How to make Sandpoint a trails destination
Last month I was discussing the incredible amenities and opportunities provided by trails and connectivity. I shared how far the region has come in the last 20 years to establish itself as a trails community. Trails create equitable access and improve public health and quality of life by giving people reasons and opportunity to go outside and play. In turn this stimulates the economy and makes Sandpoint an even more desirable place to live, work, start a business and raise a family.

FSPW hosts Opt Outside Friday hike
Four years ago, one of the largest outdoor retailers in the US did something unthinkable. They not only closed on the biggest sales day of the year — Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving — but they paid their employees to not come to work. It seems somewhat counterintuitive for a retailer to eschew the spending splurge that follows the turkey and gravy binge of late November, but it surely got people’s attention. Recreational Equipment, Incorporated — also known as REI — began Opt Outside Friday. Since then, the Opt Outside movement has grown in size and scope to become a major outreach program for REI.

Keep hope alive for the mountain caribou
On an unusually cold and rainy July day 18 years ago, a friend of mine and I took a hike to Beehive Lake in Idaho’s Selkirk Mountains. We almost bagged our plans due to the foul weather. Perhaps it was fate that convinced us otherwise because that hike was a transformative experience. That was the day that I saw an animal that I had never seen before. Standing near the shore of the lake was a four-legged ungulate. As I ran through the list of deer, elk, and moose in my mind, I realized that this member of the deer family was not one of the usual suspects. There could be only one possible answer. We had stumbled upon a caribou.

Choosing a college can be one of the biggest decisions for a high school senior. As if that decision didn’t carry enough weight, choosing to pursue collegiate athletics brings a myriad of challenges. Only one percent of all high school athletes compete at the next level, and as of Monday afternoon, two more Bulldogs can claim membership in this elite group.

We can never forget Idaho's first responders
Idaho’s first responders experience unthinkable horrors on a routine basis. Whether it’s witnessing victims of domestic violence, pulling a body from a fire or accompanying a car-accident victim in an ambulance to the hospital. Much of what they see and hear does not make the news or social media. Even when it does, the public does not see or feel what our first responders go through each day. A news story comes and goes in a minute or so before it is lost forever. For Idaho’s best and bravest, the images never go away.

I am very concerned about the proposed human rights club scheduled over lunch at Priest River Lamanna High School, apparently without parental or community input. With an outlined focus of “American Indian, Alaska Native ..” in November, “Men & LGBTQA” in December, “Middle Eastern” in January, “Black and African American” in February, Women in March, Asians in April, and “European (Irish, Polish, etc.)” in May, it seems clearly to have a political and social agenda with which the parents in our community may not agree. Yet, I’ve been told, because the “club” advisor has chosen to have the meetings during the day, neither parents, community members, nor even school board trustees are allowed to attend.

Holding Idaho accountable for suicide spending
As a first-term senator, there were a lot of things I needed to learn. One of them was the problem with the suicide rate in Idaho, and, more specifically, in our legislative District 7. Idaho is the fourth leading state in per capita suicides, and District 7 has the highest suicide rate in Idaho. It quickly became apparent to this first-term senator that this issue needed to be at the top of my list.
