He sat to play the instrument and could hear the errors of each key. He hit the tuning fork and a beautiful pitch rang out. Making adjustment after adjustment he tuned our piano. He sat down to play and made that old girl sing like she has never sung before. The tuner, having the ear to hear the correct pitch, allowed the piano to let out the sound she was created to make. And it was glorious.

Idaho is fortunate to be represented by the highly qualified and respected U.S. Sen. Jim Risch. Sen. Risch is to be commended for not reintroducing that Scotchman Peaks Wilderness bill, now that he recognizes the considerable widespread opposition. As if there were not already enough reasons to oppose it, this year’s wildfires and smoked-out summer skies should be a wake up call. Scientists agree that we are facing continuing climate change, and that warmer temperatures, with more bugs and disease, will cause more trees to die. This will lead to more catastrophic wildfires.

Ordinary citizens can save the American spirit
There is a spirit in America which has run through the veins of this country for 240-plus years. It was the glue that bound our Founding Fathers together during the difficult days of devising the greatest foundational government documents ever created. It has been the stitching that kept our country together during times of peace and plenty and struggle and strife. Citizens of other countries often cannot comprehend it, yet are drawn to our country because of it. Is it the freedom? Is it the prosperity? Is it the hope? I believe it is all of these and more.

Elaine French, formerly of the Idaho Conservation League, recently extolled “collaboration” in the campaign for the Scotchman Wilderness, yet that couldn’t be farther from the truth and it’s amazing that the supporters still repeat that false claim. Being that the proposed boundaries are 3.5 miles from the city of Clark Fork, perhaps Elaine can explain how it is, that the supporters (and the U.S. Forest Service) chose to never directly speak (and listen) to the most important stakeholders, the local residents, regarding this proposal? The “collaboration” really means with mostly outside environmental interests, the former county commissioners played along with it and the supporters should flat-out be ashamed by this.
