In response to Courtney Wallace’s treatise on the safety procedures for BNSF railroad (Daily Bee, Dec. 20), I don’t think anyone disagrees with the effort currently being made. In light of the fact that BNSF experienced four derailments in the Pacific Northwest within as many years, it is encouraging to hear they are finally being proactive. Also, most people agree it is nice to have more semis off the road and have freight hauled by train.

A word of advice to climate change contrarians: Check the accuracy of your source material before touting it as evidence against human-caused global warming. In a recent letter (Daily Bee, Dec. 18), Jeremy Conlin plays up a chart that purports to show a poor correlation between atmospheric carbon dioxide levels and temperature changes throughout geological history. He appears to be naïvely unaware that his graphical evidence has been critically evaluated and found to be seriously lacking in scientific rigor. Its relevance is summarized as follows: “… your alleged “evidence” is a graph, in part hand-drawn, posted to a website that hasn’t been updated in six years by an obscure person with no discernible expertise in this area, and based on the work of a scientist who is not an expert in paleo temperature reconstructions and whose ideas were long ago supplanted by better work based on actual physical proxy records.“ (See “Here’s what real science says about the role of CO2 as Earth’s preeminent climatic thermostat” at http://bit.ly/2ENB9MV .)

Water infrastructure plays huge role in Idaho
As we spend time with family and friends this Christmas season — tromping through the snow to get a Christmas tree, skiing, snow shoeing, sledding, ice skating, or just shoveling snow and ice off of our driveways and sidewalks — the snow we recreate in and move around translates into significant water resources and development for our state. Federal policy must enable the local decisions that best determine the management of these critical resources.

In her letter “Sandpoint doesn’t need to be a ‘smart city’” on December 16, Anne Chamberlain expressed concerns about so-called 5G technology, which is likely coming soon to a street corner near you. Unfortunately, with the apparent “need for speed,” this technology is moving forward with very limited (though concerning) research on human health effects. While the move from 3G to 4G involved faster speeds with the same technology (low frequency radio waves below 6GHzs), 5G is a whole different animal (high frequency radio waves 30-300 GHzs). While it’s being promoted as simply much faster (and myriad tech and utility companies have invested billions in its implementation), the much higher microwave frequencies generate huge concerns for human beings (and other living things). It’s extremely important that the city of Sandpoint (and its residents) understand and review 5G technology before jumping on the “faster is better” bandwagon.

As a refugee from the Golden State, I understand the importance of structure, both physical and political. A visit to the Winchester Mystery House as a teen, was a formidable experience. So she ordered her workers to build continuous nonsense, stairs and hallways to nowhere, with no purpose. As a result, her once peaceful home became a haven of insanity.

Monte Heil (Daily Bee, Nov. 25, 2018) contends climate change is “mere speculation” and “only a theory.” To clarify matters, climate change (global warming) is not a theory. It is a fact supported by many thousands of empirical data points from multiple sources. (See “Climate change: How do we know?” at climate.nasa.gov/evidence). In science, a theory is an explanation for why things in nature behave the way they do. It is a well-established, but provisional, explanation that has predictive power and is based on an abundance of independently verifiable data. Theories regarding climate change that meet the aforementioned criteria aren’t guesswork. They provide valuable insight into the processes involved.

At the end of his letter (Daily Bee, Nov. 22, 2018), Cort Gifford offers sage advice — “Educate yourself.” The most effective way to do that is to thoroughly examine all the pertinent evidence and derive conclusions that are best supported by factual information. Most of us have neither the time, inclination, resources, nor training to rigorously evaluate the complex scientific database associated with global warming. Instead, as in the case of other complicated scientific matters, we do the next best thing. We rely on the consensus of those who have the most expertise and best understanding of the subject. In the case of global warming, that would be the practicing climate scientists, 90-plus percent of whom agree that the current outcome is largely the result of the human consumption of fossil fuels.
