Velma Faye Wescott, 85

Velma Faye Wescott, 85, passed away in the evening of Tuesday, June 30, 2020, with her sons at her side.

A compassionate and gentle soul, Velma was known for her quiet smile and unselfish concern for others. She was always available to listen, tell a story, or orchestrate a game. As a mother, grandmother, and aunt; Velma provided unconditional love and her commitment to family was paramount to all things in life.

The youngest of three sisters, Velma was born in Sandpoint, Idaho, on April 5, 1935, to Clifford ‘Tip’ and Irma Warren. Velma would often reflect fondly of her childhood, her friends, and the family huckleberry outings. She attended school in Sandpoint and graduated from Sandpoint High School, class of 1953, where she was a member of the SHS precision twirling team with their infamous fire batons. She continued her studies and twirling at the University of Idaho, earning her teaching credentials and graduating in 1957 with a bachelor of science in education.

Velma married Gary Wescott on September 15, 1956, in Sandpoint and after graduating from Idaho they set off on an adventurous life in the Air Force. Velma had their first child, Steve, in 1958; followed by their second, Jeff, in 1961. They raised the two boys as they moved about the country enjoying innumerable camping, skiing, and family adventures throughout Florida, Alaska, Texas, Utah, Wyoming and Idaho. Her zest and excitement for new places and experiences allowed her to quickly make lifelong friends in each new community they were stationed.

After Gary retired from the Air Force, the family moved back to the Sandpoint area and Velma resumed her teaching career full time. She was a dedicated educator and enjoyed the classroom and mentoring her many students at Sagle Elementary School, many who still greet her as “Ms. Wescott.” Her altruistic devotion to her students led her to spending many evenings focusing on those that could benefit from additional attention and encouragement. Velma was an active member in Alpha Delta Kappa sorority for women educators.

After retiring from teaching Velma and Gary took many trips spending their summers golfing and boating and their winters skiing. They were member of the Schweitzer Prime Timers where they met many close friends. She enjoyed her fellowship with her Wednesday bible study group. Her garden and home was always a source of pride of which she shared openly with all. She will be missed everyday by those she touched.

Velma is survived by sons Steven Wescott of Seattle, Washington, and Jeffrey (Tina) Wescott of Hastings, Michigan; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Gary, two sisters Dorothy Farmin and Lois Gunter, and daughter-in-law Tamara Wescott.

The family thanks the dedicated staff of Bonner General Health for their support and care. A combined celebration of life for Velma and husband Gary will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 12, 2020, at the Heartwood Center, 615 Oak St., Sandpoint, with Pastor Paul Graves officiating.
