A Post Falls Police officer was transported to Kootenai Health Tuesday evening after being shot while serving a warrant in Post Falls, police said.

The officer was shot Tuesday evening around 8:45 p.m. near First Avenue and Bentley Place in downtown Post Falls, Chief of Police Pat Knight said.

The officer was serving a warrant and called for backup when the shooting occurred.

Cover units arrived and found the officer down. He was transported to the fire department, which transported the officer to Kootenai Health.

“They found him, they scooped him up and took him to the fire department,” Knight said.

The officer's name and condition were not released.

Knight said the officer was undergoing surgery around 10 p.m.

He said a county-wide SWAT unit arrived at the scene, blocked off the area and attempted to find and arrest the suspect.

By 10:30 p.m. the suspect was still at large. — Ralph Bartholdt
