PRIEST RIVER — In its home opener on Tuesday, Priest River baseball couldn't keep up with the St. Maries Lumberjacks and fell 14-3.

The Spartans were plagued by 10 errors. Without those mistakes, head coach Mark Schultz said his team would have been in the game.

"Unfortunately again, we had the error bug," he said. "... Defensively, we just got to get better. With 10 errors it's hard to win ballgames, but the kids did showed life and fought until the very end."

Priest River trailed 7-0 after the top of the fourth inning, but their bats came alive in the bottom of the inning. Tyson Brooks and Colton Brooks each recorded an RBI single to put two runs on the board for the Spartans.

The Lumberjacks responded by scoring seven runs in the fifth. Priest River put up a run in the bottom of the inning, but couldn't muster enough offense to avoid being 10-run ruled.

"We came in and put some pressure on them," Schultz said. "Hitting wise were improving and only struck out a total of five times in the game."

Konner Johnson started on the mound for the Spartans and struck out five across 1 1/3 innings.

"At times, he looked really good," Schultz said.

Everett Hannah and Tyson Brooks came on in relief and combined for nine strikeouts.

St. Maries only outhit Priest River 6-3.

Schultz said things are looking up for the Spartans and the boys know what they need to work on moving forward.

Priest River (0-6) hosts a doubleheader with Timberlake at 3 p.m. Friday.
