The lies that torment us

Are your thoughts tearing you down? Are you battling your thoughts? Our thoughts can keep us up at night and cause fear and anxiety. Do you think worried thoughts? Do your thoughts cause you to keep people at a distance? Do your thoughts keep you from the life you were meant to live? Are you sick and tired of the thoughts that torment you?

Our thoughts control our actions. Proverbs 23:7 says, “As he thinks in his heart, so is he.”

Ever wonder why certain behaviors never seem to go away? We need to change our thinking first. Until our thoughts are changed our behavior will remain. In Romans 7 the apostle Paul says “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate, I do.” and then later “For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me.”

The reason our thoughts torment us is because they are rooted in lies! The roots go deep and are hard at times to identify but the lie is what torments us. The devil is the father of lies. Ephesians 6:12 says “ we are not fighting flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.” Don’t panic! The truth is that there is great hope! John 10:10 says “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy, I (Jesus) have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

Make a decision today to change your thoughts. 2 Timothy 1:7 says “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” You can do this!

I am speaking as a pastor, friend, brother and as someone who has been tormented by lies myself. There is a way to overcome this. Don’t be silent. Ask for help and look up! There is a great God who loves and cares about you and wants to break the lies that torment you. You are not alone! I understand I am only touching the surface here but I do want to encourage you to make a decision to take control of your thoughts by replacing them with the Truth of God.
