Pair of Sandpoint residents head to national cornhole tournament in Florida

SANDPOINT — Sandpoint residents Ryan Huffey and James Mize will be competing in the first national tournament of the American Cornhole League (ACL) 2019-20 season this Friday through Sunday in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

This is Huffey and Mize’s first season playing as ACL professionals. At the event, they will compete in doubles together and singles separately.

The duo participated in a number of tournaments throughout the 2018-19 ACL season to earn enough points to become ACL pros this season. This is their first time competing in a ACL national event.

Huffey and Mize will be squaring off with over 200 of the best cornhole players in the nation with over $40,000 on the line at the event.

Select competitions from the tournament can be seen live on ESPN 3 Friday at 7-8:30 p.m. and ESPN 2/3 Saturday at 5-7 p.m.

Sandpoint Idaho Cornhole January Jam Results

Sandpoint Idaho Cornhole (SIC) held its January Jam ACL Regional Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 18 at the Bonner County Fairgrounds.

Over 40 players from Idaho and Washington took part in the event. The tournament had four divisions; advanced doubles and singles and competitive singles and doubles.

Huffey claimed first in the advanced singles while fellow SIC members Eric Weisz (third), Nick Utt (tied for fifth), Greg Stapleton (tied for seventh), Cooper Balke (tied for seventh), Mark Schmeizer (tied for ninth), James Mize (tied for ninth), Owen Rust (tied for ninth), Mack Deibel (tied for 13th) and John Mace (tied for 13th) also competed in the division.

In advanced doubles, Balke and Weisz took third, Rust and Stapleton tied for fifth, Deibel and Utt tied for fifth and Huffey and Mize tied for fifth.

Ernie Bauer and John Mace captured first in competitive doubles. Other local results in the division include Dan Lister and Mark Schmelzer (tied for fourth), Jessie Huffey and Jared Presnell (tied for fifth), Bob Racer and Jeanne Racer (tied for fifth), Tim Custer and Steve Sprague (tied for seventh), Frankie Good and Steve Kamp (tied for seventh), Phil Hanks and Shem Hanks (tied for ninth), Josh Kellogg and Ely Verzier (tied for ninth).

Ryan Clark secured third in competitive singles, and Kamp and Jessie Huffey tied for seventh.
