MOSCOW — The Sandpoint golf team returned to action at the Moscow Invitational.

The girls stepped up and edged out Coeur d'Alene by one stroke to claim the team title at the tournament.

The Bulldogs had seen the Vikings twice this season prior to Wednesday's meeting at the University of Idaho Golf Course, and finished runner-up to Coeur d'Alene both times.

Given how close the girls have been to topping CDA, Wednesday's victory couldn't have been any sweeter.

"It was great," head coach Mike Deprez said. "You could see there was a lot of beaming smiles on those faces, and they like finishing first. They're aware of the fact that they've been close, but no cigar."

Outside of SHS and CDA, Lewiston, Lake City, Moscow and Post Falls also competed in the event. The Sandpoint boys captured sixth with a team score of 369.

"It was extremely windy today so it was a little on the tricky side," Deprez said.

CeCe Deprez took home medalist honors on the girls side by carding an 87. Hattie Larson shot a 92, Camille Neuder posted a 96, Annaby Kanning recorded a 106 and Lyndie Wilks had a 121.

Harley Wilks led the way for the boys with an 87. Dawson Owens tallied a 90, Connor Bird had a 92, Jake Samuels shot a 100 and Darren Bailey posted a 109. Merek Bauck competed as an individual and recorded a 93.

Deprez was really impressed with Bird's round.

"Connor kind of found a little bit of his rhythm," he said.

Moving forward, Deprez said the team needs to continue to work on minimizing mistakes on the course and staying composed when things don't go their way.

"For almost all of these players, it's how to mitigate those three holes where they cost themselves three to four strokes per hole when it should cost them one or two strokes," he said.

The Bulldogs will get plenty of time on the course this weekend when they head to the Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman, Washington, for some practice rounds.

Sandpoint will play in the Lake City Invitational on Monday at the Coeur d'Alene Public Golf Course.
