Apparently, First Amendment only applies to Trump haters

My bad, I plumb forgot the First Amendment applies only to Trump haters.

Such a little word — “see” — yet so full of meaning. Take just the physical act of seeing. Eyes are second only to the brain in their complexity, composed of over two million working parts. Technically, we see with our brain and the eye acts like a camera taking in light and sending information for the brain to process — as much as 36,000 pieces of info in an hour. Over half our brain function concentrates on sight.

Build the smelter in Canada, not in our backyard
I have lived in Sandpoint for almost 20 years. I grew up and moved here from a small town north of Tucson, Ariz. I breathed the smelter smoke from San Manuel’s Magma Copper Co. for many years. The plants and animals for 100 miles surrounding the plant were distressed and dying. They would slow the output during the day and crank it up to full capacity at night. It was insane, they tore the stacks down a few years ago, but the devastation is still evident and it will be decades before the region cleans up and any sort of normality returns to the fragile ecosystem.

Remembering, That's one small step
For the 34,000 Scouts attending the National Jamboree at Farragut State Park, Sunday, July 20, 1969, dawned sunny and warm. Religious services that morning reminded the Scouts of the 12th part of the Scout Law, “A Scout is Reverent.” I attended the Protestant service along with an estimated 10,000 Scouts, leaders and one very special guest. Moments before beginning, several Mercury sedans arrived while adult Scouters assisted an elderly woman wearing a blue khaki dress. Without any instructions ahead of time, without a single word being said, 10,000 of us immediately stood at attention until Lady Baden-Powell took her front row seat. I remember little else except that I attended “church” with the widow of Sir Robert Baden-Powell, the English war hero who founded the Scouting movement in England.

What is it about “global” that deniers of global warming do not understand? One of their misleading claims is that “it was warmer 2,000 and 1,000 years ago than it is now.” While certain areas of the Northern Hemisphere appear to have been relatively warm then, surface temperatures are now warmer on a worldwide basis than they were during that period. (See: “Does the medieval warming period discredit climate change?”) Just because some parts of the Earth were unusually warm then does not negate the fact that it is demonstrably warmer on a global scale now.

What will it take for fair gas prices in town?
As of Tuesday, June 25, the price of a gallon of gas In Coeur d’Alene is $2.55, Spokane is $2.64, Bonners Ferry $2.77, and Sandpoint is still over $3 a gallon, according to gasbuddyidaho.com. In April and May of this year, I had to travel to Spokane daily for nine weeks for medical treatments, and became painfully aware of the noticeable price differential. In early May, I watched the price of gas in Post Falls drop below $3 a gallon, while in Sandpoint, it increased to $3.18. Throughout May, gas steadily decreased in Coeur d’Alene, Post Falls and even in Spokane, while remaining high in Sandpoint. Needless to say, during those weeks of commuting, I made it a point to always fill up in Coeur d’Alene or Post Falls.
Improving vets' access to mental health care
When we think of what it means to be healthy, we often think of physical health--maintaining an optimal weight, eating well and not having any ailments slowing us down. However, the definition of “healthy” includes not just physical but also mental and emotional wellbeing. Distressing statistics show we cannot afford to overlook the importance of balancing all of these essential parts of healthy living. I recently co-led the introduction of S. 1594, the Show Esteem and Respect for Veterans by Increasing Care and Equity Act to address the alarmingly high veteran suicide rates by allowing veterans open access to mental health care at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. While veterans are not the only Americans experiencing high suicide rates, veteran suicide rates in western states, including Idaho, remain dramatically higher than the general population. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports, “Suicide rates have been rising in nearly every state.” According to the CDC, Idaho ranks fifth-highest in the nation for suicide rates. This is more than 50 percent higher than the national average (14 percent). And, the rate of veteran suicides is approximately two times higher than general Idaho population suicides and 150 percent higher than the national veteran suicide rate.
