PRIEST RIVER — The good news — Priest River football scored its first points of the season during Saturday's game against St. Maries when junior Kameron Salesky returned a fumble 42 yards for a touchdown.

The bad news — the Spartans turned the ball over eight times allowing the Lumberjacks to cruise to a 52-6 victory.

"St. Maries was a good team, but we made them look better," head coach Jared Hughes wrote in an email. "It's hard to be competitive when you give the ball to the other team that many times. We also committed six penalties which is twice what we averaged in the first two games."

St. Maries took a 30-0 lead after the first quarter. The Spartans possessed the ball four times in the opening quarter, but only managed to run seven plays. Hughes said his offense struggled to find a rhythm.

The defense settled in after a rough opening quarter, allowing just 22 points in the final three quarters. The defense forced two turnovers in the game.

Salesky had 11 tackles including three for loss to go along with his touchdown. Junior Jordan Nortz also notched 11 tackles and senior Coby Rogers and sophomore Matyus McLain tallied nine and seven respectively.

Priest River (0-3) had 31 total yards on offense.

"We'll continue to coach them up and we'll have a better outing [this] week," Hughes wrote.

The Spartans will hit the road for the first time this season when they play Orofino at 5 p.m. Friday.
