Melvin Timothy Speelmon

| July 18, 2020 1:00 AM

Melvin Timothy Speelmon was born on June 2, 1973 in Sandpoint, Idaho, to Patti and Lewis Speelmon the day after his dad signed his first teaching contract. He passed away on July 5, 2020 at his home in Clark Fork, Idaho.

Melvin attended Hope Elementary and Clark Fork Junior Senior High School where he participated in all sports … football, basketball and track … so many great memories following these events. Melvin set many school records in track and came home with many medals from the State Track Meet each year. He also attended North Idaho College and played basketball and ran cross country track there. He was a member of the Idaho National Guard for nine years. He worked for the Diamond T Ranch while in junior high, Ruen Drilling while in high school, summers and in the last years. He also worked for Shopko while attending college, Yoke’s and Frito-Lay. At the time of his death he worked for Oliver Tree Service and loved not only his job, but the guys he worked with.

Melvin married Carolyn Hays in June 1994. They were married for 22 years and had daughters Jordan and Zoe. Even after they divorced they remained friends attending the girl’s functions and family gatherings together.

Melvin spent many years coaching his daughters in soccer. He also coached volleyball and basketball at CFHS as well as being an assistant coach at Sandpoint High School while Jordan played basketball there.

Melvin was a great dad. He attended close to all of our games and helped coach as well. He was always a part of our extracurricular activities, always encouraging us to push ourselves and to be better than he was. You could find him playing basketball with us or cheering for his favorite teams, the Celtics or Raiders. His proudest moments were when we were born. We are his pride and joy. He was an exceptional father. You’d often hear him boasting about how proud he always was of us. Melvin loved fishing with his dad and Uncle Doug. Some of his fondest memories were on his uncle’s little red boat. If he could’ve gotten paid for fishing with them every day, you bet he would’ve done it. Melvin believed in helping others and you could count on him to be there for whoever it might be and whenever. Love you, Dad, Zoe and Jordan.

He never met stranger and he made friends no matter where he went. He was friends with so many people throughout the area. He will be missed by many.

Melvin is survived by his parents; sister Wendi Treadwell (Terry, Tinese (Myla and Jace), and Tashawn); his ex-wife Carolyn Hays; daughters Jordan (Jason) and Zoe (Nic); his favorite Uncle Doug; his brothers by another Don, Ron and Randy Heller; many aunts, uncles, cousins; and many, many friends.

Fly high and free brother, always, Wendi.

Melvin’s celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2020, at the Clark Fork Senior Center at 11 a.m. with a potluck lunch to follow. In honor of Melvin’s love of sports, please wear your favorite team’s colors.
