I’d appreciate an explanation on the foregoing, because quite frankly, it doesn’t make sense to me.

When it comes to technology, balance is best
When I was employed as a sales person, I was presenting a pitch to an important client when a video game theme song interrupted our conversation. I tried to ignore it, but it was really disruptive. I don’t play video games and don’t have any on my phone, so I was waiting for him to turn off the noise. I finally pulled out my phone to check it, as more of a gesture than anything. It turns out, my grandchild, who was 5 years old at the time, had downloaded a video game on my phone unbeknownst to me and my pocket had inadvertently engaged it.

A few weeks ago, I posted a light-hearted comment on a local web discussion parodying how people blindly follow a cause with few actual facts. Instead, they rely solely on uninformed emotion. My ability to comment apparently was restricted immediately. Just for funnsies, I publicly reposted the comment on Facebook to display the absurdity of the restriction. I included Googled pictures of Homer Simpson drooling over “Kosher pork chops” and a cute baby pig. My point was made beyond my wildest expectations. I even exposed misplaced and hysterical political correctness run amuck. Someone complained and Facebook blocked my account within two days. It is still blocked weeks later. Here is the Facebook posting for you to judge on its offensiveness:

The supply chain connecting the region is a positive story, whereby farming yields in Idaho are equally important as consumer products from abroad.

With the warm spring weather it is turtle crossing time again. I started watching for them on the road by Pack River on Highway 200 on my way back and forth to town. I saw one at the side of the road a couple of days ago. He looked intact so I turned around and came back to assist him away from the road. To my total dismay when I picked him up I saw he was alive but had sustained an injury to his head.

BCRW announces Tuesday meeting
PONDERAY — The Bonner County Republican Women, Inc., will meet on Tuesday, May 15, at the Ponderay Events Center, 401 Bonner Mall Way, for their monthly meeting.

Scott Herndon
1: I have been inspired by work experiences of government overspending and inefficiency versus private industry, and I have encountered many instances where state government has strayed from the law of the state and federal constitutions and statutes. I am also inspired by legislators who want to strengthen state sovereignty.

Heather Scott
1. I came to north Idaho because of the rural self-reliant life style it offers and became aware that government was beginning to encroach into every aspect of my life. I don’t believe in asking others to do something for me or that I would not do myself. Instead of sitting on the side lines and complaining, I got involved and have been working to make a difference ever since. It is not always easy or comfortable but rewarding to help educate citizens on how to get involved to control our government.
Wilderness designation would restrict uses
There are many reasons to oppose the proposed Scotchman Peaks wilderness, including the poor process leading to the proposal, forest and wildlife management issues, restrictions of previous uses and increased federal regulations. The Forest Service in their 13 year Forest Plan process, which led to the wilderness recommendation, never held a single local hearing in the closest communities, which they are required by law to do. The Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness in more than a decade of campaigning for this wilderness, never held a single public meeting in the local areas to find out what residents would or would not support, until the residents of Clark Fork, which is only 3.5 miles from the proposed wilderness, requested a meeting in January of 2017. The majority of residents who spoke at that meeting were overwhelmingly opposed to the wilderness. The previous Bonner County commissioners, our closest elected representatives, endorsed this wilderness and even described wide-spread support for the wilderness, yet never asked local city councils or residents what they thought about the wilderness. After being left out of the process, the Clark Fork City Council voted unanimously to reject the wilderness last year.

A hundred years ago, when our ancestors wanted to enter the forests to hunt, fish, camp, pick berries they had only two choices: on foot or on horseback. Nowadays numerous mechanical devices make entering most of the forests a snap: with four-wheelers, snowmobiles, dirt bikes one can access almost all of our national forests in no time at all. Nonetheless, some of us old folks still prize the old methods of access and want those to remain for our children and grandchildren. In our current hurried and harried lives, it is a treat to be able to hike or ride at a leisurely pace up a quiet trail. As a person with a pro-life perspective on the issue, I find the use of such tactics callous, unpalatable and counter-productive to any kind of honest heartfelt discussion. Anybody who would use these tactics (Scott Herndon) is more concerned about their own perspective than how to help others. Anybody who would describe Mr. Herndon as a “strong leader” in spite his displayed poor judgment in using these tactics is either lacking an understanding of people, personal integrity or both.

Idaho currently lags behind all our surrounding states and most of the country in public resources dedicated to K-12 and university education. Advocates for the permanent federal land seizure have been hard at work for many years gradually closing numerous trails in the Scotchman Peak/Lightning Creek area. They want the un-suspecting public to agree that nothing is going to change, because they have already instituted major change towards fulfilling a “wilderness designation.” Some would say with limited recognition by many living in adjacent areas. Trickling trail closures slowly over time has created a default wilderness condition that advocates now want to make permanent. A classic liberal process, effecting their will over the rights of use by others.

After speaking to and reading about the candidates for Bonner County assessor, Engelhardt is the clear choice, he is thoughtful, listens, and understands our frustrations with the assessor’s office. He understands the role of the assessor is that of an administrator as opposed to an appraiser.

I read the letter from one Emma Carter with great humor. Seems she is upset because a letter writer suggested that people change their affiliation so they can vote for a Republican of lesser conservative. That is interesting in itself but nevertheless, over the years, those who vote across party are so slim. Then the Republican party decided they were going to run their own show along with us and barred all the rest of us from voting for their persons. For every Democrat that switched, there were at least 25 or more of those who can’t stand either party … who now cannot vote, unless we hold our noses and say we are a Republican for the day. The county calls me an unaffiliated voter; I call myself a Cafeteria Party voter … walking through, picking the person and not the party.

The ballot for the upcoming May 15 primary election will include an Scotchman Peaks Wilderness “advisory” question, as follows: “Do you favor Senator Jim Risch’s proposal for congressional designation of a 13,960-acre Scotchman Peaks Wilderness Area in Bonner County.” Although non-binding, the results potentially have a significant impact on the chances for legislation. Bonner County voters now have a very important opportunity to demonstrate the strong and diverse support the Scotchmans have earned over the decades. Regardless of political affiliation, all residents of Bonner County can, and should, vote on this measure.

May 15 could be our last chance to save the Scotchman Peaks area from being permanently locked up into federally restricted wilderness. This would preclude future generations from having any say in the management as conditions change. This wilderness movement is being led by and funded by some out-of-state and late arrival misguided environmentalists. They selfishly want to make this their private playground, effectively locking out the rest of us.

Boredom is not a reason to run for office. And neither is gender. But a willingness to serve your fellow citizens, dedication to the demands of the position, and a commitment to excellence and honesty are. Also required is an unyielding understanding that “the best government is that which governs least.” In his first term in office, Dan McDonald has displayed all of these characteristics, and then some.

I am voting for Dan McDonald for commissioner and you should, too. I first met Dan just before he was elected and he told me that, while he normally would not support wilderness, he did support the proposed Scotchman wilderness, because he had heard that most of the county supported it. After I explained to him that the Forest Service, the supporters and the current (at the time) commissioners, had never met with residents in the county to talk directly about the wilderness, so they could not honestly make those claims, he raised concerns. After explaining that many other users, including snowmobilers have been recreating in this area for a long time and that the area was in serious need of forest and wildlife habitat management, he immediately checked with others and decided that a wilderness was clearly not in the best interest of this county.

It appears Montana is ahead of Idaho, in recognizing that we need to start managing our forests, before we lose all of them to fire! U.S. Senator Steve Daines and U.S. Congressman Greg Gianforte, both of Montana, are working to bring back forest management on our national forests, with a bill that passed the U.S. House of Representatives and is now being reviewed by the U.S. Senate. The bill cuts red tape, reduces predatory litigation, accelerates common sense fire reduction projects, modernizes how we pay for catastrophic wildfires and forces the Forest Service keep its promise to manage our public land.

My family and friends started hunting in the Scotchman area in 1969. Over the years, we brought out many elk and deer from Blue Creek, Regal Creek, Morris Creek, East Fork and Savage Creek. To do this, we cut out the trail every year with chainsaws, something that is no longer permitted. As I get older, using a game cart would be helpful, but I cannot use those either. My sons and friends have taken snowbikes to the top of Scotchman Peak and snowmobiles into upper East Fork; both of these activities are now illegal also.
