Summer is winding down and Commissioner Dan McDonald is still a do nothing concerning wake boarders on the Pend Oreille River. Big joke. He doubled the fine. A lot of good that has done. Wake boarders have figured out how to get around any control. On a recent Saturday night as I sat in the dark looking at the heavens over the water, there were three wake boarders out in the pitch black with their rear spot lights on, wake boarding until almost 10:30 at night in Willow Bay. True, it is illegal, but who is going to do anything about it? There is only one solution to the wake board problem on the river. It needs to be declared illegal to wake board at any time on the river, but OK on the main lake. Wake board boats should not allowed to perform in the wake board mode at any time.

For some Christians, every three years the month of August becomes “Bread” Month. Congregations like First Lutheran Church lean on a three-year cycle through the Gospels called the lectionary. Since Mark is the shortest Gospel, John shows up the most this year — Year B. And, in August we take the whole month to walk through John 6, where Jesus feeds the 5,000 and teaches about how he is the bread of life.

We are on the verge of loosing the most important, and non-partisan, communication tool at our disposal. Last year the Federal Communications Commission started dismantling “net neutrality” regulations designed to protect equal access to the internet. Without net neutrality, internet service providers (ISPs, such as Verizon, AT&T, Time Warner) are able to block content and slow internet speeds at their will. ISPs could block an individual’s blog in favor of an advertisement, or slow the speed of the small business website in favor of the bigger competitors.

Library offers book donation tips, tricks and how-tos
Once upon a time, there was a box of books tucked away in an attic. It sat in the dark for years waiting to be discovered by someone who would appreciate the books inside. One day, the attic light came on and the box felt a warm embrace as it was lifted up. The box was opened for the first time in ages as some CDs and DVDs were stuffed inside. The freshness of the outdoor air surrounded the box as it was gently placed in a car. The natural light from the many windows and subtle vibration of the moving vehicle built anticipation until suddenly the movement stopped. The warm sun rushed over the box as the hatchback was opened. After some brief conversation between the driver and the librarian, the box was hoisted out of the car and taken to its new home. The books were sorted and shared with the Friends of the Library or added to the library collection where they lived happily ever after.

Ever since I read Keith Kinnaird’s article about building a second railway bridge across Lake Pend Oreille, I’ve been reading the comments that have been submitted by concerned parties, and I am thinking that everyone involved are ignoring the most important risk aspect of the project: the integrity and remaining operating life of the existing railway bridge in light of the increased railway traffic envisaged by BNSF once the second bridge is put into operation. The existing railway bridge is over 110 years old, and should probably be demolished and replaced with a new bridge itself which will ensure an operating life equivalent to the new bridge design.

Sprinting for your overall health and fitness
In the early days of my youth, I wasn’t very athletic. One day, I was trying out for football and the coach made a comment to another coach “that kid was pretty fast in sprint drills”, of course the comment was directed towards me. That stuck with me and the following year I tried out for the track team and became one of the fastest sprinters in my area at the time. Sprinting was my thing and it became very useful as a physical conditioning tool and out running my bigger brother, who at the time was a city police officer. Long story on that last part, suffice to say he never did catch me.
