A memorial service will be held on Friday, Sept. 4, 2020, at 2:30 p.m. at Coffelt’s Funeral Chapel in Sandpoint.

Chic, as his siblings called him, was born on June 23, 1935, in Sterling, Colo., to Inez (Clark) Bloom and Edwin Bloom. The family moved to Kootenai, Idaho, in 1942, where Dick grew up helping on the family homestead.

Graduating Sandpoint High School in 1954, he joined the United States Army. He then returned to Idaho and went on to obtain his master’s degree in education administration from the University of Idaho.

Mr. Bloom, as many of his students still refer to him, had a significant and lasting influence in many lives during his career as teacher, coach, principal, and administrator of several local schools as well as in Hamilton, Mont.

Upon his retirement from education in 1985, Dick moved back to North Idaho and purchased Payless Gas and Mini Mart in Kootenai, which he ran for 10 years. After selling the station, Dick enjoyed reading, fishing, woodworking, gardening, spending time with family, and many winter trips to Mexico with his wife and close friends.

Dick is survived by his wife, Maridean; daughters Shelley Lang, Jodi (Clint) Brewington, and Kirsten (Shawn) Shreffler; son Nathan Bloom; as well as Maridean’s children, Kathy, Tricia, Cyndee, Melissa, Jay and Tom; 17 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Sandra and Tami; a brother, Terry; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his siblings, Edwin, Ann, Ralph, Colin, and Janice.
