PRIEST RIVER — There is finally some positive local high school sports news to report during this coronavirus pandemic — Priest River senior Maddy Rusho has signed her National Letter of Intent to play golf at North Idaho College this fall.

Rusho made her commitment to the Cardinals official toward the end of the basketball season and couldn’t be happier to have a chance to continuing play the sport she loves.

“NIC was the college I wanted to go to,” she said.

Several others schools reached out to Rusho but she picked NIC over the rest for three reasons: 1. It was affordable, 2. It was close to home and 3. It had an associates degree that would transfer to the University of Idaho and allow her to get a bachelor’s in fishery resources.

Rusho first picked up a golf club when she was 5 years old. She gained a passion for the sport from her father who worked at a golf course when she was younger.

Rusho really got into golf when she joined the high school team as a freshman. Her favorite part about the sport is it allows her to enjoy the outdoors.

Rusho is one of the thousands of high school seniors around the country who had their final season canceled due to COVID-19.

Rusho is disappointed she won’t get a chance to compete for the Spartans this spring, but realizes it was out of her control.

“I was upset but there’s nothing anybody could really do so you have to be understanding about it,” she said.

Luckily, Rusho got a job at the Highlands Golf Course in Post Falls about two weeks ago so she gets to practice on the range and play the course whenever she wants. The job is helping keep her busy during these uncertain times.
