Richard 'Bruce' Campbell, 78

Richard “Bruce” Campbell, 78, passed away on Tuesday, April 6, 2021, surrounded by his family and friends in Sandpoint, Idaho, following an extended battle with illness.

Private family services have already been held.

Bruce was preceded in death by his parents Richard and Madeline Campbell.

Bruce was born on November 21, 1942, in Burlington, Washington, to Richard and Madeline, the first of two boys. Bruce grew up in a rural farm setting in western Washington. He spent three years at Twin Cities High School in Stanwood, Washington, before moving to Friday Harbor in 1960 and graduating from Friday Harbor High School. He went on to attend the University of Washington.

Bruce joined the crew of the research ship “Hyda” and helped conduct marine research in the Puget Sound. He returned to Friday Harbor to begin a family and took a position as a cowboy for the Blazing Tree Ranch. He moved on to Seattle and began a career as a heavy duty mechanic and machinist, working for Lockheed, Todd and Duwamish shipyards. He also served as a reserve sheriff's deputy for Snohomish County.

Bruce immersed himself in a variety of activities and hobbies during his lifetime. Completing car, ship, and aircraft scale models was a constant passion. He also enjoyed model trains, astronomy, stamp collecting, and the great outdoors.

After retirement, Bruce travelled around the country before settling in Sandpoint, where he pursued projects including rebuilding tractors, maintaining the ranch and enjoying nature.

Bruce is survived by his dear friend, Donna Olazabal; his sons Scott Campbell and wife Patty, and Shane Campbell and wife Buket; daughters Cheryl Whiting and husband Lynn, and Jennifer Waddell and husband William; brother David and wife Ilene; nephew Lonnie; niece Jacquelyn; and six grandchildren, Naomi, Caleb, Madeleina, Kayla, Jacob and Brayden.
