SANDPOINT — Sandpoint softball was unable to avoid being swept by Lake City on Tuesday at War Memorial Field, but they showed the Timberwolves just how much they've improved over the past month.

In their season opening game at Lake City on March 13, the Bulldogs were crushed 18-0 and did not record a hit.

SHS was held to just two hits on Tuesday, but they made the Timberwolves work all day for their 13-1 victory.

"We made some great defensive plays right out of the gate, which helped us maintain momentum and be competitive throughout most of the game," head coach Elizabeth Hawkins-Williams said. "... Lake City put the ball in play a lot today, and our defense was able to keep their runners from scoring. I saw a lot of positive things today, and I am looking forward to watching our players continue to improve in our upcoming games this week."

Sandpoint stayed within striking distance after the third inning and only trailed 7-1. However, Lake City scored six runs in the top of the fifth inning to secure a 10-run rule victory.

In the second inning, senior Lily Gammon crushed a ball over the fence for her first homer of the season.

"Lily Gammon has been on an offensive tear over the past couple weeks, so I wasn’t surprised when she hit a bomb today," Hawkins-Williams said. "She has been aggressive at the plate, and it has paid off for her."

Madi Garman started on the mound for the Bulldogs and took the loss. She struck out a pair over two innings of work. Cresanna Authier, Jaden Dickinson and Via Barlow all came on in relief.

Hawkins-Williams thought Garman and Authier were both solid on the bump.

"They were able to get ahead in the count and hit spots to keep the Lake City batters from making solid contact," she said. "I was very proud of their performance."

Kinzie Ward recorded the other hit for the Bulldogs. Hawkins-Williams said Ward was outstanding at second base and made some key plays to keep the spirits of the team up.

The defeat snaps a six-game winning streak for the Bulldogs.

Sandpoint (6-4, 2-3 IEL) heads to Timberlake at 4 p.m. Thursday.
