhandle National Forest in1973. A discussion was being held on the topic of wilderness areas and what we, as a planning team, should consider in developing management strategies for the forest. At some point, the planning team leader asked the question as to how we as individual members of the team would define wilderness. One person thought wilderness was a place where the natural wildland environment would be protected for perpetuity. Another though that wilderness was a necessity to provide a refuge for solitude seekers. Another said it was an area untrammeled by man where nature managed the resources. Finally, a young woman on the team from Portland, Oregon’s inner city was asked for her definition of wilderness and she responded, “Wilderness for me is downtown Sandpoint, Idaho, on a Saturday night.”

Isn’t it interesting that the most “intelligent” species on Earth is also the most dangerous? It’s bad enough that a lone person can perpetrate a scene like Las Vegas but humans in general cause all of the hateful, dangerous situations that go on and on forever. We can sit around and believe that we are better than many other creatures on Earth while causing nothing but killing and chaos wherever we go, because we think we are better than all of God’s other creatures. No one wants to face the fact that without humans, the world would not only survived, it would thrive.

It was surprising that in his opinion of wilderness and wildlife management in Idaho, Al Van Vooren, former Idaho Department of Fish and Game supervisor, made no reference to the January 2017 ruling by U.S. District Court Judge Winmill that forced IDFG to destroy elk and wolf data collected in the Frank Church Wilderness. Three lawsuits were filed by environmental groups protesting the use of helicopters (which was approved by USFS) and wildlife management in the wilderness and this ruling essentially stopped cold, Idaho’s ability to manage wildlife in wilderness. Judge Winmill, a Clinton appointee, stated after the ruling: “The IDFG has collected data in violation of federal law and intends to use that data to seek approvals in the future for more helicopter landings in the wilderness area.”

Thoughts on God, family and country
“God, Family, Country” is one of my favorite Craig Morgan country songs as well as an order of great spiritual significance. It is a noble thing to take our focus off of our busy lives and address the abuses and inequalities that are happening in our churches, families, and our country. That is a biblical mandate of all who claim to follow Christ. Yet it is not right to ever disrespect and disparage one of the three in an effort to call out perceived problems in the other. That is what appears to be happening when players of any sport kneel during times set aside to honor our country and those who currently protect it and those who have died to keep us safe and free.

I’ve summitted Scotchman Peak from the northeast—not an easy feat—and via the trail more times than my neighbors have planted silly white signs in their front yards. I love this proposed wilderness, and this is my front yard. I support the wilderness, and I’m concerned that a number of people are letting themselves be misled by misinformation, and provoked to fear—which thrives on ignorance—to oppose it.

A recent contributor to “My Turn” quoted a George Wuerthner as saying,”Wilderness protection reduces wildfires,” claiming that is better than active forest management. This is difficult to understand, unless you know that Mr. Wuerthner is known as a radical environmentalist, who makes his money writing books on the subject, over 30 published so far. But then, favoring wildfires, he is on record referring to a recent horrifying wildfire season, similar to 2017, as “the best fire season ever.” Go figure.

As I write this the last day of September, Congress has allowed the Children’s Health Insurance Program to expire. CHIP is a low-cost health insurance program for children ages 0-18 whose family income is too high to qualify for Medicaid and don’t receive insurance from an employer. The last reauthorization in 2005 was a bipartisan effort which had broad support in both houses of Congress. It was not controversial. It was simply a common sense approach to take care of the medical needs of our future generation of Americans.

As a practicing attorney, retired Marine Colonel, and former cop, what crime is associated with these controversial flyers? Last time I checked the Constitution, political speech was protected, even disgusting political speech. If the mayor has grounds to bring a tort action for libel in civil court he should, but use of the police to investigate political speech is unlawful and such action is given “strict scrutiny” in any court.
