100 Years Ago — 1920

Construction forging ahead

Steady progress has been made during the past week on the construction of two business buildings. The addition to the Charbonneau Hotel has now reached the top of the third story and is ready for a roof, while the new garage on Main Street has been practically completed with the exception of finishing work both inside and outside.

90 Years Ago — 1930

Death by tetanus

Paul Getzlaff received the injury which led to his death while fishing, He was carrying a glass jar containing bait in his hip pocket. In a fall a gash three inches deep was cut in his thigh. He had been in the hospital about a week when lockjaw developed.

80 Years Ago — 1940

Not the usual logging accident

Charles Stewart received a bad cut on his leg while hauling logs into the Wilkie Tie Mill. He got his leg caught between a large log and the running board of his truck.

70 Years Ago — 1950

Runck’s to furnish new buses

Runck’s Garage was the low bidder on a 16-passenger school bus to be delivered to Bonner County School District No. 82. The garage is furnishing the two new buses for the Priest River schools as well.

Lounge opens in hotel

Hotel Lorraine (Charbonneau) announces opening of its new cocktail lounge, the Bo-Lo Room.

60 Years Ago — 1960

Record turnout for football

A record-breaking 61 candidates to play football have drawn uniforms. Twenty-one are returning linemen and there is one letterman transfer, Gary Douglas, who played at Chewelah last year. One letterman, Tom Hendrikson, suffered a broken collarbone performing calisthenics and will be lost to the team for an indefinite time. The lettermen are headed by Carl Chapin, Bruce Harold, Don Naccarato and Darrell Wear. The remaining 17 letterman earned their first letter last year.

50 Years Ago — 1970

Increased enrollment, new teachers

Although high school registration is not completed, unofficial figures released by Principal Leonard Parenteau show an increase in enrollment of about 10 students over last year. Registration shows total high school enrollment at 294. Two new teachers have joined the faculty: Janice Purdy, home economics, and Richard Smith, commercial and coach.

40 Years Ago — 1980

Blaze contained at Elkins

A fire of undetermined origin early Labor Day at Elkins’ Tumlahee Resort destroyed an employee dormitory and the upstairs residence of Mr. And Mrs. Ike Elkins. There were no injuries in the blaze, discovered by Ike Elkins about 4:30 a.m. He said quick work by area residents saved the lodge. Employees were no longer occupying the dormitory, since the busy tourist season had ended.

Priest River’s royalty, Casey Kearbey and Lori Stewart, captured their sixth first-place award of the year during a Labor Day celebration parade n Northport, Wash.

30 Years Ago — 1990

Time capsule found

On April 24, 1953, children at Idaho Hill Elementary School buried a time capsule containing all of their names hoping someday the bottle would be found. Thirty-seven years later, after the children had long-forgotten about the small olive bottle buried under one of the school’s trees, construction workers found it while removing an old stump. The bottle contained four brown and torn pieces of paper with the names of all 111 children on them and teachers’ personal signatures.

20 Years Ago — 2000

Three trees make a fire

A mid-afternoon lightning storm sparked a forest fire on Kalispell Island Thursday. By 5 p.m. when fire crews had arrived, only three trees were involved, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
